The 1962 Act of Parliament that established the university clearly states:

“as from the appointed day the university established by the UNILAG Act 1962 shall be a body corporate by the name of the University of Lagos…”

I, therefore, condemn the most undemocratic and military-like/inspired approach the President has gone about his not-well-intentioned honour of Chief M.K.O. Abiola.

UNILAG is a corporation . . . .and corporations are able to change names!

And acts of parliament can be amended at any time - without the consent of University officials.

'can be amendd @ anytime', by who? By the President? Is the President now the parliament?
Why is this President (GEJ) always saying, 'I have done this and there is no going back'?

Your view is so WRONG, Corporations are nothing but an entity. Every entity such as Corps whether Private, Public or Govt have what is called the "Articles of Corporation" or whatever supporting rule book where bylaws are established therein. Corporations in general may or may not have a right to change their names, however, if they do, but NOT without the consultation, deliberation and approval of the Board. Even before such actions are taken, there are surveyed opinions of "STAKEHOLDERS" which include direct, indirect, and/or third parties which may include employees, vendors, banks, suppliers, creditors, debtors, and the list goes on.

Acts of Parliament can be amended at anytime, TRUE or maybe NOT but if it were to be amended, amended by who exactly? President Goodluck? Is he now the Parliament? In that case, NASS is irrelevant, right? In civilized societies, they seek expert opinion that is why they have hearings. Before such amendment is made, they have a referendum, they seek the people's opinion before embarking on such mission. This is an activity where millions of people are stakeholders and you have to weight the risk associated with backlash from these stakeholders. This is one of those times I expect NASS to act and veto his authority.
