Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a lawyer, economist, and lawyer, was legendary in Africa for his unassailable exploits in education.

The establishment of mandatory FREE education in the Western Region of Nigeria laid the solid foundation of development in that part of the country.

Naming former University of Ife after him was a no-brainer as most of the school's Professors, and a whole generation in that part of the country (and other non-Yoruba residents) traced their successes to Chief Awolowo's legacy in education.

Chief Moshood Abiola, accountant, publisher and businessman, was legendary the world over as a seducer of women and philanderer. The female anatomy attracted him, enchanted him, mesmerized him and ensnared him. He lacked an education development pedigree, except for pretense, to put young, poor and innocent girls in the family way.

A female hostel, in line with his prowess and exploits among women, should have been built and named after him. Chief Abiola looooooooooved women. It would have been a fitting honor. From poor unlearned girls/women to PhD holders, Chief Abiola had them all.

Chief Abiola's other exploits, is sports, and in the last phase of his life, was politics. The recognition should have been in those areas, not education, but GEJ is obviously too insecure to recognize Chief Abiola politically.

So for those saying, "Why should a university be named after Awolowo and not Abiola?", this is my opinion. Let's hear yours.

OK, a bit of sarcasm, but women was his passion every waking moment. Sports, chieftancy titles, etc, came after that cheesy

The point of the post is that naming an established academic institution after a man who was renowned for other aspects of life flies in the face of common sense.

The most lingering legacy of Cheif Abiola was what he died for - But politics no gree GEJ do the right tin.

If GEJ desperately wanted Chief Abiola's name in Unilag, he should have built a female hostel and named it after him.

^^^Well, NL'ders brought up the comparison saying why the hue and cry about Unilag when Univ. of Ife was changed without drama.

GEJ, by renaming Unilag after MKO, attempts to equate both men.

In my opinion, Awo was and remains light years ahead of MKO

i heard he had wives/kids from every tribe in nigeria, and even in america, ie he married one or more american women?

where are these kids and wives presently? Do they have family reunions?

just curious.

i also heard he had a very luxurious private jet which many people were dazzled by- its interior was so plush.

Letter of appreciation from MKO Abiola’s family to President Jonathan!

Your Excellency, We wish to publicly offer our profound appreciation for your unprecedented recognition of the late Chief MKO Abiola, the ideals he lived by and the noble cause he died for. As you honoured him, we honour you. We have watched in dismay and bafflement, the futile efforts of previous governments to bury the uncommon heroism of MKO Abiola.

While looking ahead to your plans to shepherd this nation, you looked behind to acknowledge those you paved the path you now tread. Many sing by rote, the words “the labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain” while you embody that principle. Your labour over our country will never be in vain, by the grace of the Almighty Allah.

As our leader, you chose the time and manner that you would honour this great Nigerian. It was without our input but with our full approval. His sacrifices and contributions across every sphere of public life are too numerous to list. There has never been a philanthropist on the scale of MKO Abiola in the history of Nigeria. His oft-repeated life’s ambition was to touch the life of every Nigerian one way or another.

He may have succeeded in the area of education alone. In March 1990, he donated N1m (equivalent of N40 million in 2010) to each State University, N50,000 (N2 million in 2010) to each Federal University for student welfare, N20,000 (N800,000 in 2010) to the libraries of each Federal University and N25,000 (N1 million in 2010) to each Polytechnic and College of Education. He is credited with the construction of 63 secondary schools and 41 libraries. He established Abiola Bookshops to provide affordable, locally produced textbooks in the 1980s when imported textbooks became out of the reach of ordinary Nigerians when the Naira was devalued.

He awarded over 1,000 scholarships to deserving students in tertiary institutions at home and abroad. In addition those awarded by the Federal Government, MKO Abiola awarded bursaries to every single student from Ogun State. For every N500 they received from the Federal government, they received N250 from MKO Abiola. To delve into his contributions in sports, culture and welfare would turn this letter into a thesis. In politics as in philanthropy, he is unequalled. He broke tribal and religious barriers to a clear victory.

He chose the path of valour and fought for the collective will of Nigerians from the four corners of this nation and everywhere in between. He willingly returned from exile, knowing the consequences of that action, prepared to pay with his life. The circumstances of his death shook the polity to its foundations and established the democracy we enjoy today, by far the longest period of rule by the people in our history.

He lost his wife, the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, his businesses were decimated yet he voluntarily stayed in detention, rejecting conditional release. He died refusing to betray the mandate given to him by those who betray his memory today. No honour is too great for one of the men and women who laid down their lives for the democracy we enjoy today, that enables some to take to the streets, uttering irresponsible, abhorrent nonsense.

We take a leaf from your book and illustrate the line “help our youth the truth to know”. The government of Egypt named a school after him in appreciation of his contribution after a devastating earthquake. Egyptians did not take to the street yet to their eternal shame, some people in Lagos did. But as the great man would say, as one is crying one should still see. The machinations and motives of those sponsoring the protests are obvious.

If thirteen years of deafening silence from the Federal Government built on the blood of this man could not diminish his legacy, the actions of a few hooligans and rascals with no sense of history will certainly not. All glory and honour reside in the hands of the Almighty Allah, a righteous judge.

