No fewer than 14 persons lost their lives at the weekend, following a motor accident which occurred at crusher, Felele, on the Lokoja-Abuja highway.

An eye witness disclosed to the Nigerian Tribune that the accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XD 579 GHA and a Mercedez truck with registration number XP 338 BEN .

The source said most of the victims were travelling for the burial ceremony of their relations.

It was further gathered that the accident happened when the Toyota Hiace bus heading towards Abuja dangerously overtook another vehicle and in the process, collided with the truck on the opposite direction conveying tomatoes from Katsina to the Southern part of the country, killing 14 persons on the spot.

The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Michael Olapade, who confirmed the accident, attributed it to dangerous overtaking.

He said the deceased were occupants of the Toyota bus and that they were all dead before the FRSC rescue team could get to the scene, adding that the driver of the bus ran away.

Michael said among the deceased were one female adult and 13 male adults, adding that the corpses had been deposited at the state specialist hospital and the Federal Medical Centre.

The sector commander, while cautioning motorists on need to obey traffic rules, advised passengers to always prevail on their drivers to observe speed limits.
