I c dis on-ongoin protest by d students of MAULAG(formerly unilag) as a childish act.Just cos d name of ur institutn doesnt sound tushed or sweet anymore,ur embarkin on a protest.Does d name change affect d content of d institutn:does it affect d fact dat d facilities in d institutn r over-stretched;does it affect d fact dat u stil gat saddist as ur lecturers;does it affect d fact dat there's a fallen standard n deplorable conditn of d hostels? All dese exist in d institutn n u neva protested but 2 a trivial change of name.Besides,wu owns d institutn?wu determines wot name it's being called? The name "MAU" has come to stay whether we like it or not. If Akokites like, let them Gather 100,000 signatures for the protest, there's no going back to what GEJ has said. It's like u guys are yet to understand this govt.

Odunnu: One other leadership attribute attributed to GEJ- Accessible. I guess thats why people run their mouth. They've taken this positive attribute for granted

So the words of a government flunky should be taken as gospel truth now abi? LMAO!

I think the word most Nigerians would prefer to use (for good reason) is 'clueless'.

Afterall, OAU was established and built by Obafemi Awolowo led Action Group, Ahmadu bello university was built by NPC led by Ahmadu Bello. I knowAbiola didn't build the school, or built any structure in it. If he truly wanted to honor him, he should hav named a national monument that all Nigerians identify with. Not playing politics with his name.

We will see about that. When he says he is allocating 2 billion naira to change the name, then you will join the protests.

I beg to differ.

One other "un-leadership" attribute of GEJ - Insensitivity.
Taking a cue from the subsidy removal and this MAULAG of a thing.

He doesnt say what the people wanna hear. Its like he doesnt even know what Nigerians are passing through. Talking about a big lacuna between the masses and his government. These protests are enough evidences to back my claims.

Beaf:

You people hate hearing the truth, thats the real problem, bro.
The name has been changed in the same way other name changes have been carried out. Bear in mind that it was the regulator of universities speaking and reeling out examples.
When I argued that the so-called unilag act had little bearing on the change to MAULAG (being long since superceded by a raft of new laws), many argued otherwise; well, here is the regulator basically telling you what I said.

@Odunnu
Long time no see, how ya side?

But when the military changed the name of Ife, it was publicly known beforehand and was debated and mostly rejected, yet it was renamed.

what is even more astonishing is that the Military Govt of the day promulgated a decree to change the name before announcing it

considering that it was a military govt and that they ruled by Fiat, its very very surprising that your president put the cart before the horse and you bootlickers are now trying to justify it simply because the cart and the horse belong together anyway!!!

Does that mean that even a soldier understands due process better than an ijaw man?

soapdish: Okojie is a bloody sycophant.

You shouldn't be surprised, the type of so-called intellectuals in Nigeria these days gives one concern.

A supposed PHD holder is ruling this country, yet there is more chaos than when a bloody khaki man with little or no education did.

A man who claims to have been in the system for so long and seen many instances of renaming schools does not know that the legal backing and wide consultation with stake-holders ought to have been done before announcing such a change. if that is what intellect/experience gives you in the Nigerian Govt then this country stands little or no chance.

The country is so volatile now and so many people have tangible reasons to flare up whenever the govt makes irrational decisions as they will always do apparently. i fear for this country. its so clear to see now that slowly but surely its getting closer to combustion. and the foolish citizens still think that ruling like a military overlord is right, unfortunately

There is nothing wrong in renaming the school. People are hiding under the "president did not follow the due course" rail while hiding the fact that that they are merely allowing pride to over shadow them " Imagine having a sexy name changed?)

As far as am concerned, there are so many things the students can protest for; But this is not one of them.

I read a post where some of the students were saying they fought to enter the school because of the name!! Ehhh?? So not to gather acedemic and relevant experience that will help form your life afterwards/ Will you be a student forever!!!

Other school of thought admit that MKO deserves honor but the president should have started with a national embodiment like the national stadium Abuja. Nice one. But is a anything wrong in naming UNILAG after MKO and then finding another thing (be it in Abuja or elsewhere) to name after him?
Re: NUC Will Effect UNILAG/MAU Name Change by jenti: 4:52pm On Jun 01, 2012
Okojie need not defend the President.
The questions are
When was this name changing committe set up?
Who are d members?
Was ther any public hearing?
What options did they come up with?
Were stakeholders consulted and if the do, when and where?
This man- Okojie had suddenly become GEJs spokesman ? Shameful

It was the same thing in Yola some months back but with time people will get used to it.

Goodluck Renames Yola Varsity After Islamic Scholar

The Federal University of Technology Yola (FUTY) has finally been
renamed Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH), with effect
from 1st October, 2011. The renaming which was greeted with protests from various groups in
the state was approved by President Goodluck Jonathan as fulfillment
of part of his campaign promises when he came to the state to canvass
for votes. Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Usman Bashir, told
journalists that the gesture was in line with the
tradition of immortalizing important personalities and historians of
great repute adding that Modibbo Adama Ibn Hassan was a great Islamic
scholar and the founder of the Fombina Kingdom, now Adamawa Emirate
Council.

“When the President came for campaign before the elections, Lamido
requested for the change of name so he was asked to write a letter
which he did and it was approved; so it did not start from the bottom
but from the top and we are carrying out the directive of Mr.
President.” Bashir stated. On the controversies and protest the change had generated in the
state, Bashir argued that “I don’t think it is out of place for the
Federal Government to want to change an institution’s name after all
the university belongs to it.”

He however admitted that the cost of changing the name is enormous,
adding that “we will have to change our letter heads, academic gowns,
logo and so many things; it’s a lot of money so we are staggering it,
its going to be in stages.”

THE VIEWER recalls that the move to rename FUTY to MAUTECH Yola did
not go down well with the institution’s chapter of Academic Staff
Union of University on the grounds that due process was not followed.
Chairman of ASUU FUTY branch, Dr. Daniel Dahiru alongside other
executive members had based their argument on the premise that the
university is an autonomous institution and as such any such change
should emanate from the school up to the presidency and not the other
way round. The group had claimed that congress unanimously moved against the new
name of the university, stating that the institution was established
as an Act of Parliament and held that the presidency could not
single-handedly approve a new name for the school without following
due process.

Former governor of the defunct Gongola state, Ambassador Wilberforce
Juta on his part argued that the late Lamido was already honoured by naming the entire state after him,
pointing out that there were majority tribes more populated than the
Fulanis but their heroes were not so honoured.
He argued that even the Jihadist Othman Danfodio who led the Jihad to
the entire country was not so honoured in his Sokoto origin by naming
the entire state to him, noting that the change of the university’s
name will amount to Islamizing the state that has Christian and Moslem
in equal proportion.

The former governor argued further saying “there are also late
Christian leaders in the state sleeping in their graves without being
immortalized but had contributed greatly to the development of the
state, as such this move is unacceptable.” END
