Hey guys, do you still remember your favorite poetry recitations while growing up? Share with us if you do, however long, short, or funny it may be. Don't be shy. Here is one of mine; AN ELEGY ON THE DEATH OF A MAD DOG. Good people all of every sort, Give ear unto my song; And if you find it wondrous short, It cannot hold you long. In Islington, there was a man, Of whom the world might say; That still a godly race he ran, Whene'er he went to pray. A kind and gentle heart he had, To comfort friends and foes, The n.aked everyday he clad, When he puts on his clothes. And in that town a dog was found, As many dogs there be, Both mongrel, puppy, whelp and hound, And curs of low degree. This dog and man at first were friends; But when a pique began, The dog, to gain some private ends, Went mad and bit the man. Around from all the neighbouring streets, The wondering neighbours ran, And swore the dog has lost its wits, To bite so good a man. The wound it seemed both sore and sad, To every christian eye; And while they swore the dog was mad, They swore the man would die. But soon, a wonder came to light, That showed the rogues they lied; The man recovered of the bite, ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- The dog it was that died! I suspect that I'll be back with more, but c'mon let's see yours too.. 1 Like |

I know a funny little man, as quiet as a mouse Who does the mischief that is done in everybody's house There's no one ever sees his face And yet we all agree That every plate we break was cracked By Mr. Nobody 'Tis he who always tears our books Who leaves our doors ajar He pulls the buttons from our shirts, And scatters pins afar, That squeaking door will always squeak, Because of this you see, We leave the oiling to be done, By Mr. Nobody. He puts damp wood upon the fire, So kettles cannot boil; His, are the feet that bring in mud, And all the carpets soil, The papers always are mislaid, Who had them last but he? There's no one tosses them about But Mr. Nobody. 3 Likes |

THE GLUTTON'S PRAYER. Now I sit down here to eat I know my hunger pangs will meet This pound of bacon sure looks small If it were twice that much, I'd eat it all But there's four eggs fried with sausage links A bowl of grits and juice to drink Hash browned potatoes on the side I wish I had two more eggs fried.... Though not as good as last night's meal I thank you Lord, that was a Deal The ribs I had, seamed just enough Though the second slab was tough The beans were bold and kind of spicy But the second bowl, I handled nicely The coleslaw they served me tasted sweet It really went well with the meat Smoked chicken too, came with the meal To my taste bud, it did appeal I cleaned my plate down to the bones Desert, I almost had to take home If I can get up from this chair And walk to the lounger over there I'll take my drink and bag of snacks In case my hunger pangs come back So Lord, I thank you for this time To enjoy the life, my food and wine And pray that you will guide my feet When it again comes time to eat. 1 Like |

Have you ever seen a tortoise, Crawlin' slowly on its way? Slowly creepin', Slowly crawlin', Fifty yards in half a day! Why so slowly- Oh! So slowly, Does it creep from place to place? With that very- Oh! So very, Tired look upon its face! It is not because its lazy, Or because its old and slow; If YOU were carrying a house, How quickly would YOU go? |

My teacher taught me that once upon a time, I think I'll tell you all this in a rhyme. People didn't understand a thing about the land... For instance they believed that Atmos the strong, held the world upon his shoulders for ever so long... And another thing that people thought was really very silly: was that the earth was flat and square--although a little hilly... And if you walked and walked and walked and couldn't help but reach the edge; but if you did beware -they said- , you better hold on to ledge; or you'll fall and fall forever and never come back to earth- no, never! And if you were lucky were this to occur, what a close shave! For he almost went over! So like that -they said- a stone went tumbling down... And it hit poor Atmos toe-- before it touched the ground. And the mountains began to heave and mutter and that's how the earth became covered with flood, when all you could hear was a splutter... This continued on for another age or two. And then a coconut dropped-- completely out of the blue... What do you think, it dropped with a clink! As stars sprangled to view. . . (Now I have a headache, and the poem isn't finished!) . . . Never knew that time went on, but people learnt how to get on-- little by little with sciences and such; acheiving all these gave no small luck. For example, one beautiful sunny fine day-- a man went around on a beautiful carpet-- a magic one; when lo and behold! He looked down and suddenly knew that the earth was round! He couldn't believe it-- he told himself with glee... So down he flew for a look to see. He came down and was so far tired out to look, so he set himself down to a tree's shady nook. By the time he awoke, the shade was quite gone-- twas a terrible bother. So off he went to the other side, and when that didn't work; he was left to be tied. So he gave up the snooze and started to prance. . A little while later when he sat himself down, by some old Roman ruins that lay on the ground. He watched a bee fly around and around... He already knew that the earth wasn't flat. He supposed it went round the sun--just like that! And that's how he knew that the stars and things, circled the sun in perfect rings! That's what makes the seasons and all: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. The wind, the rain, the hail and snow, It makes birds hasty to get on the go! The Northward winds are cold and biting, The Southward winds are warm and inviting So down they fly in perfect order, With the currents they glide, south of the border. It warmer in the southern south you know, And that's where bananas and palm trees grow... Moments of flight a couple weeks later, Met plenty of lions and alligators... Oh! He's gone too far south! He better not land in a cannabals mouth... (Smack!) Saved by the bell, I guess I was dreaming. I'm sorry professor please don't look so fuming. I've gone over my lessons and dreamt about stars, The sun, moon, and the planet mars! Damn... I guess that ends my daydream in classes, I guess after all, he can see through his glasses! What is he mumbling? What's it about? I'm still in a daze, and i can't make it out. Cos by listening in class I feel when I grow up I can change a great deal! I'll be an explorer and take a long trip Way up to the moon in a golden spaceship! And I will take my professor, father and mother... Although I forgot that I was a bother.... The end. 1 Like |
