HealthLack Of PHARMACOVIGILANCE Killed A Gospel Soldier( A Must Read) For All) by ability19(op): 9:36am On Feb 13, 2017
I write this article or piece with all humility to every single reader of this great article and to the world at large. The essence of this article is actually to inform us. About the need or importance of "PHARMACOVIGILANCE"
Before I go on I would love to explain what pharmacovigilance and what drugs are.
The term pharmacovigilance(PV) is defined as the science and activities relating to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug-related problem. But in a simple word it means "shine your eyes"
Drugs also called a medication or medicine, is a chemical substance used to treat, cure, prevent, or diagnose a disease or to promote well-being of an individual. Just as drugs can do all this so also it can kill when its taken without prescriptions and also if its fake or has expired.

"Pharmacovigilance" is a simply task every one should practice whether educated or not.I am writing this base on the environment or the continent or country I am from, were Over the counter drugs are sold. With out licence or prescriptions from a medical personnel. I go through the papers. Daily. And you see people die due to lack of the word. "Pharmacovigilance" the most recent one which made it so clear that even the so called celebrities or educated do nt actually pay attentions to the little but mighty thing that could claim ones live without performing them. Yes we sleep we do wake up its all the mercies of our creator. Not because we are. Too clean and without spot. But for his mercies upon us we also take drugs. Daily and Forget the importance of the word "pharmacovigilance" we swallow them without performing pharmacovigilance. Am nt making reference to this person just because he is popular or because he is a gospel artist,he did lost his life few days back all because of Just a fake drug. #antimalaria. He bought from a road side pharmacy shop to treat him self because he. Saw or noticed a sign or symptoms of Malaria. My candid advice the every one reading this great and short article is actually to have a knowledge About pharmacovigilance there are few things you are to check before you get a drug I would outline them and they are as follows
*Check for the BB which means best before
*Check for the expiry date in some drugs it comes as ED,EXP or BB
*Check for NAFDAC number (speaking base on nigeria and its regulatory body controlling drugs) urs can be another name for the sake of those reading this article in another country
*Check for the date of production. In some drugs u see. MFG.
* and finally there is actually a code u can text to know if its real or fake it can come with. Batch no too
I will also snap a pics containing an example of things u are to check before getting any drugs after prescription from a medical personnel. Its your fundamental human right to check this things before. You buy any drugs do nt be in a hurry getting a drug take ur time just as drugs are antidotes so also. It can kill when its fake and could lead to lots of complications if am to mention the complication in this article Wouldn't be enough. In conclusion just as you now know what pharmacovigilance is all about please make it a duty to talk to some one about it. Prevention is sure better than cure. Thanks peace

Mtnmed:
Hi I just want to reply certain issues I could bring out, I am a paramedic in the university of Benin teaching hospital.

First I'll live to clarify that the reason for the post was to sensitize Nigerians about the missing part of "Nigeria's health system ". Paramedics are the guys that makes sure the patients gets to the hospital alive by administering care as the patient is been driven to the hospital in an "ambulance"

Many persons have asked, what is to say that paramedics will not one day rise up and claim to be doctors or nurses...the truth is that there is assurance because we are all human and human wants are insatiable but every sane person should understand the importance of each member of a team and all well trained medical person should understand his scope of practice and besides a better health system would be able to curb such scenario in the future

Us in the health sector should understand that the best way to care for the patient of to work as a team and as a structure of every team that exists there is always a team leader. In the health sector It is an unarguable fact that the doctors (physicians) are the head of the team but once of an attribute of a good team leader is to recognise the importance of every member of the team and all understand that respect is a two way street. It is taught in every team dynamics class that the team leader should respect the team member and vice versa.

Requesting a separate sector in the health system was never the intention of this piece. The paramedics are members of the emergency medical service EMS where the fire service the special rescue team etc are also members

I'll close my keyboard pad with admonishing us, every member of the health sector including doctors, nurses, pharmacist, pathologist, lab scientist paramedics that the reason we went through the stress and rigors of our various educational journey was to save the lives and keeping that in mind, having a well established EMS will reduce the number of persons that die at home, on the streets, brought into the hospital dead to the hospital and that of persons that die on arrival at the hospital.
Very true @mtmed thanks

