LAGOS (AFP) – The Nigerian police warned on Monday that “illegal” protesters would be arrested and those calling for regime change would face treason charges after unions called off a week-old nationwide strike.

“For the avoidance of doubt, any person henceforth found on the streets, roads or pathways in this country continuing with the protests or marches shall be arrested and be charged to court immediately,” a statement said.

It also said “any person or group of persons calling for a regime change before the expiration of the mandate period of the current government is committing treason and will be so arrested and prosecuted no matter who she or he is.”

Top rights activists and opposition politicians led massive rallies during the strike where some protesters suggested the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan step down over the January 1 removal of fuel subsidies that doubled pump prices.

Nigeria’s unions on Monday called off the strike — which was launched on January 9 and brought tens of thousands into the streets — following Jonathan’s decision to reduce fuel prices by around 30 percent.

As Jonathan made the announcement early Monday, soldiers deployed in key spots and occupied main protest sites. Authorities later fired tear gas, shot into the air and used armoured vehicles to disperse protesters.

I though naija don move forward, but I was wrong. These clowns just walked us back into the stone age.

You can not protest in your own country under a democratic government?

This is a new low, even worse than the dark days of Abacha.

Hahaha this same police that ran behind the army because they saw an unarmed mob?

They are now talking?

These jokers around this president have ruined him. The last card a dictator can use is call out his army. After that, what else, secret police? Even Abacha gave up and died.

Make no mistake. It's already all over for GEJ, best bet now is to restructure. This regime cannot last. He played his final card by asking the army to occupy peaceful protesters. I'll see what he'll send against the Mob.

Everyone has the right to protest, however when those protests are taken over by people with patently and overtly sinister motives, any and all reponsible governments will take action.
I do realize that you exist on a strange planet but even there surely governments are changed by elections not mob action no?

All these hypocrites, even those living in the USA.

If you call for the death or unlawful overthrow of a duly elected president even in the USA, you will be arrested, investigated and charged.

NYPD Police Pepper Spray Occupy Wall Street Protesters. This roughly equals the protest in Nigeria

Who are these people with sisnister motives? The people who were going about their lives until GEJ decided to make life harder for them? The same people who were shot at and killed by trigger happy policemen, even though they were unarmed?
If GEJ is paranoid that some peaceful protesters will run him out of town, perhaps he shouldn't be president in the first place.

Any president who will turn the army loose on defenceless citizens deserves to be shot by a sniper, forget impeachment.

Imagine people going so far as to threaten to shut down the oil wells, an act which would have precipitated war without doubt?
Anyone preaching regime change in such an atmosphere to lawless crowds deserves to be tried for treason; perhaps, even summarily shot, in response to their covert declaration of war. National security is supreme over individual freedoms.

What we saw over the past week was people taken over by animal instincts, and that such things must be controlled with the right doses of stiff treatment. We live in a society that is used to tyranny and where sections have taken the gentlemanly attitude as something they can trample at will. They got what they deserved with soldiers on the streets and NLC told to sit down, face the wall and shut up.

Did he send the Army to Lagos because of people threatening to shut down oil wells? Are there oil wells in Lagos? No, your boss deserves to be shot by a sniper. He is a loose cannon.

IMHO, GEJ needs to create channels through which political relevance can be felt in the SW, in order to deflect their politicians from seeking relevance through turbulence. Political isolation always breeds a sense of victimisation. GEJ needs to find novel ways to luv'n hug the SW.

I know you are too hard-wired to reason with, but you will at least admit that if there was no attempt to remove the president (even if by word of mouth) and to disturb the peace, there won't be soldiers on the streets. Do you want him to sit by and watch himself removed from office unlawfully?
Re: Those Calling For Regime Change Would Face Treason Charges – Police! by Nchara: 2:28am On Jan 17, 2012
Let's guess: you could not remove him by election and you want to do so by killing him.

If GEJ was not too stup.id to remove fuel subsidy without any consultation with anybody, there wouldn't be any protest. And may God punish you for that "hard wired" statement.

That is what Aigbofa is openly advocating here, that is what his leaders have been advocating to the area boys at Ojota and that is why there are tanks in Lagos.
GEJ replied by sending them targets to practice against; I would dearly love to see the brave advocates for sniper actions, practice their skills against the army.

Isn't it funny that in a so called democracy, where the constitution expressly made provisions for the removal of a president, these buffoons are trying to criminalize calls for his removal ?

It does not matter if the call was made on the street, in the house of assembly or screamed by a muezzin. The peoples right to withdraw their mandate should be inviolable.

Treason is a language you use for enemies of the state, spies and other saboteurs, not for citizens in a peaceful procession across the streets of your country.

These protests were as peaceful as they come. The only violence we saw was perpetrated by The Nigerian Police shooting and maiming innocent citizens.

BTW, a mob removed Mubarak. Not Ideal, but every Mob has a tolerance treshhold.

Hopefully, Ebelemi will not be pushed to the point of no return by the goons surrounding him.

Folks, there's no need to sweat this out. Firstly, Nigerians outlived IBB, ABACHA, OBJ,etc where is their place in the history of Nigeria. Let him abuse power as he deem fit,it's not over yet, the WAR just began. For all I care, Nigeria has not worked & will never work, they have used the military to sustain the geographical expression and their own LOOTING of public funds @ the expense of innocent lives. Jonathan should stop postponing the doomsday, it's here, when the soldiers can't find anyone on the street to SHOOT, what will they do? They'll shoot Jonathan, it'll happen,no doubt (strategic planning & execution).

However, I'm glad that he's giving Nigerians all these crap, Nigerians deserve it, next time, y'all will not vote out of stupid sentiments. Next election, vote for people will PROVEN RECORDS, not a cluless pauper.

He has done it and he has put tanks out to enforce it. What are you gonna do?

It is ridiculous and absolutely shameless for those outside the oil producing areas to protest. We should all be asking why our states and LG's generate fuckall or even less. Our 100% dependence on oil seems to suggest that the average Nigerians believes their IQ is too low to be productive, innovative and proactive; anyone observing us would think we a too stup!d to develop.
