"Papa" from French 'dad', "mama" from English, imitation of baby talk.

Igbo also has mpa for dad, and mma for mother. Mpa mpa for grandfather, mma mma for grandmother.

Yeah, papa is from Latin via French, mama is almost universal, many languages have the syllable 'ma' in their word for mother.

I realize that almost all cultures use "papa" and "baba" to refer to their parents.

Yorubas use "Baba" though.