I saw this post on facebook on the 04-01-2017 at 00:07:57hr and it baffled me, believe me I was moved by the caption but besides the caption something else struck my mind, in a scene, such as in the photo there are so many persons; the victim, the victims relation, the perpetrator and bystanders. It is appealing that individuals in this century would rather find themselves in that scene to post photos and videos on social media platforms than give a helping hand, but it also occurred to me that there would be at least one person in that scene that has the mind to help but would be hadicaped because many question running through their mind;
What do I do?
Who do I call?
Which hospital do I go to?
What happens when I get to the hospital?
What happens if the person dose not make it to the hospital?
Another thing that knocks me off more than staying at a crash scene and taking photos is having these questions pop up at all.
Nigeria at 57 is possibly grown and matured enough to have a national emergency medical service, a functional one at that in every state including the FCT, a system that has a toll free number that citizens can call in case of any emergency whatsoever, an ambulance service with a response time of at most 10 mins with trained medical personnel (Paramedics) to initially stabilize the victims and transport them to the hospital, a good health insurance scheme and legislature that allows for provision of care to citizens in emergency without first requesting for financial compensation in the hospital (something similar to emergency medical treatment and active labor act. EMTALA).
I believe that putting these in place would not only release the mind of the single well meaning Nigerian at an accident scene but would also reduce the time for photos and videos to a maximum of 10 mins. This will inturn reduce mortality and morbidity in the country and improve workforce.

Yes they are the leader of the Medical team but they do not supervise or direct what to do. Medicare is team work with every player actively involved. No profession/professional directs nor supervise the work of another professional in another profession.

You do not direct me, the patients needs the service(s) as such sent to the laboratory not a form of direction when I'm not "boy-boy".

Pathologist provides consultative and the decision as regards diagnosis with the results generated by the MLS. So when you use the word direct/supervise it doesn't augur well.

I did write dis article base on findings and nt. What I think or guess. I wrote it with respect for every profession and nt. To. Decline any profession. I wil give u a clear. Example. Have u even wonder. Who on earth are those who claim to work as a paramedic in the cricks. @ d air lines. Make enquires very well ask questions. I can beat my chest they are nt paramedics and yet u see them working as one. Like wise other professions.I would give u anoda example that will make u rember. Its still in this country. Jst last year a. So called judge was nt even a judge has been parading him self as a judge only for them to discover. Just last year dat. He wasn't. I will go on and on and. We won't stop but the whole conclusion is no body wants any profession to go down d drain we all want our profession to go. Higher and higher the only way forward is team work. U play ur part I play mine. A paramedic can't do d work of a doctor d ethics are clearly stated. Likewise a nurse or a lab scientist.... Please before you coment ensure u read. The paramedics advocate talked about training patients. Does he honestly understand the reasons and parameters used for sorting triage? Or he just wants to impress the readers. He was almost touching aspects of core professional medicine which is to say that when the chips are down, the will impersonate doctors without having the requisite training and experience. I know a nurse anaesthetist who is doing all sorts of surgery and killing people daily.
Do nt misinterpret post with sentiments. Ensure u read before commenting. The aim of this tread is not to. Bring down any profession but rather. To. Enlighten Nigerians about the PARAMEDICS. And a core missing link in the nigerian health sector and people shouldn't employ those who are nt the ideal staffs. For what involves the life of some one. Noting more

Red_cross per say can't do everyting that's. A voluntary organisation in develop countries there are red cross. And yet there is Emergency management service. With. Well mounted paramedics at each location should in case emergency arises. Am nt against red cross they are doing grate but nigerian government must do something concerning this situation year in year out. FRSC takes record of death cases and. Actually do nt also tell them the need of emerency management agency just. Last year. ASUU UNIBEN chapter lost 3 of their lecturer all. Becos of no emergency medical service. Which is nt suppose to be so we can't nt actually avert. Accident from happening but rather reduce it occurrence and let say it happens we reduce mortality rate Stabilising and transporting. Them as appropriate. All hands must be on deck for the advocacy. Of emergency management agency in every state and. Not just a single state #lagos.

Another idiot who rushes into an argument without reading and processing.

