He sends his family across the Jabbok River, engages in an all-night wrestling match with a divine "man" (God), receives a dislocated hip and a new name—Israel—signifying his struggle with God and man, and ultimately seeks divine blessing.

Key Events in Genesis 32:
Meeting Angels at Mahanaim: As Jacob travels, he encounters angels, which he views as a protective "camp of God".

Fear of Esau and Preparations: Upon learning that his brother Esau is approaching with 400 men, Jacob experiences intense fear and distress. He divides his people and flocks into two groups to ensure some might escape, and sends11 substantial gifts ahead to appease his brother.

Desperate Prayer: Jacob humbles himself before God, acknowledging his unworthiness and reminding God of His promise to protect him, saying, "I am not worthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant".

Wrestling with God at Peniel: Left alone, Jacob wrestles with a mysterious "man" (identified as God or an angel) until daybreak.

The Blessing and New Name: When the "man" strikes Jacob’s hip socket, crippling him, Jacob refuses to let go until he is blessed. He is then renamed Israel ("he struggles with God" or "contends-with-God", marking a transition from his former life of manipulation to a life of reliance on God.
The Limp and Covenant Sign: Jacob calls the place Peniel ("Face of God" because he saw God face to face, and he leaves with a permanent limp, which serves as a reminder of his encounter and leads to a dietary restriction for his descendants.
