Making additional income is a must in a city where house rent and school fees is no joke. Raising a small sized family in this city can be very challenging (financially). Note a good part time income can range from 30,000 naira to over 100,000 naira per month. But you must put in the work.

So here goes a brief blog post which highlights 5 part time businesses and side hustles for people residing in Abuja. There are many more of course.

1. Barbing Salon: A civil servant in Lugbe runs a barbing salon that earns him at least 4,000 naira daily profit and he maintains his full time job.
2. Grocery Shop: A born again MFM sister working with an MFB runs a neighbourhood grocery shop in Gwarinpa, she makes at least 80,000 profit per month
3. Taxi service: A corporate driver with ministry of finance drives his private car during the weekends to make extra money to support his income. He makes at least 7,000 naira on Saturdays. He also picks people to and from his base in Suleja on weekdays which nets him 1,500 daily
4. Okrika Shop in Kubwa A former banker now working for an NGO sells second female shoes and handbags part time from her shop in Kubwa
5. POS Shop. An accountant with an MFB living near Zuba runs a POS shop part time. The lady makes 4,000 naira profit on a bad day.

Hello my Abuja Peeps. Life in Abuja can be very expensive if you are paying rent and have kids in private schools. Rent and school fees alone can bankrupt you if you are not financially prudent i.e if you don't have a meaningful income.

A lot of people complain that no matter how prudent you are, a meagre income will not sustain you. That may be true to an extent but for majority of people you can survive on a low income if you follow these 5 tips (what others have done). Here goes;

1. Get a side hustle

To survive in Abuja on a low income, you may need to augment this with a side hustle. Stay tuned to my moniker to find out about 5 Abuja side hustles that make a lot of financial sense. 30,000 naira per month is slave wage but a side hustle that brings in extra 40,000 naira may be a life saver.

2. Reside on the outskirts

This tip is very practical advise. More than 90% of Abuja commuters are people living on the outskirts of the city - what is known as outside town. The main reason this make sense is because rent costs on the outskirts is affordable and unlike Lagos, transportation in Abuja is much cheaper.

3. Cook and eat all your meals

The lock down period of this Covid-19 was an eye opener for many people. It is possible to survive on 25,000 naira per month if you minimize your going out and cook all the meals you eat. Mama put food may look affordable, but it is penny wise pound foolish unless it is not feasible to cook your own meals because of too many commitments.

4. Save every penny

I learned a lesson in 2014 that made me realize the importance of saving. I was flat broke and miserable during Christmas that year I was at the mercy of loved ones for financial assistance even though I had made some money earlier that year. Between January 2017 and June 2019 i made a concerted effort to save like no tomorrow and voila - I was able to buy a small parcel of land and build the house I now live in.

5. Live close to your workplace

If you have two job options, one that pays 50k but within trekking distance from where you live and 70k but at a distance that will require daily commuting. I would personally take the first option because on the long run, I would be able to save and invest my savings faster.

2. Training and Certifications

There are many professional trainings you should know about but most of them are not worth the stress. I did not say all of them are not worth the stress, but majority of them will only gulp money and would not give you any serious advantage of landing a job. I don't want to go into details but you have to choose wisely among professional courses and certifications so as not to waste your time. I will give you 3 reasons why I say so.

First reason is some of these so called trainings and certifications can be learned online for free. I am not saying you can learn everything on your own, you definitely need an experienced professional to train you atimes but many valuable training you pay hundreds of thousands of naira for can be learned at little or no cost to you.

Second reason is that some so called training and certifications are glorified paper qualifications. You may have legitimacy and recognition from their professional bodies but fact still remains that practical experience and expertise will always trump paper qualifications which is what many trainings do. Unless you gain capacity which is applicable to your occupation, just going for lectures and writing exams does not prove your competency or capacity.

Third reason is proven work experience trumps certifications except for specialist professional fields. An HND holder who has worked for 10 years with an auditing firm for instance would have bagged enough experience to trump a B.sc first class graduate with ICAN certification.

That brings us to the catch 22 question - if work experience is important for gaining employment, how will an inexperienced job seeker ever get employed without work experience when you need to be employed in the first place to be considered for employment?

The answer is to intern - pay your dues, work for free. Use your time and effort to acquire skills, connections and network.

Finding a Job - Jobs are scarce and the few ones are almost always taken before you'll ever get to know about them

If you are among the lucky few that will land a federal government job on merit or any other job for that matter straight out of NYSC, you won't find the rest of this advise useful.

Secondly, if you are like most NYSC serving members the job search will be a frustrating experience.

Thirdly, if you are like a smaller segment of serving NYSC members, you would seek out other opportunities to make a living e.g acquire employable skills or start a small business.

My take on this is to start a business or acquire vital skills now that you have the chance. You won't regret it if you do.
