The Lady maliciously mum on Myanmar Muslim cleansing: Analyst

A prominent political analyst says that Myanmar President’s proposal to expel Rohingya Muslims from the country is an “ethnic cleansing” and the country’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate is “criminally silent” about it.

“This is ethnic cleansing…. the government and even this Nobel prize winner, the lady [Aung San Suu Kyi] is so criminally silent about the problems of this minority in Myanmar,” Professor Ghulam Taqi Bangash at the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) told Press TV.

The remarks come after Myanmar’s President Thein Sein said that Rohingya Muslims must be expelled from the country and sent to refugee camps run by the United Nations.

The government refuses to recognize nearly-one-million-strong Rohingya Muslims community, which the UN calls one of the world’s most prosecuted people.

Myanmar claims the Rohingya are not native and classify them as illegal migrants although they have lived in the country for generations.

Myanmar’s opposition and National League for Democracy party (NLD) leader Aung Suu Kyi was elected to parliament after she was released from house arrest earlier this year.
However, many people are disappointed at the way she has been avoiding the issue.

Last Month at a press conference in Geneva, Suu Kyi said she 'didn't know' if Rohingya Muslims were Myanmar's citizens.

Bangash said Washington is also criminally silent over the issue as the US tries to coax the countries in the Southeast Asia region to stop them from having better relations with the People’s Republic of China.

“Southeast Asia is becoming much more inconspicuous on the economic map for the United States of America,” he added.

“They should rather strengthen the sanctions against Myanmar until this problem should be solved but they are not doing that,” Bangash added.

Myanmar's current government is run by military figures, which have been accused of rights abuse.

Over a dozen Muslims were killed on June 3 when a mob of ethnic Rakhines, who are mostly Buddhist, attacked a passenger bus in the Rakhine state in the west of the country that borders Bangladesh.

Over the past two years, throngs of ethnic Muslims have attempted to flee by boats in the face of systematic oppression by the government.

5.6-magnitude quake hits Myanmar-India border

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale has struck the India-Myanmar border region, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit at 1:25 a.m. local time on Sunday (1955 GMT on Saturday) at a depth of 6.5 kilometers (4 miles).

The tremor struck 43 kilometers (26 miles) southeast of Kohima, the capital of India's northeastern state of Nagaland, and was at 25.437 degrees north latitude and 94.496 degrees east longitude.

India's seven northeastern states -- joined to the rest of the country by a narrow sliver of land -- are located in an area of frequent seismic activities.

More than 100 people were killed in September last year when a powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the border of India's northeastern state of Sikkim and Nepal, according to AFP.

The quake devastated towns and villages on both sides of the Indian and Nepal border, as well as in southern Tibet and the tiny kingdom of Bhutan.

An emotional Rohingya Muslim woman, fleeing violence in Myanmar

Mon Jul 16, 2012 1:15PM GMT

By Ramzy Baroud

The widespread killings of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar - have received only passing and dispassionate coverage in most media. What they actually warrant is widespread outrage and decisive efforts to bring further human rights abuses to an immediate halt.

“Burmese helicopter set fire to three boats carrying nearly 50 Muslim Rohingyas fleeing sectarian violence in western Burma in an attack that is believed to have killed everyone on board,” reported Radio Free Europe on July 12.

Why would anyone take such fatal risks? Refugees are attempting to escape imminent death, torture or arrest at the hands of the Ethnic Buddhist Rakhine majority, which has the full support of the Myanmar government.

The relatively little media interest in Myanmar’s ‘ethnic clashes’ is by no means an indication of the significance of the story. The recent flaring of violence followed the raping and killing of a Rhakine woman on May 28, allegedly by three Rohingya men. The incident ushered a rare movement of unity between many sectors of Myanmar society, including the government, security forces and so-called pro-democracy activists and groups. The first order of business was the beating to death of ten innocent Muslims. The victims, who were dragged out of a bus and attacked by a mob of 300 strong Buddhist Rhakine, were not even Rohingyas, according to the Bangkok Post(June 22). Not all Muslims in Myanmar are from the Rohingya ethnic group. Some are descendants of Indian immigrants, some have Chinese ancestry, and some even have early Arab and Persian origins. Myanmar is a country with a population of an estimated 60 million, only 4 percent of whom are Muslim.

