Govt to extend BRT to Ikorodu
February 16, 2012 by Kunle Falayi

The Lagos State Government has approved the extension of Bus Rapid Transit services to Ikorodu area of the state.

The spokesperson for the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Mr. Kolawole Ojelabi, said in a statement on Wednesday that the plan by LAMATA was endorsed with an inspection of the proposed bus terminal at Mile 12 by Governor Babatunde Fashola on Tuesday.

Fashola reportedly said his visit was to see the real layout of the proposed terminal and expressed satisfaction with the work done so far.

The governor said, “We are trying to work with the transport union to relocate them from their current site and get first hand information about the local issues on the site that require government attention.

“With all these going on, clearly the economic imperatives would follow; jobs and development for our state.”

Managing Director of LAMATA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said the authority required a parcel of land for the bus terminal for the BRT extension, which would further boost transportation around Lagos.

Modernisation of Mile12-Ikorodu road to cost N30bn – Fashola

Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, on Monday said his administration was committed to implementing the modernisation of Mile12-Ikorodu road to improve movement in the area.

Fashola, at the celebration of his 1, 700 days in office, appealed to residents of the area for understanding, saying their present discomfort would soon be over.

He said, “The design of the road is ready and we are working with the Federal Government and the World Bank to conclude financing on the project, which will cost about N30bn.”

The governor said the government was also working to link Ikorodu with Ajah through Ibeshe Road. He added that the road would remove the problem of travelling through the metropolis to reach Lekki and its environs.

What does "modernization" really mean here? The usual tar-and-go? Or are actual improvements added to not only tackle the traffic problems in that stretch, as well as flooding problems, among others?

Proposed 4th Mainland Bridge On Course

Published on April 2, 2012

The Lagos State government says the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge is still on course as government is determined, and that the on-going development of the jetties to link the eastern and western parts of the State will not hinder the project.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Kadri Hamzat disclosed this while inspecting ongoing projects in Eti-Osa Local Council Development Area and environs explained that the development was in tune with the intermodal transportation plan of the government.

He noted that the state would soon become a giant construction works yard, expressing satisfaction with the spate of work at various sites visited.

Hamzat noted that since the commencement of water transportation the daily passenger using ferries had risen from 400,000 monthly to 1.4 million; a figure expected to increase to over four million when the jetties are completed.

The Commissioner also stated that the completion of the 3 new jetties along with those being rehabilitated at Mile 2 and Oworonsoki will ensure the end of the perennial gridlock that characterize moving around major parts of Lagos.

Hamzat said that the on-going litigation on the Osborne jetty site would not distract the state government from accomplishing the goals of water transportation, adding that “it is in the character of the administration to obey laws.”

According to the Commissioner, the bridge development had been concessioned, while government is also promoting water transportation with a capacity of moving over four million people monthly in a more effective and efficient manner.

He disclosed that contracts for over 180 roads had been awarded across the state, covering both the rural and cosmopolitan areas, adding that the state government had incorporated the period of rainfall into its master plan to ensure appropriate project delivery.

The commissioner pointed out that the state government, bearing in mind that Lagos is a coastal city state, has incorporated the possible flooding resulting from rainfall into the master plan of road construction by including the upgrading and construction of drainage channels that would ensure proper discharge of water from the roads in the event of rising sea level.

Hamzat also explained that projects which were not performing to expectation would be re-awarded to ensure that the intended benefits get to the people.

Lagos begins expansion of Ketu- Ikorodu road at N29 billion

Lagos state government has announced the commencement of the expansion and re-development of the Ketu-Mile 12-Ikorodu axis.

The state’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, announced this at a town hall meeting with people of Ikorodu recently.

The Commissioner said the re-development, which will involve expansion of the road into six lanes and an integrated median demarcation for BRT buses, will cost N29billon.

The road will also have pedestrian bridges designed to allow ease of access for commuters while preventing access by non-users and barriers that ensure unhindered movement for the buses.

The contractor, which has already mobilized to the site, is Chinese Construction Company, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, (CCECC).

Hamzat said the government plans to create alternative routes for dwellers in that axis given the traffic count and increase in the number of residents.

He added that the project, based on the initial survey will see the road cross from Ojodu/Berger to Isawo.

Dr Hamzat also said that the state government had been in talks with neigbouring Ogun State to partner it to redevelop three roads that are linking their border communities.

He named roads as the Ikorodu – Sagamu Road, the Akute-Ojodu/ Berger road and Epe –Ijebu Ode road.

