Reference: We are so over ripe we're going rotten. What's he afraid of. We can have a Federal Police force like the FBI, a state police force and the Sheriffs office for cities or local councils. You can have unified laws but you cannot have unified law enforcement in such a multicultural society as Nigeria. It simply doesn't work.

If you want state Police, you do not need to go far. Just give OPC uniform to wear, give Bakassi boys uniform to wear and give Boko Harram uniform to wear then you have the state police that you want and it will enable you to fight other tribes and protect your people very well.
I am sure that is all you people want. Rubbish
You people should think before you talk

NovusHomo: I have just now realized that this Inspector-General "is not ripe enough" for the Nigerian Police. Does he know anything about policing in the US? Practically every major city has its own police department. And, as to a State /City being overwhelmed, the Americans have the National Guard (a quasi military force exclusively for the preservation of internal order) With all the estacode payment, you would think this IG will know, or at least find out. On the other hand, I like his activist take on the widening gap between the rich and the poor. Is that his call as an appointee of the government? That is another matter.
never in ur life compare USA to 9ja in any aspect. corruption is the fundation of 9ja Demo-crazy but not in the USA.
Forget abt state police for now.

most state governors are likely to use state police to rig election and also there is likely to be conflict/clashes between state and federal police

sonyjacobs: most state governors are likely to use state police to rig election and also there is likely to be conflict/clashes between state and federal police

And that explains why we don't have rigging in our elections today. Or why the different forces -police, army or navy- have never ever clashed in Nigeria.

State Police is one the few radical changes that Nigeria sorely needs.
BH, for example, would have been tackled if each state had it's own police. Borno people, for example, won't stand and watch their own sons and daughters in the police force being slaughtered daily. Right now, people see the Police as an extension of the FG which is why a lot of northerns would rather happily blame the violence against the police on the FG they despise, instead of seeing the numerous offices killed as their brothers.

A smaller well equipped FG Police (like the US FBI) would provide the necessary balance to check excesses of state police units.

We are so over ripe for state police. The IG is wrong. But, of course, he'd rather be Nigeria's IGP than be a State Police Commisioner so his view is, understandably, borne out of selfishness.

Pataki: State Police is totally a bad idea. Not at this point in time. We have a long way to go towards achieving State Police. And most unfortunately, we are not yet on the path towards getting it right in this nation.

Give me a break the worst State and Local Police system is far better, efficient and will in most cases proactive rather than the Glorify Federal Police now. I have never seen where Criminals over run police and police Stations. Can we for once think? if the issue is about Abuse, Who says a State Police must be under the sole control of the Governors: State Shefif/Police Chief in the States are independent...so if we know the flaws; design the system or police force against it. Again, are we better off with NPF or even GEJ

Who'll take care of the funding and welfare of the policemen? The federal or state government?
We are not ripe for state policing, if you can appreciate and understand how disorganized the country is at the moment, you'll also understand why we don't need state controlled security for a myriad od reasons.

since must of you have refuse to understand that we dont need a state police now then we shuld be ready to see OPC, Bakasi, arewa and even BH in uniform all in the name of policing ther state. And non of you shuld come shouting victimazation later.

I don't think State Police formations can be worse than the current FG Police. What will happen with state police will be similar to what's going on with state govts- some would be great and provide intelligent and good service for their states (maybe Lagos, Rivers, etc), while others will reflect the mediocrity of their state govt.

Still better than the general crap we are seeing today.

Wat d igp said are facts, d truth is, we were not even riped fo independence in 1960. Also gap btw d rich and door is widenin, when no food fo d poor, there wl be no peace and security fo d rich. How i wish boko haram wil understand dis, and stop kiilin d poor. But anoda point is dat, state police wil create jobs, and guarantee effectiv security, if proper legistilation is put in place. Although it wil be quet cumbasome and xpensive to operate hence all d states depend on federal government allocation.

The IG, like all pro one-Nigeria folks, is afraid that state policing may lead to secession. Fact is, it'll improve law enforcement and security in most areas. Nigeria can't run away from the inevitable.

Instead of secession, it'll reduce the violence and may even strengthen the federation. The recent Plateau violence, for example, would likely not have happened if Plateau had a state police instead of the complicit FG forces.
