The chairman of the House of Representatives Adhoc
committee on fuel subsidy, Farouk Lawan (PDP Kano) has
been detained by the Nigeria police over $3 million bribe for
clearance allegation levelled against him.

The lawmaker was accused of collecting an installment of
$620,000 bribe from a Billionaire Business man, Femi Otedola
to absolve his companies from any wrongdoing in their report.

Mr Otedola’s oil company, Zenon oil was actually exonerated
in the report submitted and adopted by the house on April 14,
2012.

Trouble started for Lawan when Mr Otedola said in interview
that he gave the lawmaker $620,000 but explained it was a
marked money from the state security service, SSS.

The businessman said he reported the Lawmaker to the
security after insisting that he must play ball in order to clear
his companies.

Farouk Lawan who has refused to honor police’s invitation
since this scandal broke out, walked into the police net
yesterday and was grilled for several hours and detained
thereafter.

African Examiner gathered that the police are still unable to
recover the marked money from lawmaker.

Meanwhile, the house will this morning meet at an emergency
session to take a position on the incident, in which some
members believe has brought a shame to the lower house.

Our correspondent reports that some of the decisions that the
house might take today include: To suspend Lawan Farouk,
stand by the report of the committee and to exonerate the
house leadership from the scandal.

The plenary session is slated for 10.00 am Nigerian time.

Farouk is one the highest ranking members in the House of
Representatives. He has been in the house since 1999 and
championed many anti-corruption movements, some which
have landed him in juicy standing and ad-hoc committee’s
chairmanship such as this scandalous House of
Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on the Monitoring of the
Subsidy Regime.
