Three brand-new FIFA Technical Centres are now planned for Bauchi, Anambra and Lagos States, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced Monday night.

The centres are to be financed with the sum of $1.4milion (about N2.2billion) which is the money the country is entitled to under the second phase of the FIFA Goal project.

In 2005, Nigeria first benefited from the FIFA developmental project in form of an astro turf and a technical centre which also boasts of hostel facilities.

NFF Secretary General Musa Amadu, said that aside the existing technical centre in Abuja, the federation had resolved to have more of such facilities across the country to fast track the growth of football.

Nigeria had originally sought to use the FIFA money for the construction of a new football secretariat but it resolved to put the money to other use when government decided to directly bear the cost of the secretariat.

A new football house at the cost of N336m is already under construction. Its funding is sourced from the money raised by the Presidential Task Force on World Cup 2012 headed by Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State.

Musa said the first of the new centres will be built in Bauchi, while Anambra and Lagos are to follow suit.

In a related manner, the football federation has revealed its desire to end the practice of inviting players registered with Nigeria Premier League clubs for U17 national team assignment.

According to Musa, under the new initiative, players are now to be sourced from the grassroots, attached to the U13 and U15 teams, from where they will graduate to the Golden Eaglets.

The usual practice of drawing players from professional league sides has always come under criticism for it partly encourages age falsification, as players well above the age ceiling often end up in the U17 team.

Newly employed technical director, Tom Saintfeit is expected to assist in the grassroots football development across the country when he officially resumes next month.
