The C.I.A. director, John Ratcliffe, met with Delcy Rodríguez, the interim president of Venezuela, in Caracas on Thursday, reinforcing the Trump administration’s message that it sees the interim government as the best path to stability in the country in the short term. Mr. Ratcliffe is the most senior American official, and first cabinet member, to visit Venezuela since the U.S. military seized President Nicolás Maduro in a raid in the capital nearly two weeks ago. The meeting came a day after President Trump spoke to Ms. Rodríguez on the phone and on the same day he met with María Corina Machado, the leader of Venezuela’s opposition and a Nobel laureate. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/16/us/politics/cia-director-ratcliffe-venezuela.html |

Tens of thousands of dollars have been raised for an autoworker at a Ford plant in Michigan who was suspended without pay after heckling Donald Trump. TJ Sabula is said to have called the president a ‘pedophile protector’ as he toured the automotive giant’s River Rouge complex on Tuesday. Trump appeared to give Sabula the middle finger, according to a video published by celebrity news and gossip site TMZ, which claimed that Trump also yelled obscenities prior to making the gesture. In an interview with the Washington Post, Sabula said “as far as calling him out” he had “definitely no regrets whatsoever” https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/14/trump-suspended-michigan-autoworker

Jigawa LG Chairman Confirms Direct Federal Allocations A Local Government Chairman in Jigawa State has confirmed that councils are now receiving their federal allocations directly, marking a clear shift toward financial transparency and grassroots empowerment. The confirmation aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s firm warning at the last NEC meeting, where he made it clear that funds meant for local governments must reach them without interference. Indeed, the fear of President Tinubu’s warning has proven to be the beginning of wisdom, signalling the end of diversion, sharp practices, and backdoor control of local government funds. This development reinforces the Renewed Hope administration’s commitment to accountability, fiscal discipline, and strengthening governance at the grassroots level.

January 11, 2026 Statement from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell Good evening. On Friday, the Department of Justice served the Federal Reserve with grand jury subpoenas, threatening a criminal indictment related to my testimony before the Senate Banking Committee last June. That testimony concerned in part a multi-year project to renovate historic Federal Reserve office buildings. I have deep respect for the rule of law and for accountability in our democracy. No one—certainly not the chair of the Federal Reserve—is above the law. But this unprecedented action should be seen in the broader context of the administration's threats and ongoing pressure. This new threat is not about my testimony last June or about the renovation of the Federal Reserve buildings. It is not about Congress's oversight role; the Fed through testimony and other public disclosures made every effort to keep Congress informed about the renovation project. Those are pretexts. The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President. This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation. I have served at the Federal Reserve under four administrations, Republicans and Democrats alike. In every case, I have carried out my duties without political fear or favor, focused solely on our mandate of price stability and maximum employment. Public service sometimes requires standing firm in the face of threats. I will continue to do the job the Senate confirmed me to do, with integrity and a commitment to serving the American people. Thank you. |

Venezuelan militias are hunting for US Citizens, and any Americans should leave the country immediately, the US State Department has warned. The Government body said: "Venezuela: The security situation in Venezuela remains fluid. As international flights have resumed, US citizens in Venezuela should leave the country immediately. Before departure, US citizens should take precautions and be aware of their surroundings. There are reports of groups of armed militias, known as colectivos, setting up roadblocks and searching vehicles for evidence of US citizenship or support for the United States. Remain vigilant and exercise caution when travelling by road. Monitor airlines’ communications and websites for updated information. "Venezuela has the highest Travel Advisory level – Level 4: Do Not Travel – due to severe risks to Americans, including wrongful detention, torture in detention, terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, crime, civil unrest, and poor health infrastructure." https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/2156201/state-department-warns-leave-venezuela

As President Trump pushed U.S. oil companies to commit to invest $100 billion in Venezuela at a White House meeting on Friday, the CEO of ExxonMobil warned the company is far from enlisting, the Washington Post reports. CEO Darren Woods said that Venezuela is “uninvestable” after Trump asked him how long it would take the firm to restart operations there. He added that “significant changes have to be made to those commercial frameworks, the legal system, there has to be durable investment protections,” and there needs to be a rewrite of the laws governing oil production in Venezuela. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2026/01/09/trump-oil-executives-venezuela-exxon/ |

President Trump ripped the five Senate Republicans that voted to advance a war powers resolution, which would limit his actions after the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro last weekend. “Republicans should be ashamed of the Senators that just voted with Democrats in attempting to take away our Powers to fight and defend the United States of America,” he wrote on Truth Social Thursday, adding that GOP Sens. Josh Hawley (Mo.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Susan Collins (Maine), Rand Paul (Ky.) and Todd Young (Ind.) “should never be elected to office again.” A final vote on the measure is expected next week. The initial vote passed 52-47. House Republicans, meanwhile, in a rare act of defiance, will take up votes on measures openly challenging President Trump and conference leaders. The lower chamber will weigh a move to override Trump’s veto of two bipartisan, uncontroversial bills caught in political crosshairs. It will also vote to extend the expired Obamacare subsidies, an effort spearheaded by four GOP members who broke with their party to join Democrats last year. Votes are slated for the afternoon. In Minneapolis, meanwhile, a fatal shooting of a woman by an Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) officer has sparked condemnation from Democrats, while Trump and his allies have characterized it as an act of self-defense. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5677255-live-updates-trump-minnesota-aca-subsidies-vetoes/ |
Venezuela’s Supreme Court late on Saturday ordered Vice-President Delcy Rodríguez to become the country’s interim leader, after the United States seized President Nicolas Maduro and whisked him out of the country. The high court ruled that Rodríguez “assume and exercise, in an acting capacity, all the attributes, duties and powers inherent to the office of President to guarantee administrative continuity and the comprehensive defence of the nation.” The court ruling said that Rodríguez will assume “the office of President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in order to guarantee administrative continuity and the comprehensive defense of the Nation.” The ruling added that the court will debate the matter in order to “determine the applicable legal framework to guarantee the continuity of the State, the administration of government, and the defense of sovereignty in the face of the forced absence of the President of the Republic.” https://punchng.com/venezuelas-supreme-court-names-vp-delcy-rodriguez-interim-president/
