Who would you rather be: A smart client or poor DIY'er?

Maybe you're a DIY enthusiast like me too.
With a couple of tricks (that have saved you money and time) up your sleeves.

From changing a bulb, tightening a loose screw.
To fixing my generator, my car, my motorcycle…
Those small fixes have kept me from being stranded more times than I can count.

Knowing DIY is great.
In fact, some DIY know-how should be compulsory for everyone.

But when it comes to construction… Yes, you should still learn as much as you can.
But the rules are different.

I’ve noticed that most times, we pick these DIYs up out of necessities.
Technicians and repairers have shown us enough ‘Shege’ that we decide to do without them until it's completely unavoidable.
And when (these same) people say they’re “interested in DIY construction,” it’s often because they imagine they can replace artisans or professionals.

“If I could fix my car myself, how difficult can laying bricks or interlocking be”

And this is where many people miss the point.
They imagine that because they can handle quick fixes at home, they can suddenly pick up tools and do what trained artisans or professionals have spent years, decades even, mastering and refining their craft.

So they watch tutorials, buy a tool set, and suddenly believe they can do it themselves.

I’ve seen people try.
I’ve even been tempted myself (you don't want to know how many times 😁).
The result is… at best, wasted time.
On bad days, a botched project that costs more to repair than it would have to get it right the first time.

So what then is the real value of DIY in construction? Or how should you approach it?

And this is the insight I wish more people understood:
To not learn DIY because they want to “Do It Themselves.”

That the real value of DIY in construction isn’t to cut out/replace artisans.
It's not to become your own architect or engineer.
But to make you a smarter client.

To know and understand enough to be able to:
📍 Describe problems clearly (instead of shrugging and hoping the artisan figures it out).
📍 Diagnose faster, saving time and stress.
📍 Protect yourself from costly mistakes because you know you know what should (or shouldn’t) be happening in the project.

This literally put meaning to “knowledge is power”
Because when you know enough to understand what’s going on, you save time, money, and a lot of unnecessary stress.

Henceforth, think of DIY like learning a new language.
Fluency doesn’t make you the builder.
It makes you a better communicator (& better communicators get better results).
It makes you informed enough to collaborate better with those who are.

So, pick up as much knowledge to empower yourself, that when you work with artisans/professionals, you get the best out of them.

This is the real point of construction DIY 👉 “Smart clients = smart projects”
