i bought a 1996 peugeot 406 3months and ago and the gear has been faulty giving me problems, my mechanic is now susgesting i convert the gear to manual transmission whereas its an auto transmission.i dont know how to go about this cos i have already spent alot of money trying to fix the auto gear, i would like to have the contact of a peugeot specialist if anyone has it.and i am even thinking of selling the car maybe the buyer would fix the gear himself,

Viperman

i called your guy and he was telling me 250k for a 406 gear, the gear should not be that expensive and a friend told me that maybe i should go to owode onirin that i can get an accidented 406 where they can just remove the gear and sell it for cheap, do you have any contact there

Auto transmissions are expensive! One of the reasons I voted manual tranny in the recent poll, "manual or auto tranny"?

Manual transmission are pretty rugged and vice-free, auto's can be problematic. It also requires an expertise beyond the scope of most regular Peugeot specialists.

What's actually the problem with the transmission, doesn't it engage gear? Is it noisy? Does it fail to upshift? Give me some more information, I may be able to help.
Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by showbobo(m): 7:25pm On Oct 20, 2007
Thanks bro, when driving it at times it jerks and seems as if its going to halt.and at times the D wont work and i would have to use 1,2or 3 to move it.also it doesnt engage at times and makes some noise, a mechanic already worked on it twice changing one rubber or so and collected 35k each on the two different occassions.now he is suggesting i spend about 100k converting the gear from AUTO to MANUAL and i dont know how effective that would be, has anyone ever converted a car from AUTO to MANUAL ??is it advisable??
Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by sultaan(m): 6:11am On Oct 21, 2007
You bought a car with a bad transmission.
What does your tranmission fluid look like? Red, Brown, or Black
Smell burnt? or did your mechanic try to change it for you(might be too late)
Changed rubber for N70k! bull-turd shocked.

For that price you could have a friend get a used one shipped in from France.

You might need a transmission rebuild, salvage one from Owode, or go to a Peugeot dealer to see how much a new one costs.

Welcome to the new age, 5-speed/manual is the best option for naija. You went out to buy a car without knowing what to look for. Transmission service is done every 60,000 mile or 5 years. If you want to buy a car over 5 years check/ask to make sure it was done, or prepare to do it yourself( make sure you have the factory specified fluids)

A lot of tokunbo owners will be having the same problem soon, using A/T in country where the norm is to top off engine oil is not a good idea.
Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by showbobo(m): 10:08am On Oct 21, 2007
you got it all right sultan, the problem started when the mechanic advised me to change the oil cos it was brown, he had to empty all the gear oil and put a new one and since then its been hell, can you help me get a gear from your end??any help on this matter would be appreciated, thanks bro
Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by Nobody: 11:09am On Oct 21, 2007
I have converted cars in the UK from auto to manual, but honestly, in Nigeria, it's not an option - especially if your mechanic has charged you 70k for what I can only imagine are rubber seals! Now he's saying it'll cost you 100k for the complete conversion! I doubt you'd get the whole job done for 300k, you'll need:

1) 5 speed manual tranny
2) Flywheel (auto has driveplate)
3) Clutch assembly
4) Clutch cable
5) Speedo cable (different between manual and auto)
6) Driveshafts (different between manual and auto)
7) Selector linkage
cool Tranny mount on left hand side (different between auto and manual) but MAY come already attached to manual casing
9) Miscalleneous parts.

Budget 4.0 hours labour for the job, I've no idea what labour rates are in Nigeria.

You're better off getting a good auto tranny shipped from the UK, as a direct replacement. They are dead cheap here, you can purchase a complete 1999 Peugeot 406 here for as little as £300, my sister just got a 1998 1.9 TDI with factory A/C for £275!
Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by Nobody: 11:19am On Oct 21, 2007
Peugeot 406 1999 for 300 pounds?? shocked shocked How do i get one Siena pls?
Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by Nobody: 11:36am On Oct 21, 2007
David, Peugeot 406 are not very highly rated over here. Their diesel models are worth more than petrol models, a 1998 petrol model here with over 100,000 on the odometer is virtually unsellable.

A lot of diesel models are very cheap, as they are a favourite of mini cab drivers, and do rack up huge amounts of annual miles. The HDI models are pretty tough, and cheap to run, just not very popular amongst private users, unless they're company / lease cars.

Siena

can you help me ship in an AUTO TRANSMISSION gear, how much would that cost??let me know pls
Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by Nobody: 5:26pm On Oct 21, 2007
@ showbobo: Not sure how much shipping would cost, but I could always enquire.

I'll need a bit more info about your particular model:

1) Engine size
2) Engine type, i.e petrol or diesel
3) Approximate year of manufacture

Ideally, a VIN / chassis number will be ideal.
Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by sultaan(m): 6:02pm On Oct 21, 2007
Your mechanic probably put the wrong oil, or even engine oil in your transmission. You are not paying to get your car fixed, consider this a tuition for learning what you should have nown before buying a used car.
Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by Nobody: 6:38pm On Oct 21, 2007
Sultaan's dead right, auto tranny's are very, very sensitive to any sort of foreign body in the ATF. Which is why it's critical to wipe the dipstick with a clean, lint-free cloth when checking the level. Never tissue, as the tiny microfibre's play havoc with the valve chest at the bottom of the transmission.

And, a lot of "mechanics" forget there are 2 fluids - ATF (Dexron II) in the transmission side, and gear oil (EPX 75W-80) in the differential / final drive side.

These 2 fluids must never be mixed, the differential side is fairly forgiving if the wrong fluid is used, the automatic gear side is NOT.
Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by sultaan(m): 6:18am On Oct 22, 2007
Hey Showbobo,
what type of fluid does your 406 transmission use?
I'll like to know what type of engine oil, filter your car uses.

I should be able to give you a very helpful suggestion if you can give me thses infos.

Re: Peugeot Specialist Wanted by sultaan(m): 1:13pm On Oct 30, 2007
You mean the one at Agidingbi/Awolowo way intersection?

I was going to tell you that your mechanic put the wrong fluid in and you will have to flush the system with factory fluid. This is the time for you to know what type of fluids your car uses. Stop paying without knowing what you are paying for your lack of knowledge about your car isbeing used to rob you.
