UNPRECEDENTED LAY-OFF BANKING STAFF? 3. FLOOD RAVAGING OUR FARM PRODUCE 4. SENSELESS KILLING AND VIOLENCE ACTS ACROSS NIGERIA 5. UNATTAINABLE LOOTING LEVEL OF OUR COMMON PATRIMONY 6. DILAPIDATED HEALTH FACILITIES 7. SMOOTH MOTOR ROADS ACROSS THE NATION? 8. 9. (they are many. Kindly add your own) |

@Proxytalk If Naijas economy was growing at that juggled rate we'd see that on her people. Tell do u still have 112million poor people, biggest number of slums, bad roads, poor electricity. Actually one city in SA can light whole of nigeria. YES SMALL NIGERIA. As said OIL DISCOVERIES in Kenya, Namibia,Madagascar,SA etc..are gonna slow ur growth. The problem is ur so HUNGRY TO SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE. |

AwodwaGyanOniwe: Theres nothing to celebrate on this REBASING STORY. Other than its just crooked politicians who are just trying to u happy by this nonsense. This still doesnt benefit ORDINARY NIGERIANS. Number one spot with million of people living in poverty, poor roads, poor electricity supply etc.. But didnt you comment and say the exact same thing about Nigeria on some other thread concerning Nigeria's economic growth?..... It's obvious you're not pleased by the growth taking place in Nigeria and thats fine but please spare us all the hoolabalu... Fact is Nigeria is growing at a pace and i don't care how significantly small or large it is as long as we grow. Thats because even if i don't get to benefit a whole lot from it, my children or grandchildren will and thats enough fulfillment for me. |

A jobless one with little or no game that gets mad when he sees a Nigerian chatting up their girls....I know his kind.....A dead guy. Wow its nice to be over confident, by the way its the poor SA girl that usually go for naija man only for there drug/scam money. Now I don't really appreciate my fellow SA brothers tone towards nigeria on this topic, I take offense of the usual bigotry on SA Blacks because when looking at the stats even with a 7% growth why are there so many planes full of Igbo Naija brothers coming to SA every week, why don't they stay in there prosperous 7% growth economy especially the educated ones I'm not talking about those who come to SA to hustle on the streets of Hilbrow. By the way a economy based on consumption is doomed to fail at some stage if this growth doesn't co inside with domestic manufacturing capacity. For others on this thread the reason why SA has a 2,6% growth rate is because of SA's main trading partners the EU/US manufacturing sluggish growth and recessions currently which had a immense effect on Africa's most industrialized state. For now Nigeria huge population and its middel class is driving the economy, but we know its not sustainable in the long run. There are many countries who went through a consumer driven boom the US is a prime example of such. If a country can't control its consumption and focus on education and savings driven industrialization like China, Japan and many other who did this 30 years ago it will create a pyramid economy like Nigeria is today. I just hope that the current growth in sub-saharan countries will address the continents poverty levels and not just to line up the pockets of connected people who a few sprinkles of sugar around to keep the masses happy and hoping for a better life. |

And if their attitudes about consumption, fashion and entertainment are any indication, the country's widespread poverty and unemployment aren't keeping them from living the good life. On the contrary, young Lagosians are busy keeping up with the Joneses. Designer clothes, SUVs, private jets: Nigerians sure seem to know how to enjoy themselves. In Banana Island, the country's priciest residential area, a three-bedroom flat goes for over 315 million naira (over 2 million US dollars). So is it Paradise? Someone from the slums of Ajegunle who finds himself walking these streets would be forgiven for thinking so. But don't be deceived. Only a minuscule few can relish in the glitz. Stupendous wealth lies side by side with abject poverty. In Lagos, the country's largest city, it's normal to find shanties just around the corner from the world's most expensive real estate. For instance, a few kilometres from the tony Lekki Phase 1 is Ikota Estate, a slum inhabited by low-income earners. In fact, two in three Lagosians are believed to be slum dwellers. Minimum wage-earning Nigerians earn about 19,400 naira (123 US dollars) per month. What's worse, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, over 60 percent of Nigerians live in absolute poverty. The National Directorate of Employment reports that 67 million Nigerian youth are unemployed - worrisome considering over 70 percent of the total population is between 15 and 24 years old. |
