Isuama standard was in use outside of the present Nigaria among freed slaves. The reason why Isuama took prominence among freed slaves was because the Isu group of slaves outnumbered members from other groups who had been sold into captivity. Crowther attempted to use Isuama to spread Christianity in Aboh, but found out that he could not communicate with the natives and was laughed at. He abandoned Igbo and focused on Yoruba.