MKO Abiola will not be denied. We now turn to those groups who feel that their positions have been threatened by an unprecedented act of grace by Your Excellency and urge them to desist. The general elections are three years away. There is no need for blind panic or for using MKO Abiola’s name and the larger issue of June 12th to score cheap political points against the ruling party. We urge them to focus on the task of national and regional development. We assure you of our support of any decision you take in this matter. We had no expectation of your gracious gesture and neither did MKO Abiola.

He was driven by his love for Nigeria, not by the anticipation of honours. The few words you spoke provided justice and peace. No “masthead” can ever do that. We are satisfied and we are appreciative. You have acted as one who fears God and seeks to lead in justice and truth according to His will. In the final analysis and in view of the fickleness and short memory of some “students”, that is all that matters.

We conclude with the assurance that your honouree would not be disturbed by this furore were he alive to witness it. When we would tell him we don’t like his nickname of Father Christmas and ask him why he gives so much, he would say that he is not doing it for the people but for Allah and that if he helps a thousand people and only one remembers that’s enough for him. It is enough for us too as is the certain fact that in due course, each of us will go where MKO Abiola has gone and leave children behind.

With profound gratitude,

Alhaji (Chief) Mubashiru Abiola

Chief (Mrs) Adebisi Abiola

Chief (Mrs.) Omolola Abiola – Edewor

Alhaji Olalekan Abiola

@Tpia

You heard? Really? I thought MKO's exploits with women are well-documented cheesy

If this was the US, books, movies and documentaries generating jobs and millions of $$ of wealth would have been made about MKO's philandering ways.

I was in high school with 3 of his kids (all from the same uneducated Mom). Their Mom used to be the 17-year old house-girl of one of his wives; and Baba put her in the family way. Three other kids followed.

From those Abiola kids, my ears were filled with escapades after escapades about their Dad. . .And the kids were (well-behaved) girls o.

MKO's obsession was really beyond s-e-x; it was procreation. He fervently believed (IMHO) that God put him on this earth to father as many children as possible. Until a woman has a child for him, she was a none entity.

Once the baby comes - No DNA necessary as they MUST have his massive nose and tobacco-leaf-like ears - the woman gets a house and a certain amount of money (I used to know it) deposited in trust for the child.

The kids say that as many as they were at that time, MKO never forgot his kids' birthday. He would call or visit on that day.

It appeared that the women he didn't get intimate with were the women he did not approach - He was reputed to have a 100% hit rate cheesy

Don't mind those shameless kids. They had an absentee father, who was busy dispersing his wild oats, and lacked proper upbringing. Even in Abacha/Abdulsalam's time, Kola Abiola (the eldest son) was busy flirting with the government collecting contracts - The same establishment that killed his Dad and Mom.

They should be pitied.

In the UK, Abiola earned a First Class in Accountancy. His kids are PhDs in Sycophancy.

Unfortunately we don't keep records. There's a video clip I'd love to have. There was an event in the early 1990's at which MKO was the guest of honour. It was shown on LTV. He spoke extensively about his life.

He pointed to a gentleman in the audience. The man was his classmate @ Abeokuta. MKO would borrow the man's textbooks (he was too poor to buy books) and read overnight or at weekends, yet he would get a higher grade than the man.

I think Sir Shina Peters was on the bandstand. MKO performed with him (remember that MKO was a musician and band leader).

I wish I had the tape of that event.

i hope the bolded above has helped in enlightening ignorant people like CANUCK & co. How many ladies did OBJ, Fela, Ojukwu marry? Nigerian culture and tradition allows polygamy. Even average westerners get married more than once in their lifetime so what's the big deal about Abiola's case. His personal and intimate life is of no concern to anybody so i don't see any reason why canuck seems to be obsessed with that aspect of his life.

By extension, we should get ready for the following changes:

University of Ibadan Otunba Balogun University
University of Port Harcourt Dantata University
University of Benin Dangote University
University of Abuja Folawiyo University & co?

All those who have given bursaries to students and grants to universities deserve to have Federal Universities named after them?!? That's warped.

BTW, if any of the bursary recipient is a lady, and MKO came in contact with her, he will phuck her! Na craze?!

E no take my wife/GF o! Thank God that by the time I entered the market, it was game-over for him cheesy

But don't jump around in your logic - You said he deserved having his name replace Unilag because he gave bursaries and grants, and I just gave you a very shortlist of people who did, and are still doing the same. Should Nigerian universities be named after donors?

His non-discriminatory policy on screwing and obsession with fathering as many children as possible are merely a sideshow in this matter that does not disqualify his being honored - The wrong institution was chosen to honor him. That's the point of the post.

And where did i say unilag deserves to be named after Abiola? You were comparing him and Awolowo with regards to their contribution to education and you made it appear that Abiola didn't contribute anything to education, that was what i tried correcting. I attended UNILAG from nursery school all the way to Postgraduate level (all my education has been at unilag) and im not bothered if its name is changed or not.

Once the baby comes - No DNA necessary as they MUST have his massive nose and tobacco-leaf-like ears - the woman gets a house and a certain amount of money (I used to know it) deposited in trust for the child.

i was told having a child for him would result in an automatic N1 million in your account. For starters. Then houses, cars, personal staff, etc would follow. I was told of university graduates whose sole ambition after graduation was to have a child for abiola. True story.

as many as they were at that time, MKO never forgot his kids' birthday. He would call or visit on that day.

i would gladly take a job as his secretary for kid's affairs, or kid's birthdays. Sole responsibility being to remind him of upcoming children's birthdays.

i heard his staff were well paid, so what the heck.
