Let’s start with the name—Easter. It sounds innocent. Light. But it doesn’t appear in the Bible. Not once. So where did it come from? Cue the Venerable Bede, an 8th-century Anglo-Saxon monk and historian. According to him, Eostre was a goddess of spring and renewal worshipped by Germanic tribes. Her festival, held in April, celebrated the rebirth of nature. Bede suggested early Christians borrowed the name for their own spring celebration of resurrection. Case closed? The Unsolved Mystery We still don’t know who Eostre really was. We still argue over how “Christian” Easter really is. And every spring, people still gather—to remember, to feast, to play, to hope. Because, in the end, it is humanity’s relentless habit of making meaning out of mystery.
