NL is becoming a bunch of guys who don't mean well for Nigeria. They spew all kinds of negativity and crap. If you hate this country so much, why not relocate to another country. The man has taking a stand and to be honest, no former IG has ever critisized the police force like this man just did. No one has ever spoken the truth like this. Whether he will match it with action remains to be seen but he deserves to be given the benefit of doubt and help to his word. He has even provided direct numbers to his office. Let's all come together and do our part. Most of you spewing crap have nothing to contribute to Nigeria but ur negativity and evil wish. What have you ever done for Nigeria? Nonsense!

Mr. IGP

Please, if you want to really make a difference, I suggest you do the following;

- set-up a special unit of non-police peoples with a dedicated line (preferably a shortcode like 911, 999, 119 or whatever, whose job would be to receive and document complaints on criminal activities, police brutality and abuse of authority.

- Please, withdraw the police from private individuals. It is sad to see a team of up to 8 mobile policemen escorting one expatriate and yet whenever you call the police to come investigate a problem, they are either under staffed, or out of fuel for their vehicle.

- Also, the Nigerian police should now embrace the Information Technology System. Every police station in the country should have a fully functioning I.T department where cases are loaded into, complete with paper evidence and pictures of solid evidence as well as the photograph of suspects and sureties. This paper system has got to go as it is easy to compromise. Most importantly, this system should be networked and backed up at multiple bases incase one of your corrupt officers decides to commit arson in order to destroy evidence.

- Radio/walkie-talkies. This should be an essential part of the Nigerian Police. Its surprising to see check-points with Policemen who do not have walkie-talkies, I wonder how information is passed around especially on a mobile suspect that needs to be intercepted. This is the cheapest and most effective means of communication in the police worldwide.

- Financial accountability. I just went to the police station a few days back to get a police report on my missing wallet which contained a few valuables and I was asked to pay 3000 naira. I asked for an official receipt acknowledging the payment and receipt of the money and the Police officers attending to me at Moscow road Police station in Port-Harcourt said and I quote "the police does not give receipt". I think this has got to stop. The Nigerian police needs to liaise with a bank and set up a system that allows for accountability.

- Equipment. I think the police uniforms and equipments need to be re-branded. First and foremost, those long AK-47 rifles need to be taken away and replaced with 9mm Beretta's. I say this because in a situation where a policeman is inside a vehicle and gets attacked, the length, weight and recoil of the AK-47 puts that officer at a tactical disadvantage in terms of maneuverability. Moreover, the effectiveness of a weapon isn't dependent on the size but on how well you use it.

Uniform.- The Nigerian police uniform should come with a bronze logo, complete with their official Number and Name tag. They should also have on their belt, a holster for their guns, a holster for their batons, a handcuff pouch, pepper-spray, a mini-torchlight and their radio/walkie-talkie. Also, a colour that doesn't hide dirt should also be chosen as most officers are dirty and filthy and don't launder their uniforms for weeks.

- Training. There should be regular training and workshops organized for every officer atleast once a year. Also perform incentives should also be given to exceptional officers who distinguish themselves in the line of duty. This training should not be relegated to just local places but also internationally. Opportunity should also be provided for ratings/corporals who go on courses and excel to achieve very high positions within the force.

- Zero tolerance for corruption. This should be first and formost on your list. an act of maybe 15years - 20years in prison for any law enforcement agent found guilty of taking bribe, aiding and abetting a criminal offence and extra-judicial killings.

- Welfare and Insurance. I think a good welfare package should also be set up for the police. Its sad to see that the people who are supposed to lay down their lives to protect us live like rats and have to beg the masses for change and even rob them if need be. An insurance/compensation package worth atleast 3million naira for officers killed in the line of duty should be set up as well.

- Discipline. This is lacking in the police force today. It is sad to see an officer directing traffic and making a phone call at the same time, of a police officer sleeping inside of a traffic booth in the middle of the road, or a police office looking untidy and unkempt at 8.00am on a Monday. Infact, the pride has got to be restored to the police force.

- Roving patrols. This should replace these stagnant checkpoints as most people now use alternative routes to avoid checkpoints. Also, most crimes occur on back streets and alleys and not on the express road.

IGR - The police have got an endless well of money in Nigerians, because we violate the laws on a regular basis and if the police force were effective, the number of fines and arrests made daily, should make the Nigerian police one of the richest orgainsations in the country. BUT please do set up a system whereby these fines are not too exhorbitant and also payable in banks and not over the counter at the station.

Psych Evaluation. - All officers should be psychological checked atleast once a year by a psychologists to determine thier fitness. Especially when they have been involved in a shootout and killed someone.

I almost posted a topic yesterday on the check point that is constantly mounted along Lagos Airport road (by Under bridge bus stop). Can you imagine Poilcemen begging for #20 along an airport road that is said to be the busiest in West Africa. Its so bad to see these men block the road around 7pm daily with sticks and stones which reminds one of Federal Highways in the East. For me, I will use that particular check point to know the effectiveness of this order.

Re: No More Road Blocks- Igp by Ninilowo(m): 6:17pm On Feb 14, 2012
Ogun state command is d worst of all commands in Nigeria. The IGP should beam his search light on d state. Also the minimum requirementt into d ppolice should be first degree cos most of the men on d road are drop out who cannot even read plate number of vehicles.

Re: No More Road Blocks- Igp by Nobody: 7:41pm On Feb 14, 2012
If the armed robberpolice officers leave the road, they would take off their uniforms and start robbing on the roads. Its a win-win situation for them. So this is not particularly a huge development. Oga IGP should retire many of the top officers in the force, that are corrupting the entire police system. All these DPOs especially.
