Oga Spyder, hope you would be showing us some pix of the solid block fence too . . . ?

I have a solid block fence on my house on the 6 bedroom (reloaded) page, but the fence is less than 2 years old so it might be an unfair comparison. will look for some pictures later.

You read my mind and i was actually hoping that you would not come and compare a fresh fence made of solid blocks with an old fence made with hollow . . . You just showed your honesty right there.
Thanks for being a great person.

Hi Spyder880, between electrical wiring and suspended ceiling (POP or PVC), which should come first?
Re: Fence Building Section by NL1960: 10:41am On Jan 18, 2012
spyder880:

Better to answer this question with some pictures of hollow blocks not covered.

What do you think of the idea whereby hollow blocks are used and then solid blocks are used for the final layer?. With this, you do not need to do a concrete layer on top of the final hollow block layer.

Unlike the house where the roof shields the walls from rain and shine, the fence is always outside. This will expose the blocks used to do the fence to weather fluctuations, plus other physical occurence like thieves punctuing the fence or the occupants of the compound accidentally ramming into the fence with vehicles. Many people use hollow blocks to do their fences, and I see nothing wrong with this, but it should be covered with concrete capping to make it last longer.

We should also remember the price variance between the solid and hollow blocks. As at this morning, the place we want to lift blocks from are willing to sell thus;

6" hollow. N85
6" solid. N120
9" hollow. N115

It takes more material to make 6" solid blocks than making 9" hollow blocks.

Are you sure of the price of a hollow block ? Where are you located ?

Building seems cheaper in the East compare to places like Lagos. 6" block for N85 compare to N130 in Lagos.

Ol'boy even at that! Dangote is about N2000 (50-200 diff) in Lagos which doesn't make much difference to your price in Enugu but compare N130 to N85 for 6" block. Multiply the N45 diff with about 50-54 pieces of blocks which comes out of a bag of cement.

Spider, what a great job you, Am alone and other Nairalanders are doing here! I must confess that i have learnt so much here. Keep up the good work. Just this morning, i had to ask my best friend in UK who needed some information on building/building materials to log on to NAIRALAND.COM to get all he may be looking for. I feel so proud to be a member here. God bless you all!
If i may ask, how many 6" hollow blocks will complete the fencing of 60 x 120 feet plot of land? And like how many bags of cement will be used for the erection of the blocks?
Thank you!

@Bigz Girlz
I think the gaps are for the reinforcement pillars that will hold the fence.

You are very correct! They are for the pillars. Lately people have been using angled blocks for pillars to save cost i guess instead of rods, gravel, sand, and cement which is more expensive and without a doubt much stronger.

I ask the this question earlier but nobody has thrown any perspective on it.
