I worked as a photographer for a studio in Lagos. I started the job in January, and the studio was newly launched, so we weren't getting much traction. However, during the interview stage, the CEO didn't mention that there were no clients. He spoke as though there were already clients, and it was just a matter of me coming to work. It wasn't until I resumed that I found out this wasn't the case, but he assured us that we shouldn't worry, our salaries wouldn't be affected, and he was hiring a marketer. The marketer joined us in February, but nothing changed. Although we were working, most of the jobs were promotional, and only a few were paid.

Fast-forward to June, after the end of May, we were all expecting our salaries. However, the first week passed, and then the second week, so I wrote an email asking why our salaries were delayed. I also informed management that I was running out of money to cover my transportation and daily expenses, which might later stop me from working. I asked if there was a good reason for the delay, it would be kind of management to inform us. I sent the email on Monday last week.

On Friday, I informed the secretary that I didn't have any money, and I might not be able to come to work if I wasn't paid. She didn't respond. The following day, Saturday, I stayed home and didn't go to work, unaware that some staff members had also decided to stay home. That evening, I received an email stating that I had been terminated with immediate effect and that I was to return all company properties by Tuesday, which was just my ID card. I replied that I wouldn't return anything until my salary was paid. Note that I had worked for two weeks in June.

On Monday, I received my pay, but it was only for May. I went to the studio on Tuesday to return my ID card. The secretary informed me that I might be paid for June's salary by the end of the month. And that's how my unemployment journey started.
Nothing spoil, it's not like they had capacity to pay

Also, ₦20,000 was deducted from my salary. However, good people of Nairaland, I'm in need of a job. I'm a graduate of Philosophy and I have experience as a virtual assistant and can perform efficiently any task you need assistance with. I'm also experienced as a customer care representative. I'm also a trained photographer. Thank you.
There are many other options out there anyway.

Actually I'm thinking of going into animal farming, specifically rearing of goats but i don't know anything about it.
If that’s what you prefer to do, there are free YouTube videos online on this. Search Nairaland too to see if there are useful Threads on this. Read more about the is also. Time is going.

After watching those videos, look for who is doing similar thing close to your area then go for internship like 2 months.

You can start from your family house’s backyard.
Please leave Lagos for now. Studying Philosophy won’t cut anything in current Nigerian job market.

You can be buying local goats from village and be selling to butchers and restaurants on Lagos, as another hustle.

Prior to the email, did you ever send email to sow concern about low parsonage and offer any advice on what they can do better. Not justifying your sack but ...you may want to approach things differently next time
I agree with you, he should have sent the company a message about low patronage, but then, the company knew exactly what they already have.

He's lucky at least they paid him for 1 month at the end

In the Labour act, unlawful termination of employment is subject to litigation at the Industrial court.
But the road to Justice makes the fight not to worth it.
That is Nigeria for you.
One men business turned entrepreneur can hire and fire and still get away with it.
Be positive, and get another job.
Good luck

Sorry for quoting you but don't encourage him.
To the op, I know it's not easy working without pay but you already understand/know that the company is struggling to get gigs which affected their revenue and you refused to make sacrifices just for 2 months.
And you are now looking for another job, and if they have issues you will bolt also.
The economy is not easy for everyone especially entrepreneurs but employees can also make little sacrifices.
N/B: I am not supporting withholding staff wages but......
Staff left most of the time, not because of salary delays. It's because of attitude of the company. No single explanation or not an encouraging words to the employees to exercise patients till things are back in order.

Most of them just ignore and act like everything is normal. I was a victim too, no salary for good 4 months and no single word from management on why.
If I don't have skill that was making money aside salary, how do you think I'll survived for 4 months for a job that requires 3k as TF daily?

Most often we allow entitlement mentality and bias against your employer to be cloud our rationale. You k we you guys did not have clients instead of working smartly hard to improve the company where you work you chose to give querry to your employer.
It is understandable that you are entitled to your salary but you should waer a human face to it. I have seen emokayers who borrow money from their employee and later paid back. I have seen emoloyees who were owned more than two months salary by their employer. They never went to querry him until he paid the money. Whoever that owes you knows so you should not make it as you are the boss to pass querry. You can only do that when it is obvious that you are in an exploitative organisation.

