Can You Make It Big In Tech Without A Degree by concho(op): 8:53pm On Jul 10, 2025
Good evening, fam.

My younger brother brought up a very important issue today, and I felt it would be wise to share and get your thoughts on it as well.

He has decided not to pursue a university degree but is deeply interested in learning and building a career in tech. At the moment, he’s enrolled in the Google IT Support Certification on Coursera and plans to transition into Cybersecurity afterward.

I didn’t oppose his decision because I know how determined he is once he sets his mind on something. This morning, he asked me a question that I’d love to get your perspective on:

“Is it really possible to earn well in tech without a university degree, especially if I pursue international certifications like Security+ and others?”

Please, if anyone has experience or solid advice to share, kindly help guide him with your input.

Your opinion on this won’t just help my brother, but will also enlighten others who may be considering a career in tech without going through the traditional university route.

Thanks so much in advance! 🙏

100% possible. My younger sister is a UI/UX designer . She is a graduate of statistics and is pretty good at what she does . Here's the catch , the dude who she interned with and was a p.a for was a dropout from unilag. The guy is a highly sought after product designer who makes at least $90k per annum. At some point he was invited by Facebook for a one time design project that came with huge bonuses.
Honest truth, most degrees are worthless in the tech space. The tech course and certification your brother is aiming for is more valuable than the degree you're bothered about.
Let him go for it and ensure he's the best at it. Everything else will fall in place.
