Re: For Lawyers In The House! by mamus2010(f): 7:20am On Nov 16, 2007
@ ibis,

i understand how you feel, but you have to understand the legal profession. first of all, you are not allowed to advertise(remember your RPC), so the best way is to drop your cv's at the law offices and website and hope they call you.

but as a matter of fact, i can tell you that the easiest way to get into a law firm is through referral, and no lawyer on nairaland will refer you except they know you personally, afterall vouching for those you know is tough, talk less of those you dont know. so your best bet is to network and hope for the best.

i tot i was the only only one who was of the opinion that getting a job as a lawyer is becoming increasingly difficult. It is worse off in places like warri where i reside especially if you happen to be a married woman. the law firms pay peanuts as in like between 5k and 7k a month if you happen to get one that would employ you. the Govt has placed an embargo on employment here so it is terrible. .
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by ibis: 9:05pm On Nov 17, 2007
after all our jacking in uni and law school, u come out and your own senior colleagues will be offering u peanuts!!!!!

i still think the best places for lawyers to practice and see small money still remains Lagos and Abuja.

a lot of lawyers that would have made good litigation lawyers are marketers/ in operations or customer service in banks!

any vacancy i hear of (because as mamus 2010 said most legal recruitments are done in house) i will post.

I stand to be corrected, but the RPC does not say a legal firm cannot advertice vacancies in its legal office, the rule in a nutshell is to the effect that a lawyer can only indulge in minimal advertisement of his law office and the services he or she provides, and that is totally different from advertising for jobs in a legal firm, cheers,
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by nonysmith(m): 7:13pm On Nov 18, 2007
abeg which one they abuja make we apply hahaha
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by colors(f): 11:11am On Nov 19, 2007
well i'm of the opinion that as a lawyer you are not tied down to litigation or work in a law firm. i believe we are equipped to be diverse. so pls instead of us killing ourselves over peanuts in law firms lets be creative. lets think outside the box. diversify, diversify, diversify. we didnt spend all those years in school to earn so little. we spend all those years so that we can explore other areas where our legal knowledge can be put to good use.
my learned colleagues, its time to think outside the box!!!!!!!!!
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by dom(m): 1:47pm On Nov 19, 2007
unless one is rabid about law practice, I see no reason why anyone should pidgeon-hole himself. Almost every organisation or Govt body in Nigeria has a legal department. Recently EFCC advertised. Some state Judiciaries provide for Legal Assistants for Judges. I think one ought to look farther and wider. I believe law practice is a calling, requiring divine patience. (did someone say 7k?)

On Abuja, a couple of the newly sworn in Judges are looking for Legal Assistants. You might want to give it a look in.
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by yourhuby: 3:25pm On Nov 19, 2007
This is an excellent idea guys. its rather sad that we have very few juicy offers for lawyers . howeverwe could think of forming a leauge from here to hel our selfs you know what doo you think?
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by mamus2010(f): 7:18am On Nov 21, 2007
@ la babe,

LOL who am i not to pick your calls? how dare me?

@ moneysmith,

thank you for pointing that out. i was typing that post in a hurry and ended up passing the wrong message. what i meant to say was that the rule against advertising makes law firms less visible, that means you may have walked past a law firm without any clue you were walking past one (where i did my service is one example).

@ ibis,

i can pick a couple of law firms in your list as good examples of places where anybody should not dare work, cos there they will stress you, insult you and dash you peanuts for all your wahala. there are others on your list that is strictly on who you know basis(a staff actually told me and i almost fainted!!)

@ all,

if you want to practice as a lawyer, you must really have that focus and be ready to turn a blind eye to things like money, some public holidays e.t.c so you dont get discouraged. and please do not fail to network, its your best bet.
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by yourhuby: 5:56pm On Nov 21, 2007
hi Guys Would you want to join the Nigerian league of progressive lawyers(NLPL)?its a forum for progressive minded lawyers, the group would act as a opinion group within the NBA and Nigeria at large we are also deeply involved in pro bono and street law services, the gruop is just starting and we need layers with zeal and ideas to join us especially those within 1 to 5 years.
if you intrested just send a mail indicating you intrest to arrowmikky@uk.nz, or visiteche@yahoo.com or paulankwa1@yahoo.com. it would be a pleasure having you in the league.
we hope to secure a capacity building partnership with the open society for justice initiative (soros foundation very soon.)
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by yourhuby: 6:22pm On Nov 21, 2007

sorry the league of young lawyers or something ,cant remeber the name, so where are your activities mainly located.is it lag or abj or where, also would love to join but geographical location would play a big role for me cos am in abj.thank you
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by onimine(f): 3:01pm On Nov 22, 2007
it is good to think outside the box. please know that jobs such as efcc, legal assistants etc ultimately depend on who you know whether you merit it or not. as for the list of law firms, you would have to pass through the eye of a needle to get into them unless you are well connected or sure to get fat briefs for the firms. infact some of those firms insist you must have a car before they can employ you.
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by yourhuby: 4:35pm On Nov 22, 2007
thanks for your intrest in the league, like i said its a network we have members acros the country, in lagos warri, makurdi, jos, minna and maidugri you can belong to the league where ever you are, we ll be converging from time to time in different places. our first convention would be first quarter of next year we have not concluded on the venue yet it might be jos, lagos or abuja so just send us your email and contact and well keep you posted, we ll send you a copy of our profile
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by ibis: 6:13pm On Nov 23, 2007
another tip for lawyers is to do a masters.
an LLM still remains very attractive to employers and you stand out if you have one.

better qualifications also go a long way too.
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by mamus2010(f): 9:26pm On Nov 24, 2007
@ your hubby,

whose hubby are you sef? grin i think that is a good idea. as much as i would love to participate in it, i may not be able to cos right now i'm not in the legal profession and i'm not missing that. i'll love to join just so that my knowledge does not rot!!! so if you would welcome a passive member that will contribute from afar, then my email is mamus4ever@gmail.com

@ ibis,

sola adepetun(of adepetun, caxton-martins agbor and segun) once told me that the masters was on the job!! so i always advise you get some experience before getting a masters, that way you always have the edge

I am also a lawyer but left practice about a month ago due to the poor pay, but i just found out i'd prefer practice because its more challenging and gets your brain working. But for now-money matters oh! grin
Re: For Lawyers In The House! by teeroy(m): 1:24pm On Dec 10, 2007
There's no rule that says a lawyer must work in a law firm. We are trained to fit into lots of positions in different corporations. The truth is that love of the law is not often enough to sustain one in these hard times. Most law firms pay peanuts. Some corpers even earn more than the ridiculous sums that most of these law firms pay.

Having a master's degree in a specialised area of law often helps a great deal. It puts one in a better position in terms of landing a good job.