Regardless of numbers, the abuses are widespread and rioters are facing little or no repercussions for their actions. “The Rohingyas…face some of the worst discrimination in the world,” reported Reuters on July 4, citing rights groups. UK-based Equal Rights Trust indicated that the recent violence is not merely due to ethnic clashes, but actually involves active government participation. “From June 16 onwards, the military became more actively involved in committing acts of violence and other human rights abuses against the Rohingya including killings and mass-scale arrests of Rohingya men and boys in North Rakhine State.”

The ‘pro-democracy’ Myanmar’s groups and individuals celebrated by Western governments for objecting to the country’s military junta are also taking part in the war against minorities. Writing in the Sydney Morning Herald on July 8, Hanna Hindstrom reported that one pro-democracy group stated on Twitter that “[t]he so-called Rohingya are liars,” while another social media user said, “We must kill all the kalar.” Kalar is a racist slur applied to dark-skinned people from the Indian subcontinent

Politically, Myanmar has a poor reputation. A protracted civil war has ravaged the country shortly after its independence from Britain in 1948. The colonial era was exceptionally destructive as the country was used as a battleground for great powers. Many Myanmar people were slaughtered in a situation that was not of their making. As foreign powers divided the country according to their own purposes, an ensuing civil war was almost predictable. It supposedly ended when a military junta took over from 1962 to 2011, but many of the underlying problems remained unresolved.

Per western media coverage, Myanmar is defined by a few ‘iconic’ individuals’ quest for democracy, notwithstanding opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Since an election last year brought a civilian government to power, we have been led to believe that a happy ending is now in the making. “Burma opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi made her historic parliamentary debut on Monday (July 9), marking a new phase in her near quarter century struggle to bring democracy to her army-dominated homeland,” reported the British Telegraph.

But aside from mere ‘concerns’ over the ethnic violence, Aung San Suu Kyi is staying on the fence - as if the slaughter of the country’s ‘dark-skinned Indians’ is not as urgent as having a parliamentary representation for her party, the National League for Democracy in Myanmar. Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu called on ‘The Lady’ to do something, anything. “As a Nobel Peace Laureate, we are confident that the first step of your journey towards ensuring peace in the world would start from your own doorstep and that you would play a positive role in bringing an end to the violence that has afflicted Arakan State,” he wrote. However, “Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy continues to carefully sidestep the hot-button issue,” according to Foreign Policy.

The violent targeting of Burmese minorities arrived at an interesting time for the US and Britain. Their pro-democracy campaign was largely called off when the junta agreed to provide semi-democratic reforms. Eager to offset the near exclusive Chinese influence over the Myanmar economy, Western companies jumped into Myanmar as if one of the most oppressive regimes in the world was suddenly resurrected into an oasis for democracy.

“The gold rush for Burma has begun,” wrote Alex Spillius in the British Guardian. It was ushered in by US President Barak Obama’s recent lifting of the ban on American investment in the country. Britain immediately followed suit, as a UK trade office was hurriedly opened in Rangoon on July 11. “Its aim is to forge links with one of the last unexploited markets in Asia, a country blessed by ample resources of hydro-carbons, minerals, gems and timber, not to mention a cheap labour force, which thanks to years of isolation and sanctions is near virgin territory for foreign investors.” Since US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made her ‘historic’ visit to Myanmar in December 2011, a recurring media theme has been ‘Myanmar riches’ and the ‘race for Myanmar’. Little else is being discussed, and certainly not minority rights.

Recently, Clinton held a meeting with Myanmar’s President Thein Sein, who is now being branded as another success story for US diplomacy. On the agenda are US concerns regarding the “lack of transparency in Myanmar's investment environment and the military's role in the economy” (CNN, July 12). Thein Sein, however, is guilty of much greater sins, for he is providing a dangerous political discourse that could possibly lead to more killings, or even genocide. The ‘reformist’ president told the UN that “refugee camps or deportation is the solution for nearly a million Rohingya Muslims,” according to ABC Australia. He offered to send the Rohingyas away “if any third country would accept them.”

The Rohingyas are currently undergoing one of the most violent episodes of their history, and their suffering is one of the most pressing issues anywhere in the world. Yet their plight is suspiciously absent from regional and international priorities, or is undercut by giddiness over the country’s “ample resources of hydro-carbons, minerals, gems and timber.”

