@seun, this is quite a brilliant idea. However, in an economy like ours, brilliant ideas dont seem to work. Once you increase fuel by 0.002% weekly, prices of items would go up by over 2.5% weekly. Thats where the problem lies.

@Seun,
An intellectually stimulating proposition but in arriving at this you made two fundamental errors:

1. You assumed that the price of crude hence refined products will remain fixed at the current international market price hence the price of N141/litre in three years time. We know that this is not so as the price of crude go up and down but mostly UP in the international market, so I doubt if your price of N141/litre will still be viable in 3years time.

2. The pump price of petrol in Nigeria depend on the prevailing exchange rate, with way the Naira has been loosing value against the Dollar, If in 3yrs time the Naira have depreciated to say N200:1USD. then a pump price of N141/litre will no longer be tenable, the price will have to adjust to accommodate this.

Remember diesel went up too.Its now selling at NGN165 mind you.So diesel car wont solve any problem. The best alternative is electric car.You know some electric cars car travel as far 120-140km(Lagos-Ibadan) after full charge. But the problem is,where is the electricity to charge the car.

I'd rather some of you responders, who do not believe that OP's suggestion will work, write one sentence in disagreement with the OP's suggestion, while you proffer your own well thought out solutions or proposals in several sentences and posts.

What I find most disheartening is that many Nigerians are resigned to the idea that corruption will remain with us for ever and cannot be dealt a deadly blow. o ma se o.

^^

Nigerians are not resigned to anything - we are simply tired of all these 'schemes' which neglect the core issue which IS corruption.

There are dozens of suggestions out there - ranging from phased (yearly) 25% subsidy removal to removal with concurrent massive reduction in government wastage, to mandating oil and gas companies in Nigeria to refine products locally as part of their license to operate. Ideas are not lacking, it is the political willpower to make the necessary changes that is lacking.

I agree with you that there are quite a few good ideas out there. Do you have any opinion on how to obtain this political willpower to make the necessary changes? Are you, like most Nigerians, resigned to the idea that since the said political willpower is non existent, we'll  have to live with corruption as a normal part of Nigerian life?

Lets hope recent protests would have forced the President to develop this will power. We'll find out, in a few days, if we are making progress in this regard.

That is a very challenging issue, but if I stumble on any good idea related to this, I'll share it.

OP, you forgot about smugglers taking the fuel to across the border.
They make mega profits instantly with our corrupt officials being paid off. They dont need to wait for your weekly theory.

Seun This is not viable!!! this will only bring about a non-uniformed price and chaos.

seun doesn't understand that. lol

besides, he doesn't factor in inflation for those 3 yrs.

also, he doesn't realize that eventually people will notice the pattern and act in response to it ex. hoarding fuel in hopes of reselling it months later at higher price. people won't even need to speculate on that one.
