i love riddles but this one fooled me for almost a week

you are in a strange land and you are lost

you come across a crossroads and you know that one road leads home the other leads to certain death

in this strange land there are only two types of people, the first ALWAYS TELLS THE TRUTH HE CANNOT LIE

the second always lies ,HE CANNOT TELL THE TRUTH.

ONE OF EACH OF THESE MEN IS AT THE CROSS ROADS

these men know what way leads home and which to certain death

NOW YOU CAN ONLY ASK THEM ONE QUESTION AND IT MUST BE THE SAME QUESTION

from this question you will know which road is the safe road

CAN YOU THINK OF THE QUESTION?

just home back to your family and friends.

@prodgalson,if u ask which way leads home to each of them u'll still get opposin answers
cuz if right's the way home,the lair will say left and the honest man will say right and that won't solve the problem.
i must say my friends and i have been crackin our brains on this 1 tryin to find what the question should be.

This is a practical question I see no reason to even theorize it, I'll show my hands (both) to one of them and ask." do I have 5 fingers on each hand" if he says yes. then  he says the truth so I ask Liar which way is home, and go in the opposite direction.

liar on the other hand will obviously lie and say you have six fingers, so I go to truth and ask him the way home.

ask each of them what the other would say then, go the other way.


if "Road A" were the way home
and
"Road B" to Certain Death

ask the "Truth Guy": where would the "Liar Guy" point if I asked him the way home? "Truth Guy" would point to "ROAD B"

then

ask the "Liar Guy": where would the "Truth Guy" point if I asked him the way home? "Liar Guy" would point to "ROAD B"

both of them would point to the certain death road, you just go the other way. simple really.

Riddles are cute and Peoms are beautiful. That was very nice up top.

broccx answer assumes you know which person is the truth teller and which is the liar, if you knew which was which you would not have the problem in the first place. Also you have to ask each the same question.

How is this a trick question or a riddle? If the truth gut tells the truth always then and the liar always lies then the simple question which way leads to death will get you home. How much IQ do you need for that?