According to him, there had been fruitful discussion between the two governments to facilitate the quick delivery of the projects.

He added that in the face of nil response from the Federal Government which has responsibilities for the roads, it has become expedient for the states to act in the interest of the people.

Why proposed 4th Mainland bridge is delayed, by Hamzat

NOTWITHSTANDING some issues that surround the take off of the proposed 4th Mainland bridge, Lagos State Official last week confirmed that physical works would soon commence.

They said though preliminary works had started, the state government intends to address several concerns over the planned infrastructure project.

Besides, property development along the corridor has slowed down, following recent pronouncement of officials that consultant has commenced works on the project, especially, when it was noted that original alignment would be altered in the face of the new hydrological research carried out that favours the alteration.

This development, according to them, has given room for land speculators to increase their operations along the axis, reeling out information that is creating panic among the public.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure in Lagos, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, recently confirmed the development and debunked the rumour that the project has been abandoned. He explained that the old alignment was observed to be very cumbersome because of the number of buildings that may be affected on the right of way.

“It might be extremely destructive, if we want to follow the old alignment. We might probably need to destroy a lot of good buildings. This option is not fanciful to us. So, we have to look at another right of way.”

The alignment of the 26-kilometre infrastructure designed to link Ikorodu with Eti-Osa Local Government Area, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, was initially to connect Ikorodu from Langbasa, along the same axis, but experts’ view was that the route “would be too long despite the fact that the terrain is ecologically dangerous”.

Hamzat, while explaining the rationale behind the delay on the project, noted that if government would continue with the original plan, a good number of buildings would be affected, but that with the new alignment that consultants are working on, it would be a preferred option for the right of way.

He however acknowledged that consultants are working out the cost implications on the new right of way. “We will look at the cost-benefit analysis of the alignment in terms of its cost-effectiveness. We are considering if it is better to pay compensation than going through another alignment. The experts are already working on it, and the report will come out soon”, he said. The Commissioner, said that though people may not see the physical work at all for now, because physical structure like bridge is not what one can jump in there and start to build.

However, based on the unfolding reality, property owners along both axis (both Ikorodu and Eti-osa), are said to be getting apprehensive over the development. The apprehension rose over what some of the landlords perceived as the seeming impossibility of getting their property demolished without adequate compensation.

“The fact of the matter is that majority of us in this area do not have the necessary documents and this is due to the circumstances that forced many of us to come here in the first instance. Besides, government has a lot of commitment to many people in terms of compensation, where similar projects are taking place”, said Dr. Jubril Adeyemo, who cited example of Lagos-Badagry, Ijora and Ketu-Ikorodu road expansion where scores of property owners are on queue to collect their compensation.

“Usually, such project would facilitate easy movement, access to other states like Ogun, Ondo, even. Edo. So, it is certain that price of land would appreciate, while land speculators may also have a field day”, said Mr. Joseph Bakare, a surveyor, who practices in Ajah area of Lekki.

Sanwo-Olu: Fourth Mainland Bridge Not Our Priority

Olaseni Durojaiye

Concerned with the seeming slow pace at which some critical road projects are being executed in Lagos State, the governorship candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said the construction of Fourth Mainland Bridge would not his priority if elected.

He said this while fielding questions from respondents on radio programme recently, assuring Lagos residents of their commitment to ensure early completion of the Lagos-Badagry expressway.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his running mate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, emphasised the need to ensure the completion of ongoing critical road projects that included the Lagos Badagry expressway

According to him, both Badagry and Lekki-Epe expressways are so critical to the economy of Lagos, that no effort must be spared to ensure their early completion. To this end, issue of the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge may be delayed.

Specifically, the governorship candidate explained that the ongoing 60-kilometre Lagos-Badagry expressway project being executed by the state government should be completed as early as possible.

He noted that the project “has two major intermodal transport schemes namely; the Lagos-Badagry Expressway and the Light Rail Mass Transit with their accompanying infrastructure- 10 lanes superhighway taking off from Eric Moore interchange and traverses westward through Orile Iganmu, Alaba Oro, Mile 2, Festac, Agboju, Iyana Iba, Okokomaiko, Iyana Era, Ijanikin, Agbara, Ibereko and terminated at Badagry.

“The goal is to connect Lagos with the ECOWAS countries. The initiative would no doubt, enhances the commercial and other business activities between the affected neighbouring countries.”

Besides, he acknowledged the importance of Lekki-Epe Expressway, which he said would be expanded and reconstructed, especially, from where it stopped now to the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) in Akodo.
