NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS. NANS SOUTHWEST (Zone D). PRESS RELEASE NOVEMBER 19TH, 2022. FG VS ASUU: NIGERIA’S FUTURE IN THE BALANCE The long term effect of the ongoing mismanagement, victimisation and usage of public office to pursue personal vendetta and aggrandisement being engaged in by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige will in the long run further decimate, degenerate and disfigure the already severely tattered and battered status of Nigeria's educational system. Under the very nose of President Muhammad Buhari, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige have engaged in countless activities that are capable of destroying the future of this country if left unchecked. Since the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) began their last agitation, some of President Buhari's appointees have frustrated several efforts by stakeholders to resolve the issue quickly thereby elongating the strike to over eight months. In particular, Dr. Chris Ngige who turned a national issue to a battle of ego and walked out from meetings, disrespected officials, spearheaded registration of rival unions, took ASUU to court, instructed payment of half salary and further complicated the matter. Recently, President Buhari approved the sack of Mohammed Fadah as the Director-General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on ground of incompetence while Dr. Ngige remains in office without retribution in spite of myriad of allegations levelled against him. The partiality being displayed by the presidency is giving credence to the public belief that Ngige is working for the cabal. For the upteenth time, we want to summarily disagree with the misguided, ill-advised and erroneous decision to engage pro rata payment system for the remuneration of ASUU members. The half salary payment is nothing but an outright attempt to casualize, denigrate and abase the highly distinguished and prestigious intellectual professionals. The premise of argument that they can only be paid for the job they did reeks of ignorance. It is imperative to note that upon resumption, the syllabus would still be covered by the lecturers and assignments, tests, projects, examinations, and other academic activities that an initio should have hold in the course of the academic session would still hold. Therefore, since the lecturers would still complete the 2020/21 session, there is no justification for the half salary payment. The peculiarity of the academic sector demands that academic staff members work within an academic session calendar and not just months, therefore this peculiarity and commonsense should prevail over ego and selfdom. Finally, we demand that President Muhammad Buhari suspend Ngige from directly interfacing with ASUU as he has displayed inability to curtail his emotions and personal interest from interfering with his official assignment. He has shown himself to be unable to achieve objectivity and therefore must be replaced by a credible alternative. It is non-negotiable that maximum attention be paid to the educational sector as its output quality will determine the quality of people who will take charge of the National affairs in the future. To be more explicit, if Ngige is allowed to destroy the Academic industry, then the future of Nigeria is indeed bleak and hanging in the balance. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS. NANS JCC/ OGUN AXIS. PRESS RELEASE October 3rd, 2022. MEN OF HARMONY POLICE STATION HAVE A CASE TO ANSWER OVER ATTEMPT TO MURDER A FUNAAB STUDENT In tandem with global best practices, the security of citizens' lives and properties should be the priority of law enforcement agencies and as such when an average Nigerian meets men of the Nigeria Police, they shouldn't be apprehensive and fearful. The above is in complete contrast to the day to day experience of Nigerian Students in dealing with Nigerian Police. Despite assurance of goodwill and professionalism from the upper echelon of the Police Force, we still continue to receive unabated reports of harassments, unprovoked shootings, extortions and in extreme cases, losses of life. The latest in this string of unfortunate occurrences is the unprovoked shooting of Bakare Samuel Oriyomi, a 200 Level Animal Production and Health student of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. Bakare Samuel who is one among millions of Nigerian students who has been unable to access education for about seven months now due to the ongoing ASUU strike was shot severally by men of Harmony Police Station, Alabata on Monday 26th, September 2022 around 10pm. Rather than resorting to fraud or thuggery, Samuel had engaged himself in Interior Decorations to earn a living and was coming from site when he was accosted by about six officers who parked their patrol van at Isolu Cele junction. In their usual powerdrunken and overbearing manner and hiding under the darkness of the night, both Samuel and the bike men were shot severally by men of Nigeria Police Force with no questions asked. This incident which is tantamount to a murder attempt was carried out by men who are supposed to keep murderers away from us. We have observed with utmost disaffection, the deliberate attempt by Harmony Police Station to completely cover this issue in secrecy and hold no one accountable. Moreso, there