Meanwhile, the stateless and defenseless Rohingyas continue to suffer and die. Those lucky to make it to Bangladesh are being turned back. Aside from few courageous journalists - indifferent to the country’s promise for ‘democracy’ and other fables - most are simply looking the other way. This tragic attitude must immediately change if human rights matter in the least.

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has expressed deep concern over the massacre of Muslims in Myanmar, urging an end to violence in the southeastern Asian country.

“It is expected that the Myanmar government will prepare the ground for solidarity, national unity and [asserting the] rights of Muslims in the country and that it will avert violence and a human catastrophe in this regard,” Mehmanparast said on Monday.

He called for “swift and serious” measures by the Myanmar government, the international community and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to clarify the aspects of this incident and put an end to the violence.

The Iranian spokesperson emphasized that respect for the rights of the followers of different religions and preparing the ground for religious and ethnic minorities to enjoy their civil rights are principles accepted by all schools of thoughts.

According to recent reports, Muslims in Myanmar are in a disaster situation. Since June, hundreds of members of the nearly-one-million-strong Rohingya Muslim minority have been killed and tens of thousands of others among them have been displaced in the west of the country due to a wave of communal violence.

On June 3, 10 Rohingya Muslims were killed when a mob of an ethnic group, known as the Rakhines, who are mostly Buddhist, attacked a passenger bus in the western Myanmar Rakhine state that borders Bangladesh.

According to a group of UK-based NGOs, from June 10 to 28, 650 Rohingya Muslims were killed, 1,200 went missing, and more than 80,000 others were displaced as a result of rioting, arson, and a cycle of revenge attacks in the western state.

Over the past two years, waves of ethnic Muslims have attempted to flee by boats in the face of systematic oppression by the Myanmar government.

The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize them. They say the Rohingyas are not native and classify them as illegal migrants, although they have lived in Myanmar for generations.

Iranian lawmaker blasts UN silence on Myanmar violence

An Iranian lawmaker has denounced the UN silence on Myanmar’s violence against the Muslim community in the country.

Mohammad Ismaili, a member of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, on Friday also criticized international organizations for their silence on the Myanmar violence as “astonishing”.

Stressing that the UN has lost its “efficiency,” the Iranian lawmaker said the UN acted in accord with Western powers, in particular Israel and the US, and has been used as a tool by them.

“The organization, which claims to advocate rights of all people across the globe, takes stance based on interests,” he added.

Ismaili said the UN silence was not a new issue as the international body also failed to meet its obligations when it came to Gaza, Afghanistan and Iraq.

According to recent reports, Muslims in Myanmar are in a tragic human plight. Reports say 650 of the nearly one million Rohingya Muslims have been killed as of June 28 during clashes in the western region of Rakhine. This is while 1,200 others are missing and 80,000 more have been displaced.

The UN has described Rohingya Muslims as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world.

They are deprived of basic rights including education and employment and are subject to forced labor, extortion and other coercive measures.

The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize Rohingyas, who it claims are not natives and classifies them as illegal migrants, although they have lived in the country for generations.

Iran calls for int’l help to ease plight of Muslim Myanmarese

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has called on Muslim countries to take measures to end the plight of the Muslim minority in Myanmar.

“They (the Muslim Myanmarese) must have civil rights, therefore the Islamic Republic immediately adopted a stance and called on the Myanmar government to respect the rights of a number of its people who are Muslim,” Mehmanparast said.

The Iranian official made the remarks during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Mehmanparast said other countries should address the situation of the Muslims in Myanmar, adding that the Islamic community must support Muslim states.

Reports say 650 Rohingya Muslims were killed as of June 28 during clashes in the western region of Rakhine. This is while 1,200 others are missing and 80,000 more have been displaced.

The UN says decades of discrimination have left the Rohingyas stateless, with Myanmar implementing restrictions on their movement and withholding land rights, education and public services.

They are deprived of basic rights including education and employment and are subject to forced labor, extortion and other coercive measures.

The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize Rohingyas, who it claims are not natives, and classifies them as illegal migrants, although they have lived in the country for generations.

