NSE Index To Breakout Bearish Channel On Dividend Stocks Rally, Inflow From Low Money Market Rates. Thursday’s trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange had a very volatile session to extend its positive outlook on increased buying interest among the large companies shares and other stocks to push the composite index higher on a low traded volume and positive sentiments despite the relatively improved transactions. This move was further boosted by impressive 2019 full year and first-quarter earnings reports that were released so far during the week. Nevertheless, just as we noted in our previous updates that the pullback will not last due to expectations of more corporate earnings and qualification dates of many blue-chip stocks in this month of May will attract inflow to the market as players position for the dividend, especially as the yields remain high as a result of recent losses suffered by these companies. Where Treasury Bills rates stayed low at 3.84% for 364 days despite the oversubscription witnessed in the last auction. This liquidity will find its way to these high yield stocks as their adjustment dates come closer. Total Nigeria Plc announced a dividend of N6.71 for its shareholders, while Law Union & Rock Insurance made available its Q1 result to the market. The market is already approaching another breakout from the recent bearish channel as revealed by the chart above, on a strong buying sentiment. It also shows a buy point for many stocks amid two moving average crossings each in a recovery move of the market lead performance indicator, after three days of pullbacks on profit-taking and price correction. To stay ahead of this changing market dynamics and economic reset, get our home study packs, videos, and stock trading materials to take advantage of this recovery and realigned your portfolio with recession-proof stocks to protect your capital. Meanwhile, Thursday’s trading started on a green note which was sustained throughout the session on position-taking that pushed the NSE benchmark index to an intraday high of 23,892.92bps, from a low of 23, 709.20ps, before closing the day higher at 23,892.92ps. Market technicals were positive and mixed with volume transacted higher than the previous session, in the midst of positive breadth and strong buying pressure as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing a 'buy' volume of 100% and sell position of 0%. The total daily transaction volume index stood at 0.60. The momentum behind the day’s performance stayed strong, with Money Flow Index reading 79.77points, up from the previous 74.86s, indicating funds are returning to some stocks and the market. Index and Market Caps At the end of Thursday’s trading, the NSE All-Share index gained 183.48ps, closing at 23,892.92ps, from the opening level of 23,709.44ps, representing a 0.77% up, while market capitalization rose by N84.95 billion to close at N12.44 trillion, from the opening value of N12.36 trillion representing a 0.70% appreciation in investors’ portfolios. If you are yet to sign up for Investdata buy and sell signal setup, don’t delay. We have just added another risk management feature and six categories of stocks to see you through in this changing market dynamics and economic uncertainty. These stocks are with double potentials to rally and protect your funds considering their current market prices. To become a member, send ‘YES’ or ‘STOCKS’ to the phone numbers below. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right at this current market oscillation and earnings reporting season for portfolio realignment and positioning as we await an economic reform policy to stimulate and re-track the economy again. The day’s advancement was impacted by gains recorded by low, medium and high cap stocks, among which Nestle, Dangote Cement, Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, UBA, FBNH, FCMB, Eterna, NPF Microfinance, May/Baker and Fidson. This impacted positively on the NSE’s benchmark index, reducing its Year-To-Date loss to 10.99%, while market capitalization YTD decline stood at N517.18 billion, representing a 3.99% drop from the year’s opening level. Bullish Sector Indices All the sectorial indexes closed northward, except the NSE Insurance that closed lower by 1.92%, while NSE Consumer goods index led the advancers, after gaining 1.51%. It was followed by the NSE Banking and Industrial goods with 1.39% and 0.34% up respectively. While NSE Oil/Gas was flat for the session. Market breadth, remained positive as advancers outnumbered decliners in the ratio of 18:14, while market transactions in terms of volume and value were up by 18.08% and 56.02% respectively, as investors exchanged 182.74 million shares worth N2.33 billion from the previous day 159.24 million units valued at N1.68 billion. This volume was boosted by trades in Zenith Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, FBNH, Custodian Investment and Fidson Healthcare. The best-performing stocks for the day were Fidson Healthcare and NPF Microfinance gaining 9.62% and 9.46%, closing at N2.62, and N1.62 per share on earnings expectations and dividend payout of 20 kobos. On the flip side, Custodian Investment and Unity Bank lost 9.52% each, closing at N5.70 and N0.44 per share respectively, on profit booking and selloffs Market Outlook Being Friday, we expect mid trend on profit-taking and positioning as players react to impressive corporate earnings and dividend payout, as the dates for dividend qualification of blue-chip companies draw nearer ahead