Under a hazy harmattan sky on Monday, usually busy Abuja roads, notorious for busy traffic, went near-dead with barely a few cars easing through, as many owners either clogged at petrol stations, or abandoned their vehicles at home on the first full day of the commencement of government's deregulation of the oil sector.

With government subsidy off now, petrol sells at an average N141 a litre from N65, black market prices have soared and transport fares have tripled.

But the new rates, long anticipated and speculated by Nigerians, arrived still a surprise, and a shock on new year day, catching an outraged nation off guard.
