A few years ago, I shared my experience on how profitable pepper farming can be in Nigeria ( https://www.nairaland.com/7956959/how-profitable-pepper-farming-nigeria#127756631 ). Many people asked for updates, practical figures, and lessons learned and now I’m back with my 2025 season report. Pepper farming is still one of the most reliable ventures for farmers seeking steady income and strong market demand. The process is generally smooth and straightforward, although it’s always easier said than done. Everything begins with nursery preparation, where you carefully manage seed germination until the seedlings are ready for transplanting. Once they are moved to the main field, proper management becomes the heart of the work consistent watering, timely weeding, and applying the right nutrients to support vigorous growth.

As the plants mature, monitoring for pests and diseases becomes crucial to ensure minimal losses and maximum yield. Common challenges include damping-off disease, leaf curl chilli virus, and whitefly infestations. These can significantly reduce yield if not addressed promptly through preventive measures and proper field management. When the fruits finally start ripening, harvesting is done in batches, allowing farmers to supply the market continuously. With each stage handled correctly, pepper farming becomes not only profitable but also sustainable throughout the season. This season, I decided to kick things off with the Nsukka pepper, especially after weighing the rising cost of the super habanero variety. Many farmers and consumers underestimate the indigenous variety, but the truth is that it is far from the “inferior” crop people assume it to be. This indigenous variety has proven itself in resilience, adaptability, and economic value qualities that make it a smart option for farmers balancing cost and performance. At the end of the day, what the market truly cares about is simple: do you have pepper? Most buyers don’t bother about the specific variety; they just want a steady supply and good-quality fruits. As long as your pepper is fresh, available, and well-priced, it moves. That’s the reality of the business. This year, a bag of pepper sold for as high as ₦100,000, and even now with prices around ₦25,000-₦30,000, But as always, it’s easier said than done. In reality, pepper farming requires patience, consistency, and proper management before the numbers start making sense. Profit is possible sometimes even impressive but it comes only after the work has been done right.

As farmers, we also have to think strategically. You go with what can give you what you want, and you choose the variety that can give it to you for as long as you need it. Sometimes the smartest decision is not the most hyped variety, but the one that works.
