Nigerians ready to withdraw their mandate – SNG

Protesters sitting on the road

A non-governmental organisation, the Save Nigeria Group, on Wednesday said Nigerians would withdraw their mandate from President Goodluck Jonathan if he failed to reverse his policy on fuel subsidy.

The group,  in a communiqué after its meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, said at the old price of N65 per litre, there was no subsidy on petrol.

The communiqué was signed by its officers, including the Chairman, Mr. Femi Falana; National Coordinator, Mr.  Benedict Ezeagu; and Acting Secretary,  Stanley Dien.

The SNG recalled the role it played in the swearing- in of Jonathan as President in 2010 and later as substantive President.

It stated, “The President should know that where he refuses to reverse this ugly policy of his government, the same Nigerians who protested/struggled under the umbrella of SNG to make him the president of the country will not hesitate to reclaim their mandate using the same means with the attendant consequences.”

It stated that the President should reverse the anti-people policy, and “fix moribund refineries as well as courageously tackle the issue of corruption.”

The SNG described the fuel price hike as inhumane, adding that the government’s campaigns on the policy was fraudulent.

It added that the government was bent on forcing Nigerians “to accept an evil World Bank/Western Imperialist-policy that will further heighten the hardship and anguish of the people with consternation.”

The group said its research had revealed the truth about the actual price of getting petroleum product in the Nigerian market.

According to it, one barrel of crude oil is 42 gallons or 159 litres. The SNG stated the four refineries in the country had 445,000 installed capacity.

It added,  “The actual current refineries capacity due to ageing equipment is 30 per cent (i.e. 133,500 barrels per day; 4) the 133,500 barrels is =21.2 million litres; 5).”

It further stated that the required domestic consumption was 12 millions litres, adding that the moribund refineries could   meet the local consumption.

The group said, “The actual cost of petroleum product per litre in Nigeria is N40.02 and locally refined products cannot be sold at international price.

It explained that among the other oil producing nations and the members of Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, petroleum products cost highest in Nigeria, even at N65/litre

“Petroleum products costs about N9 in Venezuela; N16 in Gaddafi’s Libya; N18 in Saudi Arabia; N31 in Kuwait; N32 in Qatar; N40 in Bahrain; N54 in UAE; and N58 in Iran per litre,” it added.

The SNG asked the Federal Government to tell Nigerians how it came about the N65/litre of petroleum product or the issue of the fuel subsidy.’

GEJ should continue to listen to the IMF and Okonjo Iweala while ignoring virtually all Nigerians in a show of sheer disregard for the tenets of democracy. In fact he should dig his heel in even more and let this escalate further . He should even become more dictatorial and continue his talk about "no going back on subsidy removal".

All I know is that once he has lost the support of Nigerians completely, there will be no "going back" for him also. The likes of the SNG and Femi Falana are not going anywhere, anytime soon.

In an electoral democracy, power derives from the people. Whether 2 days or 8 months, events may precipitate the haste with which the people totally lose confidence in elected leaders to the extent they insist those leaders must go.

I think I understand your perspective i.e Nigerians voted "overwhelmingly" for GEJ, "the boy with no shoes" (and coincidentally zero record), not too long ago. Well, our people are sentimental plus ethnically and religiously bigoted. Nothing new there. If , however, many realise they have made a mistake then I back whatever they do to rectify that mistake assuming GEJ continues his anti-people and anti-democratic stance of refusing to acknowledge the will of the majority.

if anything happens to Gej, then that's the end of nigeria. Those that believe they are the 'owners of Nigeria' should take note.

Please take your clannishess elsewhere. Do you understand democracy at all? If Nigerians unanimously ask GEJ to leave then he must. Simple as that. Don't think everyone is as fuedalistic as you are to the extent they will continue to back a President causing unbearable suffering for all Nigerians. It is enough folks voted for GEJ. They are not obligated to jump into the pits of hell with him.

It is your sort of mentality that led some Northerners (Aliero, Ruma, Muthar et al) to insist Yar Adua must continue in power when he was totally incapacitated. This same SNG came to the aid of GEJ then. In fact many of those your sort call "almajiris" (Buhari, Ribadu, Balarabe Musa, Col.Umar et al) admirably showed respect for democracy and its tenets to insist that GEJ be sworn in as acting President. Now, even if you cannot see it, you are displaying the same bigotry and ethnic clannishness you alway accuse all Nigerians , except of course your ethnic group, of possessing.

Pls who are the Nigerians you are talking about? the same bigots that lost woefully some months back or some confused youths that doesn't even know what subsidy removal is all about? Using this unpopular but necessary policy to get some cheap publicity doesn't make you a patriot. i know your type and we are not all foo.led. So, mr man, park well cos you are nothing but a pure hypocrite

@Gbawe:

Why humor such with a response? Within hours of the noise of "SS\SE not protesting" haven't we see protests that overtook even the first ones and got to CNN? Was it not just yesterday that Niger Delta ex-militants warned that they would avange any civilian deaths and that this regime is self-serving and not working for their interests? Same ex-militants went as far as saying further delay in back-tracking would unleash them on govt agents and installations, didn't they?

Abi you know any rank badge titled "warrior01" ? Leave the desktop champions to their ranting and threats - we will all see the end of this story:

Please tell your man to dig in rather than listen to reason. Luckily youtube still has videos of Ghadaffi wondering what he did to his killers as they beat the booty off him. I can just imagine that guy when the chips come down

SNG and co. una just wake up abi? grin

Anyways, To those ppl supporting the removal of fuel subsidy are nothing but traitors. I wonder how many are even aware of the fact that the monthly salary of a Federal legislator in Nigeria is more than that of US President Barack Obama. And 25% of the Nigerian annual budget is spent on salaries, benefits and other expenditures accrued by our so-called Federal Executive council. Considering this senseless misplacement of priorities plus the cantankerous corruption in the govt, why should there be adequate money to finance social development project in the country in the first place? As if this gross injustice is not enough, they are blaming the lack of funds on the only last govt subsidy (fuel) left for the poor masses.

Some educated illiterates in support of fuel subsidy removal often try to relate our situation with other developed countries, not knowing that the minimum monthly wages in many of those countries are even more than the annual salary of most Nigerians, how stupid can one be to compare "apples" with not even oranges, but with "kulikuli" .

What the sensible masses are saying is that the problem (lack of fund for social projects) is due to the rotten system of governance. Removing fuel subsidy and even increasing fuel cost 100 fold would not bring social development as long as GEJ's "chop I chop" system remains . An old wine may be put in a new bottle, but its still an old wine.

GEJ and his FEC should lead by example by first removing/cutting the incessant "chop I chop" subsidies they enjoy, before having the audacity to debate whether or not to remove fuel subsidy for the masses. Saying fuel subsidy is the reason why there's no enough money to finance social projects is treasonable and a great affront on the sensibility of Nigerian masses.
