Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) and leader of the Obidient Movement, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, dismissing speculation about his loyalty.

Obi, whose image now features prominently on ADC’s banners, has told party leaders and supporters that he has “no intention of leaving the coalition,” but requested time to attend to unfinished business with his former party before fully integrating into the ADC.

Speaking in Gombe State, the North-West Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Ibrahim Abdulkarim, explained that Obi’s activities with the Labour Party are linked to prior commitments made before the formation of the coalition.

“Peter Obi is fully involved in the activities of the ADC, but he had certain responsibilities in the Labour Party that predate the coalition. His loyalty to the coalition is unquestionable, and the Obidient Movement will also align with the ADC,” Abdulkarim told supporters.

Loyalty Questions Linger

Obi’s presence on ADC materials has sparked curiosity among both his supporters and critics, with many asking whether he has fully severed ties with the Labour Party.

Party officials, however, stress that his involvement in the ADC is already deep, and that his eventual full integration will strengthen the coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The Bigger Picture

With opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi also linked to the ADC, political analysts suggest that the coalition could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape if the different blocs remain united.

For Obi, the assurance of the Obidient Movement’s entry into the ADC may be a key factor in mobilising grassroots support for the coalition’s bid to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
