Tribute To Thomas Sankara by Mamajama(m): 3:10pm On Oct 15, 2007
He was known as one of African best leader. Even though he is gone but we will never forget his accomplishment as a leader.

How sad we don't have the same oustanding memories about our own leaders in Nigeria like the IBBs, the ABACHAs or the OBJs.

Burkina Faso is paying tribute to its late revolutionary leader, Thomas Sankara, on the 20th anniversary of his assassination.
Known as Africa's Che Guevara, Captain Sankara was hailed by admirers as a charismatic and revolutionary leader.

But he was killed when his former comrade and current President Blaise Compaore seized power in a coup.

Sad that such a visionary leader like Sankara had to die the way he did and considering the fact that the person he trusted most killed him one begins to wonder what human beings are capable of.

Well, Vasta was put to death because his best friend wanted him to die at all cost.

Celebrate our leaders for what?  impoverishing  the nation? or looting the treasury

Or keep deceiving us?  please give us reasons to celebrate our leaders.

You can not associate Thomas Sankara with our leaders, they are not in the same category at all.  Prime example.

He replaced government Mercedes Benz cars with small Renaults.

How many leaders in Nigeria has taken this measure?

Sankara is one fine african leaders that stand above all.

But what did africa do to 'Blaise Campaore'?, the man that killed his friend, Sankara, and took over as President?

Nothing was done, rather he was welcome to commity of Nations as a leader.

Thats where african problem lies!

We never speak in face of evil.
cool sad shocked cool

What did African leaders do to IBB for killing Vatsa?

are serious or just trolling

Vatsa was a coup plotter! Just like OBJ killed Dimka.

Please dont reduce Sankara's murder to same level as this.

I would have loved this sankara guy, had I not stumbled upon a 1987 magazine some days ago where he was quoted saying he would die as president. That's crazy! Do you part and leave.
Re: Tribute To Thomas Sankara by Ndipe(m): 3:16am On Oct 16, 2007
Denex, maybe he had an intuition that he was going to die during his tenure as President of Burkina Faso, hence that statement. And pardon me, wasnt that statement made like days prior to his assasination?

I think Sankara was one of the best preidents to preside on the African continent. He really tried to empower women in his country. I did not know too much about him, until much later when he had passed away.

Why would Africa continue to waste her best? Why would people like Thomas Sankara not last while people like Robert Mugabe and Mobutu Sese Seko last till almost forever, why? why? why?

Years ago, I stumbled on an old magazine where Sankara was told that there was a rumour that Blaise Compaore was planning a coup against him, he simply told the reporter that if it was Compaore planning the coup, he (Sankara) would not be able to escape it because this was a guy that knew everything about him, would go to Sankara's house and demand that his wife cooked for him, and that his mother considered him (Compaore) as her son. They were that close. Unfortunately, it turned out to be true and he was wasted. I also read that Compaore also later killed the other two guys with whom he along with Sankara planned the initial coup that brought Sankara to power. What an irony!

babasin please stick to Bakasi. If you only knew how Thomas Sankara was killed. Was Vatsa not IBB childhood friend?

Was Vatsa not IBB best man?

SANKARA must not be forgotten. He is a man of courage and integrity

Some interesting quotes by Thomas Sankara from wikipedia

Quotes
"We hope and believe that the best way of limiting the usurpation of power by individuals, military or otherwise, is to put the people in charge. Between fractions, between clans, plots and coups d'etats can be perpetrated. Against the people, a durable coup d'etat cannot be perpetrated. Therefore, the best way of preventing the army from confiscating power for itself and for itself alone is to make this power shared by the voltaic people from the outset. That's what we are aiming for, "

"It's really a pity that there are observers who view political events like comic strips. There has to be a Zorro, there has to be a star. No, the problem of Upper Volta is more serious than that. It was a grave mistake to have looked for a man, a star, at all costs, to the point of creating one, that is, to the point of attributing the ownership of the event to captain Sankara, who must have been the brains, etc."

"That is the hidden side of November 7 revealed. Mysteries still remain under the cover. History will perhaps be able to speak about it at greater length and to assign responsibilities more clearly."

"As for our relationship with the political class, what relations would you have liked us to weave? We explained face to face, directly with the leaders, the former leaders of the former political parties because, for us, these parties do not exist any more, they have been dissolved. And that is very clear. The relationship that we have with them is simply the relationship we have with voltaic citizens, or, if they so wish, the relationship between revolutionaries, if they wish to become revolutionaries. Beyond that, nothing remains but the relationship between revolutionaries and counter-revolutionaries."

"I would like to leave behind me the conviction that if we maintain a certain amount of caution and organization we deserve victory[, ] You cannot carry out fundamental change without a certain amount of madness. In this case, it comes from nonconformity, the courage to turn your back on the old formulas, the courage to invent the future. It took the madmen of yesterday for us to be able to act with extreme clarity today. I want to be one of those madmen. [, ] We must dare to invent the future."

Very sweet boy indeed. May God rest his soul.

Copied the following from Mathaba.net

An incorruptible man

A major anti-corruption drive began in 1987. The tribunal showed Captain Thomas Sankara to have a salary of only $450 a month and his most valuable possessions to be a car, four bikes, three guitars, a fridge and a broken freezer. He was the world’s poorest president. (This is after four years as president)

Sankara refused to use the air conditioning in his office on the grounds that such luxury was not available to anyone but a handful of Burkinabes.

When asked why he had let it be known that he did not want his portrait hung in public places, as is the norm for other African leaders (and as Blaise Compaoré does now), Sankara said ‘There are seven million Thomas Sankaras’.

15 Oct 1987 Sankara is assassinated in a coup d’état along with 12 aides. His body is unceremoniously dumped in a makeshift grave which quickly becomes a shrine as for days thousands of people file past it to pay their respects. Popular feeling forces the new regime to give Sankara a decent grave.

Once again, may the good Lord rest his soul