I currently not working as a va for any organisation
But went into the va thing to prope up the salary of staffs I have

In thjs year

We have worked for some small sme or just internet people as I would call them.in the areas of marketing

First one was social media management which the staff did for 4 months
Another was comment marketing on live videos
Creating stories with gpt,
Wordpress site making,
Goodie ads and setup,
E-commerce product loading and a few others I can't remember

The most important skills of a va is marketing
The second ,skills, patience and capacity to take lots of nonsense from employers

I do not rule out the fact that there are programers
Or data entry personnel
Who do not really need to do marketing
But when starting alone
The first is marketing
The second is the skill itself

Government jobs that leaves you begging and borrowing at month end!

Sad!

I prefer private firms!
omooba05:
One man business job is very risky .. if you work for a private business, you are still jobless.. no job security.. you can be fired anytime.. No job like Government job even if the salary is 50k is better than private job of 300k.

I think you made a small mistake. You held the company under siege for a moment, next time don’t stay home when you haven’t reached an agreement. It’s not professional.

And just so you know people would judge you too. And would remind you of the past.

Next time simply resign

You can’t be all in and then show signs of people outside the company
Then he made another mistake of bringing it to the internet. Employers are not smiling now. Not the best time for business. Lagos is a small world we're almost everyone knows everyone.

He will be shocked how this post might come to affect his chances of getting another job. Lessons learnt the hard way sha. You are not so anonymous on the internet. We should all be careful what we put out there.

A lady came to our office as a social media manager
Got employed while I told her first week was a trial though she would be paid

Found out the second day that she wasn't really good
Because other staffs could churn out what she was burning hours on with a 5 minutes gpt prompt
Told her to work with others not knowing she was feeling she was the overall manager
Chatted me on WhatsApp of our organisation structure by wednesday ( because she can't stoop so low to work with other staffs ..like she is Thier boss
We had to let her go by Friday
Many people can talk, few are ready to do the actual thing

You were sacked because you lack experience and you were selfish your employer was paying your salary when there were few customers you did not emphatize with him also you did not have a big picture . My advice have the business mind solve challenges you will be rewarded , when there were few customers all staff should be marketers to bring businesses thru personal contact and ict and social media . I am sure if u bring business your oga will give yu commission

Growth manager
Social media manager
Head of sales
Head of growth

There are more spaces in marketing than most other roles
You will still.need an actual skill
But marketing skills top the list of people wanted online

You can add animation
Programming
Video making
Ans many other things

But we you need 300-400k to just sustain pending when you get the 3k-4k USD jobs
You will.need to know marketing and an added skill

Sorry I didn't include where the companies are located

We had
Vietnam
India
USA
Netherlands
Sweden

While they seems top tier
This people are usually not more than 25-500 USD monthly

Except for the wordpress which can go 1k USD monthly

Not always this way
As there are va for 3k USD monthly but you must know lots of stuffs to earn that much and have real online credibility from linkedin to forums as a proof beyound even your portfolio

VA jobs within Nigeria? What qualifications or experience is necessary?
The skill is the qualification
A skill you are comfortable with that you can build on and take to old age

Yea there are va jobs too, but better to have two
One Nigeria and one abroad

Now your journey to greatness begins.

Kneel down and pray to become self employed and never to be an employee again. it is a fvcking TRAP
Not everyone can be self employed. Sometimes one needs to work in a corporate environment to learn the ropes of managing a business before they breach out.

My Dear

Please I am not hear to sympathize with you but to tell you the whole truth if you must make it in employment - employer and employee relationship market.

The steps you took are not entirely correct in the first place. Do you know how many civil servants and other corporate employees whose salaries are not paid at month end and yet kept coming to work? If you are an employer and you delay salary for one week, then all your staff will demand reasons for delay and where you also delay in explaining, they will all abscond from work. How will you feel?

Humility and perseverance are compound virtue in life. You are employed to solve problems and one of the problems is to make money with which other problems are solved. How much did you make for the company while your stay lasted? You are only after your salary.

Frankly, you have just made yourself unemployable. Nobody would want to employ a character like you in his organization.

Solution

Humble yourself, go back to the company and apologize to them. Avoid exposing this flaws in the social media, the more you do the more you endanger your chances of employment. Be advised bros
