The resident association of Lekki phase 1 have banned the plying of commercial motorbikes along estate roads. This has caused a reaction among visitors and workers who now have to trek long distances to get to their destinations as the shuttle buses available cannot meet the needs of the people who work there. This morning, even delivery motorcycles owned by courier services were not allowed into the Lekki peninsula estate. The reason given for the ban is the alleged involvement of Okada riders in criminal activities and exceeding speed limits. Several announcement were made prior to the ban, stating that the Okada riders should stay clear of the estate indefinitely. Some of the Okada riders interviewed complained bitterly about the unfair decision of the association to ban them from the estate as they rely on the meagre earnings to survive. A man (name withheld) disclosed to us that he believes some money issue was involved. According to him, a sum of N35,000 was paid by each Okada rider for the acquisition of a reflector jacket with an identification number. For those who couldn't afford such sum, there was a rental service by some men who rented it to the Okada rider for a sum of N10,000. However, how the money exchanges hands is questionable and has aroused many questions. Is the money going to the Okada association or resident association? We also hear that the Lekki Phase 1 residents association claims the plying of motorcycles in the estate cheapens the value of the estate!
