Jonathan, OBJ Feud Deepens by Babasessy(m): 9:46am On Apr 07, 2012 |
President moves to erase predecessor’s legacies The resignation of former Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s Board of Trustees, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has been traced to the disagreement between him and President Goodluck Jonathan over attempts to discredit some of his legacies by the government. Obasanjo shocked political watchers when he issued a statement earlier in the week announcing his resignation of the leadership of the PDP’s influential organ further confirming his weakening grip and control in the country as Jonathan further asserted himself. Chief Obasanjo was the president of Nigeria between 1999 and 2007 and he is reputed to have a hand in the emergence of his successors, iAlhaji Umaru Yar’Adua and the incumbent, President Jonathan. However, like the late Yar”Adua, President Jonathan has since started distancing himself from the former president, particularly over political issues which Obasanjo felt strongly about. A source told Saturday Mirror that the emergence of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as the National Chairman of the party against the Obasanjo’s choice of the former Agriculture Minister, Adamu Bello, may have deepened the feud between the leaders. Obasanjo was key to the understanding between President Jonathan and the political class that he would serve only one term in office, but sources say that the enthronement of Tukur recently was a clear indication that Jonathan may not be keen on keeping to his words. The former president was also disturbed by the political development in the party, particularly as President Jonathan who is the PDP leader reneged on his promises to ensure that South-West produces the Speaker for the House of Representatives. It would be recalled that Obasanjo vowed to resign his chairmanship of BoT should the injustices meted to South-West is not revisited. This recent violent shut down of the operations of MAEVIS Limited, which has a concession to manage facilities at four key Nigerian airports initiated by the Obasanjo’s government gave a clear signal of the moves by the present administration to rubbish the legacies of the former leader. Persons familiar with the development confirmed that throwing MAEVIS out of the airports, coming on the heels of the crushing defeat that former Obasanjo suffered at the PDP convention that produced Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as the party’s chairman, finally compelled the former PDP BOT Chairman to severe ties with his godson, whom he single-handedly positioned and installed as president. According to a source who spoke to Saturday Mirror, “Obasanjo had wanted a former Minister of Agriculture to become the PDP chairman but Jonathan outwitted him and ensured that his choice of Tukur carried the day and within matter of days, a concession originally brokered during Obasanjo’s tenure, was forcefully ended.” An aide to Obasanjo said he saw the attempts to forcefully end the MAEVIS concession as “a calculated attempt to rubbish his legacy” and criminalise economic decisions that were taken with national interest at heart. The former president was said to have frantically tried to reach out to President Jonathan to appeal for him to give MAEVIS a breather because the concession between the company and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) was first hatched under his administration and solidified during the tenure of late President Umaru Yar’Adua. “The attempt by Baba to meet Mr. President to explain the sensitivities and national implications of the concession suffered repeated setbacks until that company was eventually thrown out,” one of the sources, who does not want to be named, said. http://nationalmirroronline.net/news/36394.html |

A source told Saturday Mirror that the emergence of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as the National Chairman of the party against the Obasanjo’s choice of the former Agriculture Minister, Adamu Bello, may have deepened the feud between the leaders. I said it here: https://www.nairaland.com/906612/obasanjo-resigns-as-chairman-pdps/3 Indeed. Folks who think OBJ is resigning for noble reasons should take a trip down memory lane. OBJ went out on a limb to assure aggrieved elements that GEJ would only use one term as President. He acted as the 'guarantor' of that pledge. In fact this was what swayed the like of Yuguda,Sule Lamido et al to get on board when they were previously against GEJ's ambition. All these guys 'simmered' down because they calculated that they would spend a second term as Governor and then run for the ultimate office. GEJ himself then went further, knowing that is what many wanted to hear, broadcasting it all over the place that he would only spend one term. At one stage he could not stop saying it everywhere. |

If it was good for OBJ to canvass for the Third Term Agenda. . .nothing wrong with GEJ seeking the same. Whether OBJ installed Yaradua to quench on Nigeria is not our business. Lessons learned. . .Man proposes. . .Man disposes! Whether Yaradua quenched after 2 years. . . is not GEJ's business. GEJ MUST HAVE A FULL 8 YEAR TERM! 2017 it is! THIS IS AFRIKKKKKKKA!!! May the best crook win. AfeniFEFERITY. . .Please, take a back seat for a change. You are only relevant in ACN and your 'local zones'. You had your 8 years. It is GEJ's turn. Go and enjoy your oil subsidy windfall. Thanks to OBJ! YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW. . . mu he he he he he he I lovvvvvit!!!! |