R.ape-Murder of a Buddhist girl by Muslims led to riots: Myanmar Ambassador

Myanmar: Rape and murder of Buddhist girl by Muslims led to riots, and "it is totally untrue that hundreds or thousands have been killed and that those killed were Muslims"
And then the Muslims claimed victimhood status. We have seen this so many times before. "Rape-Murder of a Buddhist girl by Muslims led to riots: Myanmar Ambassador," by Mumtaz Alam Falahi for TwoCircles.net, July 22 (thanks to Maxwell):

New Delhi: Amidst spreading anger among Muslims in India over the killings of Muslims in Myanmar, the Embassy of Myanmar in New Delhi has come up with first official and detailed explanation about the violent clashes, its origin and the measures the Government of Myanmar has adopted to control the situation and provide relief to the victims.
According to Myanmar Ambassador Zin Yaw, what has happened recently in the Rakhine State of Myanmar was violent clashes and riots between Buddhists and Muslims in the state – it was not one-sided killing of Muslims by another group with the support of the state. According to Yaw, only 79 persons comprising members of both communities have been killed in the riots that started on 30th May 2012. He termed the photos of mass killings of Muslims as fake and described the reports as baseless accusations. He further said that the violent clashes began after the rape and murder of a Buddhist girl by three Muslims in Rakhine State on 28th May.

The ambassador has made this clarification in reply to a letter by Dr Tasleem Ahmed Rahmani, President, Muslim Political Council of India. Mr. Rahmani had written to the ambassador on 19th July seeking appointment for a meeting of Muslim leaders with the ambassador over the reported killings of Muslims in Myanmar....

Main points of the letter of Myanmar ambassador
-- On 28 May this year, a Rakhine Buddhist girl was raped and killed by three Muslims in Kyaukpyu district of Rakhine State. The perpetrators were arrested and put in police custody.

-- On 30 May, 100 people including relatives of the girl and villagers came to the police station asking police to hand over the accused to them. Police refused and opened fire to disperse the mob.

-- On 3 June in a town called Taunggup, a group of about 300 Rakhine Buddhists attacked 10 Muslim passengers on a bus travelling to Yangon. All 10 were killed on the spot. This led to violent clashes between Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims. The situation went out of control.

-- Curfew was imposed by the State Government on 8 June 2012. However, clashes continued. State of Emergency was declared in Rakhine State by the Union Government on 10 June. Army was called in to control the situation. The situation is now back to normal completely.

--During the clashes, both Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims, 79 persons in total, were killed and many injured. It is totally untrue that hundreds or thousands have been killed and that those killed were Muslims. The deaths were caused by either group to each other, not by others. Houses and property worth millions of dollars were destroyed. Thousands of victims have become homeless.

-- The government formed on 6 June 2012 an Investigation Committee headed by the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs to investigate all aspects of the unfortunate incident and submit a report to the President.

-- 30 Rakhine Buddhist suspects have already been detained so far.

-- Relief camps, 72 in total, have been set up separately for Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims. Basic needs of food, clothing and medicines of the victims have been met by the government.

-- In coordination with the government, UN agencies in the country, including UNHCR, UNFPA, WFP and UNOCHA, and INGOs have also been providing humanitarian assistance to the victims.

--Lt. Gen. Thein Htay, Union Minister for Border Affairs and for Myanmar Industrial Development, accompanied by Mr. Vijay Nambiar, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, officials from UN agencies, 15 Muslim leaders from Yangon visited Rakhine State recently

Full text of the letter of Myanmar ambassador

Dear Dr. T.A. Rahmani,
I would like to provide you the following information:-

On what happened:
On 28 May this year, a Rakhine Buddhist girl was raped and killed by three men near one of the villages in Kyaukpyu district of Rakhine State, which is bordering Bangladesh.

Through the investigation conducted by Kyaukpyu district police force, three persons, all Muslims, were exposed to be the perpetrators. They were put under protective custody in Kyaukpyu Jail on the morning of 30 May for fear of revenge from relatives of the deceased girl.

Relatives of the deceased girl and fellow villagers, about 100, went to the police station on the afternoon of 30 May and asked the police station to bring to them the three suspects. The police officers, who are Buddhists, did not allow them to enter the station compound and rejected their claim by saying that action would be taken against the three suspects in accordance with the law. This testifies to respect for law and the rule of law in the country. Unsatisfied with the response from the police officers, the relatives and fellow villagers attempted to enter the police station which compelled the police officers to fire five shots to disperse them.

