Some plants grow so fast that you can watch them move. Bamboo holds the world record for visible growth in real time.

The species in question is from the genus Phyllostachys. The plant produces new shoots that rise from underground runners at astonishing speeds. A single bamboo stalk can add 1.5 inches to its height in just one hour.

The growth occurs in sudden bursts rather than continuous motion. The plant absorbs water into its cells, which expand rapidly and push the stalk upward. The movement is slow enough to follow but fast enough to notice without time-lapse photography.

Bamboo forests can regenerate after cutting faster than almost any other type of vegetation. A harvested bamboo grove can return to full height within a single growing season. The speed of growth makes bamboo a highly sustainable building material and an effective carbon sink.

A plant that reaches for the sky while you are standing still watching it climb. The fastest green thing on two legs without having any legs at all. 🎋📏🌱😮