antartica: Gej is a grand schemer,he is not too bad. I can picture him as a faceless BUKO man plotting to cause mayhen with his stunchmen strongiy behind him. You think treacherous behaviour all over the place makes GEJ a "grand schemer"? Geezer is just increasing the number of long knives aimed at his back when he consistently goes against the principle of "honour among thieves". The establishment just sees a man , not to be trusted, who will deserve whatever he gets because of how he possesses a deceitful character that makes him highly treacherous and totally disinterested in keeping to any agreement. It is all coming out now. When IBB, Atiku, Ciroma et al were at the point of tears calling GEJ a dishonourable man who went against an 'agreement' he swore to abide by, Mr. President's kinsmen rounded on those folks on NL. We can all remember those folks and many Northerners saying "GJ cannot be trusted". At least now, this one is playing out before all our eyes. We were all here when GEJ was making his pledge of serving one term. Trying to make that one term into 7 years via a constitutional amendment is still treachery because GEJ knows damn well what he meant by one term i.e 4 years. Whatever happens, we know who to blame. OBJ is not averse to treachery. Indeed he was one of those egging GEJ to run when Yar Adua died but even OBJ knows this is taking things too far. There will naturally be repercussions. I just hope Nairaland fans of GEJ don't come here trying to sell an image of a man 'innocently' besieged by "born to rule" enemies when GEJ is behaving just as badly as anyone his fans have ever criticised. Whether you see it or not, GEJ has joined "animals like OBJ". 2 Likes |

Its payback time for Obj,this is a true picture of the limitless power of the presidet. Back to the matter,I think GEJ is not as foolish as we all think he is very calculative and falling baba's hand like that is a good start and the next presido will fall his own hand. Never under estimate who sits in the seat of POWER |

Alxmyr: The dog that want to go astray first bark at its benefactors. You have spoken wisely . Sadly, ethnic jingoism has forced commonsense to take flight in the minds of many Nigerians. You cannot go around thinking cash inducements of everything and everyone will help you overturn treacherous actions always. It was fairly obvious what our treacherous President was up to when he made tenure elongation a "no going back" priority after being sworn in while serious issues were left pending . I personally don't care for OBJ and my views of him are well known to most Nairalanders. All in all, this probably serves OBJ right because he was serving his own selfish interest when he decided to be backer and promoter of the most mediocre in the land. OBJ always rejected those who want to lead and are good at it(Duke et al) to settle on those he knows have no passion, drive, vigour or talent for leadership. Nonetheless, GEJ is doing the man a big disservice by reneging on the promise he knows was sold partly to some aggrieved PDP hawks with OBJ's clout and sagacity. GEJ now thinks he is master of the game. He has had his way by imposing Dickson in Bayelsa and Tukur on the PDP. Let us continue to watch as events play out. Let ethnic jingoists fond of revisionism note what is going on now so that when aggrieved PDP thieves intensify their effort against a fellow PDP thief they consider has wronged them with treachery(GEJ) these Nairalanders do not spam the forum with crap about "born to rule parasites want a minority President to fail". We can all see that GEJ himself is certainly no saint, peacemaker or 'gentleman'. 1 Like |

Will be interesting to see where his journey of deceit and treachery will end! OBJ surely helped to put this less than mediocre idiota in power, so he can not complain much. However, now that he is washing his hands of it, I hope the Goatbrain president and his supporters (mainly because of tribe) will not be shouting all round when the snakes he is rearing turn around to bite him. There's honour even among thieves but this thief is surely playing too smart and one thing we would have to see is where this ends. If they finally put him on a stake and decapitate him figuratively, he would know he is responsible for his fate and greed. |

Tomorrow when they are dealing with GEJ and formenting problems for him, his myopic kinsmen will revise history to make GEJ the saint being haunted by Northern "demon". Never mind that GEJ, with his actions, shows that he is no different to those he is in a power struggle with. It was not for nothing many of us repeated that GEJ is a dangerous man. In fact he is the most dangerous type imaginable in that he acts without thinking of the far-reaching consequences of his actions. He is not concerned with sensible restrain vis-a-vis actions that can heat up the polity in ways no one can predict. Let us be honest with each other. If GEJ reneges on a promise to his fellow callous brutes and killers that he will serve a single term, then he should prepare for their response since he knows it will surely come as per the repercussion of his treachery. We were all here when GEJ , desperate to garber support and endorsement, was shouting, non-stop, that he will only serve one term. What will be good is for Nigerians not to forget this stage to then go declaring GEJ innocent and 'persecuted' in future. Simple. |

It is interesting for me to see that Jonathan can do evil by himself. I am no fan of OBJ but based on our fathers' saying that any river that does not respect his source will definitely dry. I feel Jonathan is going for self destruction. Jonathan should be ready to dance to the tune when the drum starts beating. I know for sure all his actions are inspired by tribalism. What a shame of a Nation. I strongly feel it wont be long before PDP implodes. |