has not been any plan to offer reprieve to the victims who barely survived. Having given the Ogun State Command of Nigeria Police Force the benefit of doubt to no avail, we're are hereby constrained to begin the mobilisation procedure of the multitude of Nigerian Students in Ogun State for proper action. We shall not spare any resources and any means available to us under the ambit of the law as Ogun State Command of Nigeria Police Force shall have us to contend with unless the perpetrators are produced. This is fundamentally necessary before the Nigeria Policemen kill all of us. Solidarity Forever ✊ Comrade Kehinde, Damilola Simeon. Chairman, National Association of Nigerian Students. #ASUUStrike: NANS Protest Conferment of National Honour on Education Minister, Adamu Adamu ..... declares 'funeral plans' for tertiary education under Buhari It behoves on us to call the attention of the general public and the international community on the brazen insult meted on the mass of Nigerian students by the irresponsible and reckless administration of Maj. Gen. Buhari (rtd.) Without considering the fact that Nigerian Universities students have been at home for close to 8 months as a result of the failure of this administration to meet the demands of lecturers and to properly fund education, the inept Minister of (mis)Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu is to be conferred with the National Honour of Commander of the Order of Niger (CON). The recognition of patronage on the Minister has not just demystify the sacredness of National Honours, it has further shown to the mass of Nigerian students that this administration does not regard the youths as being critical stakeholders as far as national development is concerned. To say that a man under whose watch Universities students have been at home for close to 8 months because of the strike embarked upon by lecturers got recognised by the President to be conferred with a National Honour is a direct attack on the mass of students. [img][/img] We also watched with rude shock the shameless, immoral, and embarrassing manner in which Minister Ngige hit Professor Oshodeke, the ASUU President from behind during the ASUU/Ministry of Labour meeting with the House of Representatives leadership. How can a whole minister, who is supposed to be a watchword for youths, degenerate to such assaultive behaviour? We demand an immediate apology from Ngige to the Nigerian public as such act was unlawful and fascist, while calling on the President, Maj. Gen. Buhari (rtd.) to takeover the negotiation himself with immediate effect. Rather than concentrate on the task of governance, the President is distributing National Honours to different characters, mostly misfits. How can you be honouring people who have made the cost of living so high, as well drastically poor standards of living? NANS condemns and rejects the National Honours and honourees entirely. We want Nigeria students to be ready for a grand mass actions on the ASUU strike. We have been clear that this government is anti-public education and this is against the yearnings of millions of students and youths. We also saw a distractive circular issued by the Ministry of Education whereby Education students in both Colleges and Universities are called upon to apply for a bursary programme. It is not just ridiculous but shameful. If the government were to be sincere as they want the public to perceive, there is no reason to even be getting students to apply. The NUC and NCCE have the data of students and should get all students to have a bursary. As an association, we do not want selective bursary but full bursary for all Nigerian students. We maintain that we want free education at all levels, instead of stipends as bursary. Nigerian students in the South West region must warm up for a consistent round of agitation to force the government to do the needful. In coming days, we shall be occupying the streets across the South West region to conduct a final burial rites of public education in the country as this is what the Buhari's administration represents. YFCM writes to commend the ever- working Governor who as at today, has engaged youths the most in Nigeria in person of Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun the Executive Governor of Ogun State for his laudable youth empowerment through the Ministry of Agriculture in the state. The Ministry of Agriculture in Ogun State has done wonderfully well in the aspect of empowering and engaging youths through various developmental programs and projects. The impact of these mind-blowing programs cannot be overemphasized as those programs has been able to positively liberate the lives of youths and by extension, all indigene and residents of the state. It can be recollected that the Commissioner of Agriculture in the State, Dr. Samson Adeola Odedina made it known to the public at the inception of this administration, the intention of this government to always give youths reasonable considerations in all programs coming from the ministry. Ever since then, the youth constituency has benefitted immensely from programs ranging from the Anchor Borrowers loan programs for farmers, free land clearing for young people interested in Agriculture, free CAC registration for Small and medium Scale enterprises, among numerous other programs engaged in by the ministry.
