New Chairperson of the Governing Council of the National Human Rights Commi-ssion, NHRC, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, yesterday, asked the Right to Know Initiative, R2K, to publish his attested assets declaration, which was sworn on November 23, 2011.

Ene Enonche, National Co-ordinator, R2K, in a statement, said: “This disclosure is important in underlining the critical role NHRC must play to ensure effective implementation of the Freedom of Information Act. It is noteworthy that Prof. Odinkalu, who was a leading advocate of the FoI Act as a private citizen, has not shirked from the implications of the Act for him as a public official.

“Asset declarations are intended to protect the interests of both the public officers and the public whom they serve. Nigerians have a constitutional right to verify these facts, as government officials are elected and appointed to act as custodians of the public interests and must ensure they do not compromise their positions by seeking to wrongfully profit from public office.”

Details of Prof. Odinkalu’s declared assets include: personal earnings from two Standard Chartered Bank accounts, with balances N94,000 and $11,700, respectively; two Barclays Bank accounts in the United Kingdom, containing £7,752 and £4,562 respectively; and an overdrawn Royal Bank of Scotland account.

Details of buildings owned include a mortgaged three-bedroom mid-terrace house in Edmonton, London; and a four-bedroom semi-detached house in Lekki, Lagos.

There are no undeveloped lands. Vehicles declared include a Toyota RAV 4 purchased in 2004, and a Kia Rio purchased in 2005.

Also declared in the form are a personal pension plan managed by Friends Provident; shares and stocks worth about N3 million; 27 KVA Nioda generator, 7.5 KVA Inverter, and over 10,000 books, whose worth, according to Prof. Odinkalu, are “invaluable.”

Am sure this guy will,  I have listened to him for several years offer constructive criticisms on human right abuses by government agents. I think he is one of those rare people in naija.

Why did he leave out his undergarments? i'm sure his collection of boxers and 'briefs' must be worth something.

Not only at the beginning and the end but at regular intervals depending on the position held and the parastatal like surgeons regularly check infectious disease status. This is one of the things our reps should be rapping on constantly. So that while a director in a 'John the Baptist' agency with a shoe string budget such as the human rights commission may be checked in and out over his career, a clerk in the PPPRA should be asset checked every last working day of the week and perhaps the police work in their underwear.

I commend him. and I think this declaration is fair and reasonable unlike some lecturers with billions.

The man is way before his time.

He probably should have waited to serve after the coming cataclysmic wave sweeps all of them thieves away forever - GEJ and his minions - including the Governor of Ekiti state that declared hundreds of millions of Naira - an ordinary man protesting on the streets of London together in the aftermath June 12 cancellation days.
