How I Put Myself Into Trouble Learn From My Story by olubunmimary100(op): 5:51am On Feb 16
Good morning everyone

I don't know if this is the right section to post this thread.

An incident happened to me two weeks ago, on my way heading to church, I saw an infinix hot 8 phone, I took the phone to see if there is a way to locate the owner but the phone was off, that day happens to be on Wednesday, at last I was able to locate the owner on Friday, on the screen saver of the phone I saw the picture of the owner, the owner happens to be a welder, I had to locate him and give the phone back to him, he was very excited and he thanked me for returning the phone.

I was on my way coming from church on Sunday when the guy came with two policemen to arrest me that I stole the phone where he was charging it with 500,000 and power bank, and also borrowed 3k recharge card on the sim card, he was screaming very hard at the police station.

Instead of the police to investigate the matter, they said I was at fault that the phone has spent more than 24hours in my hand.

To cut the long story short,it was people In that area that came to my rescue that that was was always high on substance like weed and Colorado that the police should not mind him, after I was detained for over 24hours, i I was told to pay for the power bank, pay the 3k and bail fee....

Life is a lesson

The more we live the more we learn
I have learnt a very big lesson.

Nothing like more details or so
I decided to post my experience so that others won't fall victim
Doing good can put someone in trouble
A lot of innocent citizens are in trouble because of the crime they haven't committed.
If such happens next time I know the next thing to do.
It's either I break it or throw it into the river.
I can't even go to the station to report to the police.

Nigeria Police need total overhauling! At this point, I don't even know who is worse between them and Agbero boys.

The way they force people to write imaginary statements is legendary. They can make you 'confess' that you were the one who started World War II.

Forget 'Police is your friend'—that's the biggest lie of the century. If you have a choice, just pray you encounter Soldiers instead. At least Soldier go just give you small 'reception' (beating) and let you go, but Police? They will drain your pocket and still frame you up. God help us in this country!

For instance you said you picked a phone from where? In a bus, on the road, charging house, church where exactly do you pick up the phone?

Lessons learnt.

Should you return a lost phone again? YES

How should you do it? Get 3 witnesses and draft a simple lost but found agreement, stating exactly what you found. Let the owner of the lost item sign that he accepts that you are not to be held liable for anything after returning the phone which you saw.

Ideally, this should be done in a police station but only very few of those criminals in uniform can be trusted.

Document the events (most likely with video recordings) from when you found out, how you were able to reach out to the owner, etc.

Include in the agreement that if the owner of the lost item ever turns out around to falsely accuse you, you are at liberty to sue him/her to court.

Corollary:
I just saw a post where someone said something about picking up the phone of someone who was murdered.

That's a tricky one. And that is where proper documentation is important. Do not pick up a phone with your bare hands. It's not like we have proper criminal forensic capacity in Nigeria, but better be safe than sorry.
While making a video, draw the attention of 3-4 passers-by. Let them know you saw the phone and you are not willing to carry it. One idiot might claim it's his/hers, the wayray don claim problem be that.
However, if nobody claims it, then the police can be notified via call (no waka enter police station o....hmm) to come and pick it up. As soon as police appear, and you don video their face, moveeeeeee!

Make sure your video recording is a live stream. E get why too..... God go help us

When we hear a situation where someone spent years in jail for purchasing a phone that got missing the day the owner was killed, why will I pick another person's phone on ground.

Only a person that has not been dealt with same way will do that
