The plot to sack Yoruba and Hausa traders from the bridgehead market in the commercial city of Onitsha by Anambra State government, has been greeted by controversy and apprehension by traders and other concerned stakeholders who exepressed fear that the decision could spark off reprisal measures in other parts of the country.

The traders who described the state government’s directive as bias and ethnic-motivated, argued that they were legitimate tenants to the Federal Ministry of Housing and have valid receipt of payment that will expire by 2014, stressed that the plot to forcefully eject them was undemocratic.

Addressing newsmen during a peaceful protest, spokesmen of the group, Chief Lateef Balogun and Tanimu Ibrahim, alleged that the state government had concluded plans to lease the plot of land to a major transporter in Onitsha, adding that they were not given an alternative site to relocate to.

The duo stated that the move to eject them from the place they have occupied over 40 years without compensation or relocation was a subtle way of sacking the Yoruba and Hausa communities in the state, noting that the last attempt to forceful eject them with the use of soldiers left over eleven of the traders dead.
