AutosFull Review: How I Bought My BMW X5 Through AutoAuctionMall by aamadmin(op):
Buying used cars on its own can be a problem sometimes due to the fact that there are no guarantees of the condition of the car you want to purchase. Regardless, Nigerians (myself included) due to the cost of brand new cars, have had to settle for used cars. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a Nigerian problem, it happens pretty much everywhere across the world including the US.

So I wanted to buy my first car, complete novice, I had heard of online car auctions and also stories of people being duped of $4000 and more, like the agents would just vanish into thin air, simply because you’re in here Nigeria trying to buy a car that you can’t see in a place you’ve never been… Problem 1!

Of course, some friends advised me to just visit a local dealer here and buy. But when I read up things like odometer fraud, selling flooded or accident-ed cars, I decided to take what I thought was a risk then. Plus, I was budget conscious and to be honest looking for a bargain.

Understanding Auto Auctions
At the time, it seemed like complex stuff to me, with the terminologies etc. With just a few hours with Google, I got to know that US used cars are your best bet if you are looking to buy foreign used cars and with a little more research found out that Copart, IAAI, Manheim and Adesa were the top 4 used car auctions in the US.

There is also a used car market in Nigeria termed “Nigerian used” but you’ll agree that if you have options and the funds you’re better off with “Tokunbo cars”.

The only thing I didn’t like about online auction system was the condition of buying “as is, where is”… this literally means that when you buy a car from online auctions (bidding or buy now offers) you agreed to buy the car and whatever defects or faults it came with. Fine, they let you inspect the car if you’re over there or have someone to do it, but that wasn’t the case for me.

Also as a Nigerian, the thought of paying fully for a car you hadn’t seen or tested was a little upsetting, but I let the online reviews I read reassure me.

Choosing the Right Auction Platform
I signed up to Copart and IAAI because they seemed more popular, straightforward and had great reviews. the usual free accounts but found out that the cars I had access to as a free account were limited aka “Public auctions”.

I think I read somewhere online that the remnants of Dealer, exporter, dismantler and other higher accounts were the vehicles that made up these public auctions. To gain access to these top level auctions, I needed to make deposits of up to $1000, pay annual subscriptions of about $200 and also have a dealer’s license. Let’s even put the license aside, me that was trying to save, where was I going to get over 400k that I was not using just for deposit? Problem 2

So I went back to google and started discovering online auction brokers like Auto Auction Mall and Auction export who both seemed legit and had done a lot of business in Nigeria. What they do is that for a fee (usually less than $300) they allow you access some of the higher level auctions so you can get good deals and good cars to buy. They help with the bidding and shipping if you want.

Initially, I thought of Auction export but I decided to go with Auto Auction Mall because of a service they call “Phone support”. After calling them (Spoke with a Peter guy), they rerouted me to their representative in Nigeria here (Mr Femi), who was of immense help (Probably spent like 5k airtime on me and my questions...lol)

Choosing Auto Auction Mall was a no- brainer because they literally provided someone to hold my hand and guide me through a process I literally knew nothing about. From the inquiries, to the purchases to the shipping (big-ups!)… but I’ll get to that in a bit.

Selecting and Bidding For The Car
Signing up to Auto Auction Mall was easier and even before signing up, I could go through their huge online car inventory. To have what they termed “buying power”, ability to bid or purchase cars, I had to make a minimum refundable deposit of $400 or 10% of the value of the car I wanted to buy.

Although, I was told the deposit was refundable if I didn't get the car I wanted, at the time, my scam alarm bells were ringing and I gave up for about two weeks. But I did some digging and saw good and not so good reviews about them on other third party sites. But none that said they took off with money.

Initially wanted to buy a 2006 BMW 750li but thanks to customs estimate that I was able to get from Femi (The Auto Auction Mall rep) I dumped it. He literally said “Customs are waiting for you oo”. So I eventually settled for the X5, made my deposit with my GTB Mastercard (Debit) on their website, was granted a buying power of $4000 after I sent a copy of my ID and account email and we scheduled the auction.

The car had a “Buy Now” price of $2500. What this means is that the auctioneer was willing to sell the car for that amount without an auction. More like cash and carry. Let me mention here that apparently, all cars listed on Auto Auction Mall eventually end up in live auctions. Some auctioneers in some cases may sell if the set price is met even before the auction date for that car and some won’t fix a “buy Now” price as a risk to try to see how much they can get on the car.

