Kano govt stops pilgrimage sponsorship, buying sallah rams

THE Kano State governor, Dr Musa Kwankwaso, has said the era of government sponsoring people to Hajj, giving money to buy rams has gone, saying performing holy pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia is not an automatic ticket to paradise.

This was just as the Commissioner for Land and Housing, Alhaji Muhammed Nadu Yahyah, said critics of the current government were not happy because Kwankwaso’s administration had blocked all avenues being used to loot state treasury.

The governor noted that there were records that billions of naira had been spent on Umra and Hajj operations. He said the practice must be stopped.

Dr Kwankwaso disclosed this, on Wednesday, in Kano, shortly after laying the foundation stone for the construction of Bandirawo City.

He said: “So we are putting our money where it is needed. That is why our account has never been in the red. As long as we continue to follow and do what people deserve and what they need, we will be at peace.”

He said the Holy Quran did not say that people who were poor from my village, if they can not go to Saudi Arabia will go to Hell.

“The holy book simply said “if you have money, go. It is not compulsory that you must go on pilgrimage.

“If you have money, go on pilgrimage. If you don’t have money, stay. This is the more reason the state decided not to pay for even one seat. We have to run away from unnecessary spending of money meant to develop the state,” he said.

He said Kano was so congested that it had resulted in several environmental problems, accident and pollution.

The governor said phase one of the project had 160 hectares. He said the government had paid N282 million as compensations.

Good. Going by present events where a group of Islamic faithfuls are trying to pull the economy and security of the state down, this is a good policy. States like rivers state should follow suit.

This is a Country where salaries and pensions can hardly be paid, water system maintained and electricity provided, but we still Foolishly contribute Hundreds Millions of Dollars to the development of Saudi and Israel. Kwankaso should be commended and I hope the remaining 35 can follow suit.

I hope other states will emulate that.. Anybody that wants to travel to saudi or israel shud get his/her money ready and not rely on public fund.. Simple as ABC
