Building Mehtic Technology (Part 1): Before There Was a Startup, There Was Curiosity When people hear about a startup, they usually ask: "How did you get the idea?" For me, that's the wrong question. The real story started years before Mehtic Technology existed. Long before I became a CTO or co-founded a fintech company, I was simply curious. As a teenager, I was fascinated by how technology worked. I wasn't satisfied with just using devices—I wanted to understand them. I spent countless hours fixing phones, flashing firmware, experimenting with custom ROMs, and trying to figure out what was happening behind the scenes. I didn't realize it then, but that curiosity was teaching me something much bigger than how to repair devices. It was teaching me how to think. Years later, while studying at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, I planned to learn Java because it seemed to power many of the technologies I admired. Then one conversation changed everything. A coursemate introduced me to PHP. I gave it a try. What started as curiosity quickly became an obsession. I began building small projects, experimenting with backend logic, and writing software to understand how systems worked. I wasn't trying to build a company. I was trying to become a better engineer. Looking back, one of the best decisions I made wasn't choosing PHP. It was choosing to learn in public. As I built projects, I shared what I was learning on Nairaland. I wasn't trying to become an influencer. I wasn't trying to market myself. I was simply documenting my journey. I had no idea those posts would eventually connect me with clients, introduce me to future business partners, and open doors that would completely change the direction of my career. That's a lesson I still believe today. You don't always know which piece of work will change your life. So keep building. Keep learning. And most importantly, keep sharing what you're learning. Sometimes, the opportunity you're waiting for is already reading your next post. In the next part, I'll share how a simple side project on banking systems led to my first major opportunity in fintech—and how that eventually led to the birth of Mehtic Technology. Abubakar Lawal Co-Founder/CTO Mehtic Technology LTD

Nigeria has always led the way in digital innovation across Africa, especially in the fintech space. But issues like lack of transparency, trust deficits, and cross-border payment inefficiencies are still major hurdles. That’s where Web3 comes in. Web3 isn’t just hype—it introduces a new layer of trust, decentralization, and transparency into financial systems. Imagine savings cooperatives, lending platforms, or remittance services that are secure by design and transparent by default—no middlemen, just peer-to-peer empowerment. Over the last few years, I’ve worked directly with: Smart contract integration Wallet authentication dApp development Traditional fintech systems bridged with Web3 infrastructure The goal isn’t to throw away what’s already working, but to enhance it with more secure, durable, and scalable solutions—especially for the unbanked and underbanked. As Web3 continues to evolve, I’m excited to contribute to tools and products that push Nigeria closer to a more inclusive and open financial future. Let’s discuss—Can Web3 realistically solve Nigeria’s fintech challenges? |