For the auction, you can choose to be a part of it or not, I chose to experience it and was linked to the Auto Auction Mall head office in US. I had the free help of the Auto Auction Mall auction specialist, Peter, who called me via Skype a few days to prepare me for the auction.

Fast forward auction day, I eventually won the auction for $1800. Lots of tension there too but I think I handled it well...lol

Payment and Shipping
So Auto Auction Mall has some strict payment terms, payment of the buying power deposit can only be done via card on their website. Payment for the car and their charges only by bank (wire) transfer and for this you will need a domiciliary account.

Within 24hours of winning the auction, I got the invoice for payment with bank instructions. The breakdown of the payment included the cost of the car, the auction charges. The $400 deposit I made earlier had been deducted from the total leaving me with the balance to pay. I had to pay immediately to meet up with the 2-3business days payment deadline so as not to incur extra $50 daily fine.

Before the bidding process, I had also discussed with their rep on shipping. I got to understand that Auto Auction Mall assists with shipping through their partners if a buyer opts for that. He also gave me the option of sorting out shipping myself and picking up the car at the lot but then why go through the headache of separate arrangements right?

The shipping company they spoke with on my behalf was Prestige Shipping. After a few days, I got confirmation of a booking number and the vessel, Grande Benin (Grimaldi Shipping lines) that the car was assigned to. I called prestige directly a few times just to be sure this was legit and I wasn’t being scammed and their confirmations put me at ease. The car was booked for Roll on- Roll off (RORO) shipping since it was a “run and drive” car. I also got to understand that RORO is cheaper and clears faster if you’re buying just one car.

There were some slight issues with the US customs due to paper work that wasn’t properly signed, but this was resolved and after about 3 weeks, I got a confirmation after following up with Peter, that the car had been loaded.

The payment for shipping was paid to the Shipping companies bank account through bank/wire transfer and according to their Nigerian rep, Auto Auction Mall didn't take any commissions off the shipping. The great thing is that receiving a shipping payment invoice also acts as a confirmation of sorts that your car is on the ship and on its way to you and then the wait started.

Before I forget, after payment, the original titles, and documents including the bill of lading will be sent via DHL or FedEx for customs clearing. I got mine 4 days after payment.

Arrival and Clearing
After roughly 3 weeks, Grande Benin finally arrived Lagos. The Auto Auction Mall had earlier connected me with an agent who I met and gave a copy of the bill of lading to fast track clearance. After 4 – 5 days and N550,000 later, I picked up my 2005 BMW X5!

Things to Note:
- There were some additional charges like $25 for offshore transfer charges I had to pay when paying for both shipping and the car
- Try to get your dollars on time from your Aboki to avoid fluctuations in forex
- It is a lengthy process. Took about 8 weeks (due to the customs delay), was told it’s usually about 6 weeks. So patience is key! On the good side, you’re getting an awesome deal

Conclusion
I definitely will recommend Auto Auction Mall if you’re considering buying a US used car via auto auctions. Having a Nigerian rep to guide me through the process eased a lot of fears and worries and helped me to understand the process.

I’m already saving to get my wife, her own car too!

Autos5 Things You Must Check Before Going On A Road Trip by aamadmin(op): 12:44pm On Feb 11, 2019
Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and for some romantics, a road trip from Lagos to Abeokuta is the most ideal getaway for the weekend. Plus, there’ll be lots of traveling or most as there’ll be proposals and the elections to think of.
Apart from the already known approaching events, there are some individuals who have reasons to make long distance trips. In most cases, traveling long distances with a vehicle that hasn’t been serviced recently, is not advisable. However, if the vehicle is in good shape, then below are a couple of T’s you should cross before making the trip.

Vehicle Lights
Your vehicle lights re important especially if you’re driving at night. You can’t count on street lights to illuminate the roads you’ll be taking. It’s possible that the roads won’t even be lit. It would be wrong to count on them. It also doesn’t matter if you won’t be traveling at night. You never know if there’ll be a traffic that’ll keep you on the road till dark. You need all your vehicle lights to be functional, your pointers, brake lights and head lights need to be in full capacity.

