Edo Governorship Election: Jonathan, Anenih Meet To Perfect Rigging Plan

SaharaReporters learnt of a secret meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Sunday night to perfect a plan by President Goodluck Jonathan and a coterie of officials of the Peoples Democratic Party to rig the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State.


The meeting, which featured President Jonathan and Tony Anenih, the self-styled “Mr. Fix It” of the ruling PDP, focused on strategies for capturing the Edo Government House,” said one of our sources. The governorship election is scheduled for July 14, 2012.

Apart from President Jonathan and Mr. Anenih, the meeting was also attended by the PDP’s governorship candidate, Major-General Charles Airhiavbere (rtd) and Dan Orbih, the Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the party. There were also a few other participants considered key to Mr. Anenih and Mr. Jonathan’s scheme to snatch the Edo governorship at all cost in the upcoming election.

One source disclosed that Mr. Jonathan is determined to win the state in order to help him gather enough delegates for his 2015 re-election project as his support from across the country is said to be dwindling on a daily basis due to poor performance.

In addition to losing political support from his erstwhile northern allies, Mr. Jonathan is reportedly disturbed by his loss of appeal in the South-West and even in his base in the South-South.

A source close to Mr. Anenih told SaharaReporters that the former chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP as well as the party’s leadership in Edo State were upset by the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to suspend the continuous voter registration in Edo State. Mr. Anenih and the PDP had planned to use the voter registration to flood the voter registry with fake voters from other states who would then be paid to inflate the votes for the party’s governorship. The commission had announced the suspension of the questionable exercise after a meeting it held in Abuja last Friday with the leadership of various political parties as well as stakeholders.

Mr. Anenih has told associates that he intends to teach incumbent Governor Adams Oshiomhole a lesson for distancing himself from the PDP “chieftain.” According to one source, Mr. Anenih believes he greatly helped Oshiomhole to assume the governorship as a way of punishing former Governor Osunbor, whose removal was ordered by a panel of the Court of Appeal.

An aide to Governor Oshiomhole, the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), said his party was not surprised that the PDP would be plotting to rig the election. “Chief Tony Anenih has never won anything in his life without rigging,” the source said, adding that “Chief Anenih will be in for a shock if he thinks the ACN and the people of Edo will sit idly by and allow him to thwart the will of the people of Edo State.”

Those who know their history and are balanced will know the PDP does not stand a chance hence the desperation of Anenih. If you genuinely wish Edo folks well then you will admit what is terribly obvious to everyone.

FEUDING Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elders, including the former chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Tony Anenih; former governor, Dr Samuel Ogbemudia and Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, have resolved their differences and set to work together to ensure the success of the PDP in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The three elder statemen were among the party elders from the state, who met behind closed doors with President Goodluck Jonathan at House 7, Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Sunday night.

A source close to the meeting revealed on Monday that the three frontline members of the PDP in the state decided to put their differences behind them before the meeting.

It was learnt that they agreed on the necessity to work together, in view of the perceived wrongdoing of Governor Adams Oshiomhole, especially his lack of respect for the elders in the state.

“The man has no decorum, he does not respect anybody. As we speak now, he is not on talking terms with Igbinedion; he abuses Chief Anenih everywhere, Ogbemudia is not anybody to him. Who does he respect? All our political icons, there is none that he respects,” the source said.

President Jonathan, who was relieved to learn that the crisis had been resolved, was said to have proceeded to voice his concern over the growing insecurity in Edo State and stressed the need to tackle the problem.

As a demonstration of their new found unity, the party elders went to the Abuja residence of Chief Anenih at the end of the meeting, where they worked on strategy for the way forward.

Meanwhile, the state chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has challenged the governorship candidate of the PDP, General Charles Airhiavbere (retd) and national leader of the party, Chief Anenih, to public debate, to discuss development-based issues ahead of the July 14 gubernatorial election in the state.

The Edo ACN said while its candidate, Governor Oshiomhole, was ready to take on Airhiavbere, Chief Anenih should come out and face ACN national leader in the state and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Tom Ikimi.

The ACN threw the challenge during the re-election campaign rally of Governor Oshiomhole, on Monday, at Irrua, in Esan Central Local Government Area of the state, where Oshiomhole said he was going to shock the people with more developmental projects if given a second term mandate as governor.

Governor Oshiomhole also told the people that the PDP had been creating what he described as a dynasty of the poor by dismantling the social ladder, just as he said his ACN-led administration had a positive story to tell in the area of developing the state