On 3 June in a town called Taunggup, a group of about 300 Rakhine Buddhists attacked 10 Muslim passengers on a bus travelling to Yangon. All 10 were killed on the spot. The news on killing of 10 Muslims spread to the immediate neighbourhood and Muslims and Rakhine Buddhists in the neighbourhood attacked each other. This communal violence spread quickly to other parts of Maungtaw and then to Buthidaung, Sittway and Yathedaung townships in the Rakhine State where Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims have been living since long. The situation went out of control....

During the unfortunate incident, both Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims, 79 persons in total, were killed and many injured. It is totally untrue that hundreds or thousands have been killed and that those killed were Muslims. The deaths were caused by either group to each other, not by others. Houses and property worth millions of dollars were destroyed. Thousands of victims have become homeless. Both Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims suffered as a result of the lawlessness of a few....

Comment of the Embassy:
The Embassy of Myanmar sincerely hopes that you be well aware that violent clashes take place sometimes not only between different religions but even between different sects of the same religion. Whenever such ugly things happen, not only those who start but also who have nothing to do with such things suffer. The Embassy firmly believes that regardless of what religion one professes, all must live together peacefully based on respect for each other and laws of the country in which we reside. The recent clashes between Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims in the Rakhine State of our country are very unfortunate and the Embassy feels very sorry for all the victims without any reservation.

In Myanmar, Muslims are not only in Rakhine State but also elsewhere as those who profess other religions in the country. Buddhist pagodas and monasteries, Christian churches, Islamic mosques and Hindu temples exist side by side in many cities/towns/localities of the country. This can happen because of the deeply rooted religious tolerance in the country.

Fake photos or false information have been spread with an ill intention to agitate Muslims around the world by attempting to create the impression that Muslims are being discriminated or killed in Myanmar and that such acts are state sponsored. Such are unsubstantiated accusations. Please do not be misled by them.

I would like to request you to kindly share this information with your colleagues.

I wish you and your colleagues all the best.

With warm regards

Zin Yaw

There are 2 sides to every story. Which is true? Which do you believe?

this has being reported earlier in the thread.there is no two side of the story.the two side of the story is between the criminals who committed ra.pe and the victim.

a ra.pe case does not give buddhists the right to commit genocide against the entire muslim population living in burma.besides, this ra.pe is just a pretext to do what they are doing.this muslim community in burma had embraced Islam since the 7th century.they have faced discrimination and oppression through the years.

“Myanmar plight is in the line with the Islamophobia plot,” supreme leader's former representative in Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hojjatol Islam Val Moslemin Mojtaba Zonnour underlined.

The political activist slammed the silence of international organizations, and said such reticent indicates the satisfaction of western countries of the massacre.

He underscored that the innocuous Muslims of Myanmar made no anti-governmental move and are killed just because they are Muslims.

“This event is the racial one and has nothing to do with politics,” supreme leader's representative in Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps underscored.

Hojjatol Islam Val Moslemin Mojtaba Zonnour underscored that any move against the U.S interest will lead the country’s officials to do their best to stand against it but when Muslims are massacred, the country takes no reaction.

Burma's monks call for Muslim community to be shunned

The Buddhists have reportedly tried to block humanitarian aid getting to ethnic group

Hanna Hindstrom Wednesday 25 July 2012

independent.co.uk

Monks who played a vital role in Burma's recent struggle for democracy have been accused of fuelling ethnic tensions in the country by calling on people to shun a Muslim community that has suffered decades of abuse.

In a move that has shocked many observers, some monks' organisations have issued pamphlets telling people not to associate with the Rohingya community, and have blocked humanitarian assistance from reaching them. One leaflet described the Rohingya as "cruel by nature" and claimed it had "plans to exterminate" other ethnic groups.

The outburst against the Rohingya, often described as one of the world's most oppressed groups, comes after weeks of ethnic violence in the Rakhine state in the west of Burma that has left more than 80 dead and up to 100,000 people living in a situation described as "desperate" by humanitarian organisations. As state-sanctioned abuses against the Muslim community continue, Burma's president Thein Sein – credited by the international community for ushering in a series of democratic reforms in the country and releasing political prisoners such as Aung San Suu Kyi – has urged neighbouring Bangladesh to take in the Rohingya.