Tyres.
There is no lifetime where you should ever consider traveling without checking your tyres. The Tyres are the direct connection with the road. Check the tread depth indicator to ascertain the condition of your tyres. Overinflated or underinflated are bad for your tyres, as it’ll cause the tyre to wear in the middle or on the sides respectively. Your car suspension gives your vehicle its stability allows maximum friction between the tyres and the road. So ensure that you invite your technician to check your suspension. Note that this information isn’t just for when you have road trips, bad tyres account for many accidents and these are the best ways to prevent them.

The Drive Belt.
Damaged drive belts can cause your engine to shut down and leave your stranded on the highway for hours. Once you notice that there’s a crack on your drive belt, please change it. Ideally, during servicing, it should be changed, but this shouldn’t stop you from checking too. The drive belt helps your car charge its battery. So if it is damaged, it could lead to overheating as the belt gives power to the water pump, which could have cooled the engine.

Brakes.
The brake is the component that helps the vehicle stop abruptly when the driver needs the vehicle to. You’ve heard people say their brakes failed; it means the vehicle didn’t stop when it was required. Brakes are a very important safety component and must be checked before driving. If you notice that the brake is not holding as firmly as it should, it is probably having issues that must be sorted. Failure to sort this out could cause a fatal accident.

Fluids.
As a maintenance requirement, you should check your vehicle for water and fuel every morning before you drive it out. Some of the fluids needed for the functionality of the vehicle includes, the engine oil, brake oil, and coolant. These oils are needed to grease the parts of the vehicle and aid its functioning. Ensure that you check and refill before you make start the trip.

Bonus Tip- Spare Tyre.
Traveling without a spare tyre is almost making up your mind to walk the rest of the trip if there are eventualities. You must have a spare tyre, a jack and a spanner in your vehicle. It doesn’t matter how good your tyres are, you need a spare. Also, ensure that the spare wheel you take is properly inflated and in good shape before you begin.

The most exciting thing about road trips aren’t the road trips. It’s the fact that the trips go on without a problem. Its safety first before anything else and for a vehicle to be safe, it must be in proper shape. For more maintenance information, please visit www.autoauctionmall.com

AutosRe: Understanding Shipping: RORO Vs Containerized...which Is Better? by aamadmin(op): 9:47am On Feb 11, 2019
MPESA:
Please kindly give more details on why is better to use container when buying more than one car , probably two cars and above , apart from Agent issues , IS IT CHEAPER TO SEND OR CLEAR TWO CARS FROM CONTAINER.
The main advantage is having your cars together securely in one sealed container plus in most cases it is cheaper since you will be sharing the cost of the ocean freight, customs clearance and port charges with other individuals. Except in cases where your consigment is filling up the entire 20 or 40ft container.

Also, one common thing agents or primary consignees(people who have about 2 cars in a container) do is that for people who own just one car in the container, they bill them outrageous amounts as clearing cost, deflecting some of their costs on the unlucky person and the owner of the single car has to pay. This is not nice but it is what it is.

Also, unlike RORO you can actually buy spare parts or other non contrabrand products and put in your car when shipping via container allowing you to do brisk business save and earn the clearing money back unlike if you were shipping in those parts alone.

SUmmarily, it is cheaper, safer, if you're shipping more than one car

AutosUnderstanding Shipping: RORO Vs Containerized...which Is Better? by aamadmin(op): 8:07pm On Feb 05, 2019
Auto Dealers would understand this and so this might not be worth your time. But for prospective individual car owners/users looking to purchase cars through US used Auto Auctions like www.autoauctionmall.com, do take the time to read.

RORO - An acronym for "Roll on, Roll off" is a shipping term used to describe the process of shipping cars, new or used without putting them in 20 or 40 foot container simply by driving them on the ship when loading at the port of origin and driving them off the ship when offloading at the destination port. This is more common with "run and drive" cars, that is cars that can start and move under their own power. SOmetimes, a car that is jump started can be RoRo-able too.
Why RORO? It is cheaper (at least $300 cheaper than containerized), it is easier and faster to clear(3 - 4 days depending on server and if your agent knows what he's doing) and if you're shipping through Grimaldi lines, the safest (those guys wont allow you near the car till it is fully cleared talkless open it!)
Limitations: You can't load other products into the vehicle, Your car might be exposed to the elements at sea (but in most cases the cars are usually parked below deck though)

Containerized - This is used to describe shipping cars in 20 or 40 foot container together with two or more other cars but at a maximum of 4 cars. It is the more expensive option.
Why Containerized? It is safer, you can consolidate ie buy other stuff and load in the car (for the business savvy), It is also safe depending on the shipping line. It is a better option if you are buying two or more cars at the same time.
Limitations: It takes longer to clear, If you own just one car, you are at the mercy of the primary consignee as any amount you are asked to pay to clear, you must pay if you want you car.

