Nigerian plane crashes in Ghana
The heavy rain of Saturday evening which wreaked havoc in many cities in the country was believed to have played a major role in the crash of the Boeing 727 cargo plane belonging to Allied Air (Nigerian company), while attempting to land at the Kotoka International Airport, Accra, Ghana.
The airplane, according to the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr Harold Demuren was commanded by a Nigerian, Capt Afegbua, with other three people onboard.

The NCAA boss said the heavy rain might have flooded the runway thus making it slippery, a development that led to overshooting of the runway. He said the three-engine jet, after it over shot the runway, rammed into the airport fence and smashing an Instrument Landing System (ILS) on its path. As its momentum reduced, the aircraft eventually rammed into a bus loaded with passengers on a nearby street, killing all 10 people inside the vehicle.

“It’s an unfortunate development. The B727 was carrying cargo for DHL to be delivered in Accra. It rained heavily in Lagos. It got to Ijebu in Ogun State, Oyo state too. It also got to Accra. It was heavy and the pilot over shot the runway. I’m rushing to Accra right now to commiserate with my colleagues there. It’s painful that about 10 people died. Capt Afegbua is an experienced pilot but it has happened. Ghana authorities have been in contact with us on the investigation”, he said.

According to the dictates of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a crash is investigated by authorities in the country of occurrence while the country where the aircraft is registered will assist by providing all necessary information.

Demuren further told Daily Sun that officials of Nigeria’s Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) expected to be in Accra as quickly as possible to assist in the investigations which aim to unearth the real cause of the crash. Part of what the investigators will peruse are the aircraft’s papers and maintenance schedule; while insurers will also work modalities for payment of compensation.

The Chief Executive Officer of Allied Air, Capt Val Tongo did not take telephone calls, apparently as a result of the crash and the attendant shock. The four-man crew of airplane reportedly sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital in Accra for emergency medical attention. The crash, Daily Sun further learnt, occurred in Accra near Kotoka International Airport, which sits near newly built high-rise buildings and hotels.
