Friends,
If only people would read the Word of God for themselves! –And do so under the anointing of the Holy Spirit so that deceptions wouldn’t sway them from the Truth! (1 John 2:26,27) Sadly, however, too many people will not, and thus counterfeit christianity thrives as it holds people in perpetual bondage.

Doesn’t the sickly church give us reason to wonder why Jesus says that the Truth will set us free? (John 8:32) And why He tells us that HE sets us free? (v. 36) Free from what? Because most church-going people I’ve ever met don’t act that free at all, and often do admit that they’re not. Oh, free from Hell, they’ll claim they are, but free from sin or fear or lies or sadness or anger or some kind of worldliness…? –No.

What is the problem? The problem is that most church-goers are not walking in the Truth. We have to walk (live / abide / follow / adhere to) the Truth. There’s only one way and that way is the Truth. Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6), but He is also the Way –as well as the Life (for now and into eternity). People will say they are in Jesus, but a person cannot be in Jesus if they are not in the Truth, for Jesus and the Truth are synonymous.

Why are people not walking the highway of Truth? –Because they are trying to serve two masters. Jesus tells us that this is an impossible feat (Luke 16:13), so when people attempt it, they are automatically diverting themselves from the Truth. Once diverted, they fall into all kinds of falsehoods, deceptions, and sins, and if they refuse to repent of their love for wickedness and lies, God will send them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and be condemned. (2 Thes. 2:10-12)

Why then should anyone be complacent about meeting with others who adhere to false doctrines? How can anyone be nonchalant about calling such others “brothers in Christ”? Yes, there’s some room for differing beliefs concerning “disputable matters” (Rom. 14:1), but how many disputable matters are there when we have a whole Bible full of very clear teaching? –Clear, at least, for those who are reading it under the tutelage of the Counselor who we Christians are all supposedly in-dwelt with.

Well, we all know that “Bad company corrupts good character.” (1 Cor. 15:33) This “bad company” applies not only to those who love to carouse, but also to those who claim Jesus yet love to follow false doctrine. We should “not be partners with them” (Eph. 5:7), but should keep away from such “warped, sinful, self-condemned men” (see Titus 3:11) and even expel them from our midst if possible. (1 Cor. 5:11-13) For anyone who welcomes someone who continues in a counterfeit gospel shares in his wicked work. (2 John 1:7-11) “Watch out for [them]… Keep away from them.” (Rom. 16:17) “For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites.” (v. 18) –Their own appetites which crave power, deception, and sin. “By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.” (same verse) –People who are naive because they do not know God or His Word.

Are we being unloving when we shun those who continue in corruption and false doctrine? No. Instead it is unloving (to both God and the individuals) to pretend such people are fine. And if being “loving” or “pleasing” to a human causes us to turn aside from the Truth (John 12:42,43 // 1 Thes. 2:1-6), then we’ve actually shown hatred toward God. (James 4:4)

What then is the antidote? It is to diligently study God’s Word for ourselves and to come to know the Lord intimately as He teaches us His Truth from it.