We usually advice that if you are purchasing one car alone from www.autoauctionmall.com, try to buy run and drive so it is RORO-able. And be sure to confirm that your vehicle will be shipped from a RORO port preferably through Grimaldi lines.
Many dubious agents of the primary consignee of a containerized car shipment sometimes give outrageous bills to a car owner with only one car in the container. SO be warned.

But before all of this, you need to buy the car first right? So why not head on to www.autoauctionmall.com and let us assist you purchase your dream car for a fraction of the retail price from dealer only and private auctions in North America?
You can also talk to our Nigerian rep as well. He will guide you and answer any questions you might have so you fully understand all aspects.

AutosKey Things To Do Once You Take Delivery Of A Newly Purchased Used Car by aamadmin(op): 6:08pm On Jan 29, 2019
Buying Used cars through car auction platforms like www.autoauctionmall.com can be a lengthy process and looking for guarantees on car conditions is not something any of the coparts, AutoAuctionMall, IAAIs, Manheims and Adesa's can provide. Used car auctions including AutoAuctionMall sell on a "as is" basis which literally means that you agree to buy the car with all conditions and liabilities.
The title of the car you buy will determine the extent of what needs to be done. However, for preacuationary measures, the following is recommended.

- Full servicing: Ensure you change all oils and fluids so that your car can be in as prisitine a condition as possible. Remember that together with shipping and time spent at the auction house, you may be looking at anytime between 2 - 4 months of parked time. Flush out those stale fluids

- Replace the Brakes: THough not necessary, but a change of brake pads would give some peace of mind as to the stopping ability of your car. COnsidering the stop and go movement of Nigerian traffic and you'll understand why you should replace your entire brake pad sets.

- Full Diagnostics: If your car is run with the aid of computers/brain box, it's a good idea to visit a qualified auto shop and run a full diagnostics so you at the very least know the actual condition of your car, what is okay and what needs to be changed.

- Tyre Change; This is not always required but be sure to check the year of the tire and the condition of the threading. Nigerian driving conditions are more demanding than US conditions considering the warm climate and bad roads. AT the very least d a check so you don;t end up donating money to VIO and Road safety officials.

- Check all Fluids: From transmission to brake oils to power steering fluids, do a full check and be sure to drain and replace any fluids that looks or smells funny. Using bad fluids can damage the mechanical components it was meant to protect in the first place leading to unforseen expenses.

- Set aside a Budget: This is a precaution many used car buyers fail to take into consideration. No matter how neat, clean and fancy the car looks, bottomline is that you're buying a used car! Set aside some money for simple repairs or replacements at the very least, a full engine service. This single action will likely determine, how well your car will serve you.

AutosWhy Are US Used Cars So Expensive From Local Dealers In Nigeria? by aamadmin(op): 3:20pm On Jan 28, 2019
To explain this, I'll use a Toyota Corolla 2005 as an example.

To start, on our website, www.autoauctionmall.com, depending on mileage, status (clear, salvage etc), and if you are taking up a "Buy Now" offer or leaving it to the live auction, the average cost of a 2005 Corolla is in the range of $1500 - 2500. At an exchange rate of N360 - $1, that is about N520k minimum. It may be lower depending on other factors.

So why is the price in Nigeria between N1.7m - N2m and how can I get it for less?
Here's a breakdown to help you understand why it is expensive

1. Shipping Cost:
The cost of Shipping, if by RORO can be at least $1400 depending on the cost of local shipping/trucking which is determined by the distance of the auction lot to the car port. A local dealer in Nigeria importing a 2005 Corolla would need to recoup this.