Teamwork among health workers in Nigeria has failed. Instead of a symbiosis where everyone works together towards achieving a goal, we have disunity. If the paramedics see medical Drs as their challenge to widespread acceptance, instead of jumping into baseless conclusion and going against them, why not try to unite with them and get acceptance? Most medical doctors know about the importance of emergency medical technicians or paramedics and will welcome them if properly certified. By the way, your website sucks.
Man can u stop been so insultive is nt worth it. He spoke his mind you speaking for ur self alone nt the crowd every one is entitled to his own opinion sir. There is no cause for alarm. Talking about team work. We all must. Strive for the betterment of the medical profession nt castigating any body. Every one speaks base on what he encountered. And the present situation of this I didn't create this topic for quarrel sir is actually to enlighten people. And also to let them know the barriers. The profession tends to face! Thanks sir for ur understanding PEACE

HealthRe: Paramedics: The Missing Link In The Nigerian Health Sector by ability19(op):
MEDICATIONS ADMINISTERED BY PARAMEDICS.
Paramedics in most jurisdictions administer a variety of emergency medications. The specific medications they are permitted to administer vary widely, based on local standards of care and legal restrictions, and physician or medical director preferences. For an accurate description of permitted drugs or procedures in a given location, it is necessary to contact that jurisdiction directly. A representative list of medications may commonly include: Analgesic medications such as aspirin, ketorolac and paracetamol, used to relieve pain or decrease nausea and vomiting. Narcotics like morphine, pethidine, fentanyl, and dilaudid, used to treat severe pain, such as with burns and fractures. Adenosine, calcium channel blockers Diltiazem and Verapamil used to slow down excessively high heart rates. Parasympatholytic drug such as Atropine, used to speed up slow bradycardia heart rates. Sympathomimetics[6] such as dopamine, dobutamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine used for severe hypotension (low blood pressure), cardiogenic shock and septicemia. D50W (a solution of 50% dextrose in water), used to treat hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Sedatives like midazolam, lorazepam, and etomidate, used to reduce the irritability or agitation of patients. Paralytics such as succinylcholine, rocuronium, and vecuronium, used when an emergency procedure such as rapid sequence intubation (RSI) is required. Antipsychotics like haloperidol or ziprasidone, used to sedate combative patients. Respiratory medications such as salbutamol, Ipratropium bromide and methylprednisolone, used to treat conditions such as asthma and acute bronchitis. Cardiac medications such as nitroglycerin, aspirin, and morphine, fentanyl used to treat cardiac ailments such as angina and heart attacks. Antiarrhythmics such as amiodarone, lidocaine and magnesium sulfate used to treat cardiac arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. Antiemetics such as promethazine or ondansetron used for nausea and vomiting. Naloxone used to treat opioid drug overdose and flumazenil..

In the Nigerian health system, the fight for superiority, and the fear for the sudden emergence of the Medical Laboratory Scientist has evolved into unbridled calumny and the use of such words as mediocrity, paramedics as a weapon of PROFESSIONAL WARFARE by the NMA and her allies to attack other noble professions in the health sector in Nigeria. It is pertinent to note that a close look at the history of paramedics professionals, shows that every other health professional like doctors, nurses, pharmacists, radiographers can function perfectly well as medic lab scientist., EXCEPT A PARAMEDIC The evidence is clear as stated above based on the duration of training, certificate obtained, general skills as well as medications administered by paramedics. So in Nigeria, the term PARAMEDICS is misinterpreted and misapplied because of selfishness and arrogance. In Nigeria today, based on what happens in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, I cannot see any form of paramedics activity established by law through the act of legislation in our hospitals. It is very important to mention that NEMA is in the fore front of coordinating paramedics activities in the case of emergency responses. In which have been tested over time that the so called coordinator general of NEMA is nt even a PARAMEDIC.#the_NIGERIAN_FACTOR.

For clarity’s sake, based on history and on the realities on ground in Nigeria:
Paramedics are pre-hospital in function, they are community, district or state based. They perform some procedures that physicians are supposed to do if their workload allows. According to the Britannica, “these paramedic workers perform routine diagnostic procedures such as the taking of blood samples and therapeutic procedures such as administering injections, or suturing wounds; they also relieve physicians of making routine health assessments and taking medical histories”.

Finally, I call on all comrades across the nation to stand their ground, on the paramedic profession, to improve and modernize medical practice and not to be subdued by it while we also inform and educate the people. I won't end this article without mentioning the BODY who has strive so well to keep the paramedic dream ALIVE in Nigeria
(The fountain of living waters). An NGO who has actually. Trained paramedics both home and abroad.

But rather happy about the death or accident people incurs and listing the figures... Please we need paramedics. As we speak in Nigeria. Lagos state is the only place with paramedics nationwide and the so called NEMA coordinator is nt even a paramedic time will tell.