"In recent days, monks have emerged in a leading role to enforce denial of humanitarian assistance to Muslims, in support of policy statements by politicians," said Chris Lewa, director of the Arakan project, a regional NGO. "A member of a humanitarian agency in Sittwe told me that some monks were posted near Muslim displacement camps, checking on and turning away people they suspected would visit for assistance."

The Young Monks' Association of Sittwe and Mrauk Oo Monks' Association have both released statements in recent days urging locals not to associate with the group. Displaced Rohingya have been housed in over-crowded camps away from the Rakhine population – where a health and malnutrition crisis is said to be escalating – as political leaders move to segregate and expel the 800,000-strong minority from Burma. Earlier this month, Thein Sein attempted to hand over the group to the UN refugee agency.

Aid workers report ongoing threats and interference by local nationalist and religious groups. Some monasteries in Maungdaw and Sittwe sheltering displaced Rakhine people have openly refused to accept international aid, alleging that it is "biased" in favour of the Rohingya. Monks have traditionally played a critical role in helping vulnerable citizens, stepping in to care for the victims of Cyclone Nargis in 2008 after the military junta rejected international assistance.

Many have been shocked by the response of the monks and members of the democracy movement to the recent violence, which erupted after the rape and murder of a Buddhist woman, allegedly by three Muslims, unleashed long-standing ethnic tensions.

Monks' leader Ashin Htawara recently encouraged the government to send the group "back to their native land" at an event in London hosted by the anti-Rohingya Burma Democratic Concern. Ko Ko Gyi, a democracy activist with the 88 Generation Students group and a former political prisoner, said: "The Rohingya are not a Burmese ethnic group. The root cause of the violence… comes from across the border." Mark Farmaner, director of Burma Campaign UK, said: "We were shocked to have [Ashin Htawara] propose to us that there should be what amounts to concentration camps for the Rohingya."

Ms Suu Kyi has also been criticised for failing to speak out. Amal de Chickera of the London-based Equal Rights Trust, said: "You have these moral figures, whose voices do matter. It's extremely disappointing and in the end it can be very damaging."

The Rohingya have lived in Burma for centuries, but in 1982, the then military ruler Ne Win stripped them of their citizenship. Thousands fled to Bangladesh where they live in pitiful camps. Foreign media are still denied access to the conflict region, where a state of emergency was declared last month, and ten aid workers were arrested without explanation.

Burmese Muslims’ unabated genocide

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - While the rest of the Islamic world engages in rituals of the Holy month of Ramazan, fasting, praying and giving alms, the Muslim community of Rohingya in Burma is being incessantly targeted and slaughtered mercilessly with nary a voice raised in condemnation. Thousands of Burmese Muslims have been massacred, while a large number have been forced to flee for their lives and dwell in squalid conditions. Who are the Rohingya and why are they being persecuted by the majority Buddhists?

The term “Rohingya” has been derived from the Arabic word “Raham” meaning sympathy and is used for the Muslims residing in the Arakan State of Burma (Myanmar); they began settling in the region following the arrival of Arab traders in the 8th century. Currently, over 800,000 Rohingya subsist in Burma and have been described by the UN as “one of the world’s most persecuted minorities”, yet it has never raised a finger in their defence. The root of the problem is that the repressible Burmese regime does not recognise the Rohingya Muslims as citizens or grant them the status of an indigenous ethnic group with full citizenship rights. The Burmese junta considers them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, while the Burmese law enforcement agencies are not ready to protect them from rioters.

The persecution of the Rohingya continues unabated since General Ne Win usurped power in 1962 in a coup d’état and stripped the Muslims of their Burmese citizenship and cracked down on them mercilessly. Thousands were forced to flee to the neighbouring territories of Bangladesh, Indonesia and Thailand, but it was a case of “out of the frying pan into the fire.” They were turned back callously or forced to suffer more persecution. In February 2009, five boats with Burmese Rohingya packed as sardines were taken out in the high seas and abandoned to die. Four of the boats sank in a storm, while one was washed ashore; the few survivors narrated horrifying accounts of torture by the Thai authorities before being abandoned at open sea. The Bangladeshis too have been rather cold-hearted in turning the Rohingya away.