I love it. whatever a man soweth that he shall reap. this is exactly OBJ type of game to his god fathers, why should anybody give this action a tribal tune OBJ is a selfish man let all south-westerners here stop making this issue a tribal one. let OBJ reap the fruit he sowed. Yes GEJ couldn't make a yoruba the chairman of house of assembly. but the question is why?The north was still angry by then, SW couldn't agree a candidate from PDP, tinubu want to defeat OBJ intentions, the east was angry on the plans to sideline them after their heavy contribution that make GEJ/PDP intention a success. Now tell me who will vote a SW candidate. GEJ carry dey go nothing do you. Infact catch all evil men in naija and throw them to jail, that will give you the popularity you need. |

Pardon me, but why do I perceive this vibe of gloom and doom is er- er - sectional. Well, maybe because it is. Anyway, as a reminder Obj stated he needed more time for his international commitment hence the need to resign as BOT chairman. Every and any other reason is conjecture - baseless or not. If and when issues arise due to Obj resignation, it will be dealt with. Not all of us are bought into the GEJ is a big bad wolf projection, and we are certainly watching things unfold - for the better! |

Odu-toda-iwa: He has always been capable of it and that is why, at every chance, he has willingly sought the assistance of the Danjumas, OBJs and Anenihs of the world. It is obvious to good students of politics what GEJ is. He is not modern, visionary or pro-reform. In fact he is a total adherrent of the retrogressive politics of those he embraces enthusiastically as political allies. Bamanga Tukur ? It is therefore a foregone conclusion that a disciple of retrogressive politics, regardless of spin-masters efforts to portray otherwise, will eventually show his fangs. This is what we are seeing now with GEJ. |

I wonder if all of us here are reading the same posts above -who exactly is supporting OBJ? Seems to me what the posters are saying is (a) that OBJ, GEJ etc jointly foisted an injustice which GEJ is now extending past reason! (b) OBJ is NOW quickly dissociating by cutting all ties because he knows there will be dire repercussions. (c) Unfortunately, the allure of power (which is transient) is swaying the current beneficiary of this "political" injustice into believing that he has capability to withstand any fallback! (d) That is an error of judgement! I believe this analysis well thought out. But we will see soon enough anyway |

Learn from nuclearboy below and get you ethnic jingoism, "SW losing out" and ACN crap out of this thread . Nuclearboy, just like you, read the thread but understands totally what posters are saying. You, on the other hand, are an example of a blind worshipper/defender swayed totally by ethnic jingoism. You will never see that this is about GEJ stating unequivocally , to secure all the support he gained in the first place, that he will serve only one term while his machinations make it obvious he will run in 2015. I knew it won't be long before we start getting your sort of blind defense of GEJ fashioned out of the notion that this is to do with SW folks losing anything. If GEJ's current path of treachery leads to further chaos for Nigeria, I hope folks like you will remember this thread before you open your mouth in his blind defense. For the avoidance of doubt, I don't care about OBJ. I am however keen to point out GEJ's treachery , the likes of you will conveniently develop amnesia to in the future, that may spur aggressive response later. You and your ilk will then interprete issues as a case of an "innocent" minority President being targeted by the major ethnic group you all now run around calling "parasites", "born to rule" and all unsavoury names. Open your eyes to see GEJ is also doing wrong so that you spare us your nonsense in future and recognise, once and for all, that issues are about greed, power and the control of Nigeria's wealth for warring camps in the ruling Party. The USA even said as much. Sadly, it is innocent Nigerians who suffer. nuclearboy: I wonder if all of us here are reading the same posts above -who exactly is supporting OBJ? Nuclearboy, thank you ojare. This is the problem with most Nigerians. Simply too emotional and ethnically biased to reason straight. I am from the SW yet have I supported OBJ here ? This issue is about the treachery of the Nigerian President that may have dire repercussion for all Nigerians. The one we are in now with Boko Haram we are not yet out of and GEJ wants to compound that headache. In future , when the worst happens, he will simply do what he is doing now i.e let Nigerians die like Chickens because he knows he cannot overreact against those fighting him for legitimate reasons as per the notion of "honour amongst thieves". |

Nigerians are in for a rough ride, it was obvious that GEJ would run for a second term, it serves OBJ right to be stung by the mediocrity he imposed on all of us, the earlier GEJ ships him to prison the better; as for GEJ, he will also get his own in future, he is sowing the wind and will reap the whirlwind, the only obvious way out for him is great governance, sadly, he is incapable of that. |
