Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay,
sustains that the militia belonging to the Boko
Haram ultra- islamic sect who for months now
have been causing bloodshed in the north of
Nigeria are chargeable of crimes against
humanity. A report of the South African
Magistrate of Indian origin quotes that "If they
are found to be responsible of the extensive or
systematic attacks against civilians, among
which those perpetuated on the ground of
religious or ethnic reasons, the members of
Boko Haram could be accused of crimes against
humanity".This is also addressed to "other
groups or entities". He also warned that "Any
kind of violent act must not be left unpunished,
even those that have been perpetuated as
retaliation against previous attacks". The
massacres of the Islamic group that have
especially targeted the Christian minorities in the
north, have unleashed retaliations in the south
where Christian extremists have attacked
Muslims. There is reason to fear that the
violence might lead to an open sectarian
conflict. Pillay has pressed the Abuja
government to take a stand against the violence.
He then asked the leaders of the various
communities "not to fall into the trap of the
appeals of retaliation or of their justifications",
and to combine their efforts to "unambiguously
condemn" the attacks. He "encourages"
followers to denounce and get "those who are
involved in homicides and violent acts" arrested.
There have been dozens of deaths in the
federate States only in the last couple of days