One would have expected greater compassion from the Nobel Peace Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, but the champion for the oppressed masses, who has spent decades of incarceration, too has disowned the Rohingya Muslims, categorically stating that they “should not be considered (Burmese) citizens.”

The Rohingya Muslims have been subjugated and repressed for decades, but the cause of the immediate carnage is reported to be that last month, three Muslim boys were accused of raping and killing a Buddhist girl and were arrested. One of them purportedly committed suicide, while the remaining two were sentenced to death after a trial of four days.

The Rohingya version differs, claiming that a Muslim boy fell in love with a Burmese girl and the couple eloped, but were captured and tortured to death in custody while the other two innocent boys were persecuted. Resultantly, in retaliation to the Muslim youth’s alleged crime, the local Buddhist community attacked a bus brutally killing 10 Muslims. The military moved in after 30 Muslims had been hacked to death, but apparently it only aided the marauders, since within two days, the death toll for Rohingya Muslims rose to 680 and continues to this day.

The miserable plight of the 800,000 Rohingya Muslims merits immediate attention of the world and more importantly, the powerful and oil-rich Islamic states and the Organisation of Muslim Countries (OIC), who should take up the cudgels on their behalf. The so-called peace-loving Buddhists have demonstrated that they can be more violent and gruesome than the worst murderers of history. Surely, Buddha must be writhing with pain and agony in his grave, as his disciples are ignoring his lessons of harmony and peaceful coexistence, having turned to brutish beasts in Burma.

Devoid of even an identity and citizenship, the Rohingya Muslims patiently await the Grim Reaper to come and make short work of them, ending their misery because the world remains oblivious to their suffering. Gruesome images of the tortured and badly mauled carcasses of the Rohingya are pasted on websites and personal blogs, but they have failed to create a furore either in the Muslim Ummah or the champions of human rights. Must the Rohingya continue to perish in one of the worst cases of ethnic cleansing, putting to shame the concentration camps run by the Nazis to exterminate Jews or the killing sprees of the Mongol hordes, while the world watches cold-heartedly?

Rohingya Muslims representative in Bangladesh, Noor Hussain has called for international assistance for Rohingya Muslims who stay in camps alongside Bangladesh border with Myanmar.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Rohingya Muslims representative in Bangladesh, Noor Hussain has called for international assistance for Rohingya Muslims who stay in camps alongside Bangladesh border with Myanmar after fleeing incidents of violence in the Arakan region of Myanmar.

Speaking to AA correspondent on Wednesday, Hussain said that the regime in Myanmar set the people against each other, adding that people in the country have been living in peace for centuries.

Noting the regime in the country killed more than 30,000 Muslims, Hussain called on international community to take immediate action over the issue.

"Muslims in Myanmar are in need of food and water. We would like international community and Muslim brothers to assist us. Please save the Muslim brothers from tyrants in Arakan," said Hussain.

Hussain stated that security forces were killing the Muslims and raping the women.

Defining the developments in the country as intolerable, Hussein also stated that Myanmar soldiers took away children to unknown places, put the murdered people in mass graves and covered them with concrete.

"Our people lost their dignity, international community should draw attention to this region and condemn Myanmar authorities. We have not received sufficient aid, we are in need of financial, spiritual and psychological support," said Hussain.

i do not blame bangladesh that much.

she knows that it is the wish of the burmese government to see these people move to another country because burma does not want them in Burma.if they cross the border, they are not returning back.

the international community is mute toward the crimes in burma.it should pressure burma to stop the abuses.moving away and not returning is as good as eliminating them from burma.however,on humanitarian ground, they could be allowed to enter bangladesh for those who want to flee to save their lives.

They are muslims, it doesn't matter... help them first....

How would she feel if she comes to the gates of Jannah and she is told it is filled...

The international community only cares about what satisfies their interests... That's all.. They do not care about innocent people dying...

International politics is all about interests not welfare....

it is a very sad story.

too bad the area where the Muslims live in burma does not have oil and have no strategic importance in international politics.if it had,the US by now would have taken the case to the UN security council and called for them to secede like we saw in southern sudan.
