Death Of The First Elected Prime Minister In Africa by chigopat1977(op): 1:55pm On May 20
On June 30 1960 a Black man stood in front of the King of Belgium and told him the truth to his face. 🇨🇩
Standing before dignitaries and the Belgian king who had come to grant Congo its independence, Lumumba looked him in the eye and said: “No Congolese worthy of the name will ever forget that independence was won by fighting. Slavery was imposed on us by force. We remember the blows we had to submit to morning noon and night because we were Negroes.” The king looked on in shock.
The room went silent. The world was watching.
Lumumba then made a promise to his people that would cost him everything.
“We shall show the world what the Black man can do when working in liberty. We shall make the Congo the pride of Africa.”
He never got the chance.
His tenure as Prime Minister lasted exactly two and a half months. The CIA allocated $100,000 to have him assassinated. CIA chemist Sidney Gottlieb personally carried a vial of poison to the Congo with instructions to place it on Lumumba’s toothbrush or in his food.
In August 1960 — less than 60 days after independence — President Eisenhower personally discussed plans to assassinate Lumumba at a National Security Council meeting. The US State Department confirmed this in 2013. The minutes of that meeting still exist.
Britain was also in the room. Howard Smith, who later became head of MI5, wrote internally: “I can see only two possible solutions to the problem. The first is the simple one of ensuring Lumumba’s removal from the scene by killing him.”
America. Belgium. Britain. All three governments plotting the murder of an African Prime Minister before his first 100 days in office were complete.
On January 17 1961 Lumumba was executed by firing squad after a long torture session. Before they killed him they made him eat the paper on which his independence speech was written. His body was cut into pieces and dissolved in acid. A Belgian officer kept his gold tooth as a souvenir for decades.
Congo sits on $24 trillion worth of minerals. It has not had a stable government since the day Lumumba died. That is not a coincidence. That is the point.
They did not just kill a man. They killed a country’s future and called it Cold War necessity.
His last letter to his wife said: “History will one day have its say.” 🌍
It is having it now.
Which is more disturbing — that three Western governments conspired to murder Africa’s first elected Prime Minister, or that none of them faced a single consequence for it?
