These Tanker drivers are fast becoming a nuisance. Who do they think they are?  angry angry

PETROL tanker drivers in Lagos State, are poised for war with the Lagos State government, following the expiration, on Wednesday, of a 72-hour ultimatum given to them to relocate the fuel tankers parked at Mile 2 area on the Oshodi/Apapa Expressway.

During Nigerian Tribune’s visit to the area, tanker drivers were yet to vacate the expressway, while motorists and commuters were subjected to untold hardhip as a result of the affected drivers’ refusal to comply.

Though the state government threatened to enforce the order, some petrol tanker drivers, who preferred not to be named, told the government to provide an alternative park before demanding compliance.

While the tanker drivers are insisting on not leaving the spot, the state government has said there is no going back, insisting that “enough is enough of the menace of tanker drivers on Lagos roads and the killing of innocent people."

Briefing newsmen shortly after meeting with the representatives of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Petrol Tankers Drivers (PTD) branch, the state Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, said it was possible for the tankers to leave the road without any stress, as most of the tank farms have the parking facility to accommodate at least 500 tankers in their loading bay.

“Between now and the expiration of the ultimatum (Wednesday), the state government expects union members to remove their tankers on their own volition, as the state government will be there on Thursday to monitor the removal exercise.”

Opeifa stated that government would be at the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway today immediately the ultimatum lapses by the midnight of Wednesday, to monitor the clean up.

He called on the operator of Capital Oil at 2nd Rainbow on the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway to remove all abandoned and disused tankers that were illegally parked on the service lane, noting that the tankers posed great danger to the safety and security of the citizens.

Opeifa also urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to issue loading tickets in batches and only in proportion with the amount of petroleum products available for loading in order to ensure that only those tankers that would load within a particular period were asked to come to Lagos.

government should do the right thing first by providing an alternative to them.

Because na govt provide park for Chisco and ABC motors.

I believe the Govt should do even more. Its not only the petroleum tankers that are causing the wahala o.

How about container trucks loading at Tin Can? Their own is even worse.

Do you leave here in Lagos? Have you forgotten that a place was allocated to them at Orile by Tinubu before he left? They must face the consequences this time. Let’s even get it straight, are they making the money for Lagos state or FG?

This is caused by the collapse of the piping system.

In the past petroleum products were piped to inland depots, such that a truck supplying fuel to fuel stations in Ibadan need not come to Lagos to load. With poor maintenance and vandalisation of pipelines, fuel trucks now come to Lagos from the hinterland, park on the roadside (the driver and conductor usually sleep under the truck), while waiting to load products. PPMC must get the pipelines working again and provide mechanisms to check vandalisation. Only trucks supplying fuel to the Lagos area should be allowed in Lagos.

They need "ORDER FROM ABOVE" that is how Nigeria works.
The tanker drivers are most likely employees of some other person

Kudos to the Lagos state government for standing up to these touts. They should give them a deadline and impound any trucks left there after it passes.

I wonder how long it'll take the useless federal government to do something about the trailers parking along Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Just 3 days ago, a bus coming from the north at night ran into one of them near shagamu, killing up to 10 people. Not a single month passes without a car or bus running into these dangerously parked trucks on unlit roads and killing people.

Maybe we should start praying that a minister, or senator, or maybe one of GEJ's relatives should be on the next bus that crashes. That may be the only way we'll see some change.

Na God go punish all of them

Unfortunately, the way this usually plays out is, the government seizes a few tankers, the tanker drivers go on strike, citizens cry out due to hardship occasioned by fuel scarcity, then the government releases the tankers in response to thw cries of the citizens.

Exactly, u took it out of my mouth. The tanker drivers penchant for going on strike has become legendary. If a police man takes N50 from a tanker driver, the union goes on strike, if an okada hits a fuel tanker, tanker drivers go on strike, if the rain falls, and the roads are flooded, tanker drivers go on strike, if the Lagos state govt says, "hey, dont park there", tanker drivers go on strike. when they park on the bridges and the govt says, "no please", they gp on strike. If Shell substitutes one of their staff as a member of the union, they go on strike. What is this??

simply madness.

Nigeria is filled with so many unions, factions and movements holding us back. NURTW, NUPENG, NLC, SSANU, so many associations with vested interests and ulterior motives.

We really need to crush a few of these 'unions' to move forward. Not by repressing them though but by providing alternatives or laws that render them helpless.