2. Customs Clearance
Again, the cost of clearing a Corolla 2015 can be as low as N380k and as high as N450k depending on the customs agent you are using and your negotiation skills. Again, the dealer will want to recoup this and then it's on you also. Mind you, DO NOT cut corners with your car shipments with respect to paying the full duties. It's not fun driving your own legit car like you stole it and hiding from customs. With due diligence, you can buy what is within your budget.

3. Dealer's Profit
A car dealership is not a charity business and they will need to make their gain. Because of demand, it's not common to see dealers turning over profits of up to N400k on the sale of a 2005 Corolla.

4. Demand
As with everything and the simple law of economics, the higher the demand, the higher the price. It's that simple. To confirm this, do your research. Most regular cars that are not in high demand are not usually abnormally cheap for their standard or what the car offers.

So how can you get it cheaper?
- By buying your vehicles directly from Us used car auctions, at the very least, you pocket the dealer's profit. Sometimes this can run into hundreds of thousands and even up to a million depending on the make, model and year.
- Yes it is a lengthy process but with our reps and auction specialist at Auto Auction Mall, you have nothing to worry about. We'll bid on your behalf at no cost.
- We can guide you in the buying process to help you avoid incurring heavy shipping costs due to distance for example.

The Total landing cost of a run and drive, 2005 Corolla can be as low as N1.4million depending on a variety of factors. Regardless of the cost though, you're sure to at the very least save the dealer's profits. It all depends on how patient you are.

AutosHow To Control The Cost Of Shipping When Buying Used Cars From The US by aamadmin(op):
I've come across a lot of customers complaining about high shipping costs when they want to purchase a US used cars through Auto Auction Mall. As we only assist with shipping there's little we can do about the costs. But with the feedback, there are a few precautions intending buyers can apply towards chipping off a hundred or more dollars on shipping. Here's how

1. Get estimates:
Before you purchase, we can liaise with our shipping partners to get you estimates of domestic shipping (trucking) from the auction car lot to the port of origin within the US as well as the ocean freight costs (RORO or containerized). I've had instances where customers, after knowing the cost, have changed their minds and either changed the location of search or downgrade to a less expensive car altogether. The key thing to focus on here is your overall budget. Given, you can't buy a used car from the US on a strict budget, but you can still keep well within the limits of your pockets. You can also focus on the cities that are closest to ports that you can ship cars out of in the US. This will reduce the local shipping/trucking costs and prevent you from spending over $500 plus on local shipping alone.

2. Go for Run and Drive Cars
Yes, salvaged cars may be cheaper and save you some money. Yes, if you're a dealer you will be able to maximise profits. But a salvaged car is not RORO-able and will have to be shipped in a 40 foot container to Tin Can. Now here's the deal, containeraized shipping costs more than RORO as high as $1500 compared to the RORO average of $1000. Plus the stress of clearing a container where you only own 1 of the 3 - 4 cars inside is something you'll be better off without. The stress and cost doubles if you are not the named consignee on the Bill of Lading. Rest assured, you will be at the mercy of the agent of the consignee who can quote any amount for you to pay and you can't do nothing about it. If one of the owners of the cars in your container is not ready financially to clear, be prepared for some demurrage. I only recommend containeraized if you are shipping 2 or more cars at the same time otherwise, forget it.

3. Buy Cars from Auction lots that are as close to the ports as possible.
What this does, is that it reduces the local shipping/trucking cost. If you were to buy a car from say the east coast of the US and your chosen port of origin was in the west coast, you could easily spend up to $1000 on domestic shipping/trucking alone. If it's not run and drive... well you can imagine the total shipping cost.

On a general note, averagely for shipping your car purchases through Auto Auction Mall, it can be as low as $1400 and as high as $2000 or more depending on a lot of factors including, distance, vehicle condition and port of origin. As always, shipping through our partners is entirely optional and we will be more than happy to share the auction lot address for you to go pick up your newly purchased car.

Lolz... OP didn't know most of the cars are above 150,000miles before getting to Nigeria.

Majority are above 200,000miles...
Nope. not true..depending on where you're looking at it from. Most used cars come in to Nigeria from between 80k - 130k. Nobody wants to buy a lemon right. Higher mileage cars are cheaper at online auctions which I can assume is why it is common in Nigeria so it is safe to having higher mileage cars in Nigeria, is a thing of choice.