of more corporate earnings and the 2020Q1 GDP, even as MFI reveals improved smart money activity in the midst price correction and rising cases of the virus spread and oscillating oil prices after the crash. However, the market’s high dividend yield continues to attract buying interests, while more audited corporate earnings will hit the market, going forward, despite the likely continuation of selloffs. Investors are buying to increase their positions in undervalued stocks ahead of dividend declaration and Q1 numbers. This is also against the backdrop of the fact that the capital wave in the financial markets may persist in the midst of relatively low-interest rates in the money market, high inflation, and unstable economic outlook for 2020. Also, investors and traders are positioning amidst the changing sentiments in the hope of improved liquidity and positive economic indices that may reverse the current trend. We see investors focusing on the upcoming full-year earnings season, targeting companies with strong potentials to grow their dividend on the strength of their earnings capacity. Again, the current undervalued state of the market offers opportunities to position for the short, medium and long-term, which is why investors should target fundamentally sound, and dividend-paying stocks for possible capital appreciation going forward. This was noted in the 10 golden stocks and trading ideas for 2020, as discussed extensively during the Investdata 2020 Traders & Investors Summit held in Lagos. Also, traders and investors need to change their strategies, because of the NSE’s pricing methodology, the CBN directives, and their impact on the economy in the nearest future. https://www./nse-index-breakout-bearish-channel-dividend-stocks-rally-omordion/?published=t

NGSE’s High Dividend Yield Attracts Buying Interests, Amidst Release Of More Audited Earnings The composite All-Share index of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) turned slightly green at midweek on an increased buying interest in oil marketing and bunking stocks, halting the three previous days’ back-to-back sessions of pullbacks. This was just as investors took profit, while reacted positively to the recently released 2019 full-year and quarterly earnings reports with impressive numbers and corporate actions that beat market expectation. Despite these selloffs, the seeming recovery in the stock market rally has come a long way from early April lows. This Wednesday’s flat performance, notwithstanding, the market is set to reverse up and continue to disconnect from the economic realities as the Coronavirus pandemic is driven economic reset comes with different challenges and opportunities that show who is a spectator and a player in equity investment. Spectators are the fearful, doubtful, and distrusted investors or traders without goals or plans, while players have objectives, plans, strategies, and the play-for-profit motive with exit strategies at any time. In all, investors should adopt more a cautious stance, even when these pullbacks have offered some stocks breather. More impressive corporate earnings have continued to hit the market with corporate actions. On Wednesday, Alico Insurance, NPF Microfinance, as well as May & Baker released their 2019 full-year audited results with one-for-five bonus, 20 kobos, and 25 kobos respectively, while Nestle, NEM Insurance, AXA Mansard, and Aiico released Q1 2020 unaudited accounts. The market also continues to react to the qualification and markdown dates of blue-chip companies with good dividend yields, in the midst of the sustained oil price oscillation amidst the easing of lockdown worldwide. Meanwhile, Wednesday’s trading opened slightly on the upside in the morning and oscillated throughout the day on the mixed sentiment of positioning and profit-taking that pushed the key performance index to an intraday high of 23,759.84bps, from a low of 23, 6695.90ps. Thereafter it closed the session marginally up at 23,709.44ps on positive breadth. Midweek’s market technicals were positive and weak with volume traded slightly higher than the previous session, in the midst of breadth favoring the bulls and mixed sentiment as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing a 'buy' volume of 21% and sell position of 79%. The total daily transaction volume index stood at 0.54. The impetus behind the day’s performance stayed strong, with Money Flow Index reading 74.86points, down from the previous 79.09s, indicating funds are gradually leaving the market despite closing flat. Index and Market Caps The leading performance indicator at the end of Midweek’s trading was slightly up by 13.34ps, closing at 23,709.44ps, from the opening level of 23,685.90ps, representing a 0.06% flat, while market capitalization inched up by N7.01bn to close at N12.36tr, from the opening value of N12.35tr representing a 0.06% value gain. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right at this current market oscillation and earnings reporting season for portfolio realignment and positioning as we await an economic reform policy to stimulate and re-track the economy again. The day’s upturn was impacted by gains recorded by low, medium, and high cap stocks, among which Total Nigeria, 11 Plc, Unilever, Stanbic IBTC, Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, UACN, NPF Microfinance, May/Baker and others. This impacted mildly on the NSE’s benchmark index, increasing its Year-To-Date loss to 11.67%, while market capitalization YTD decline stood at N602.13bn, representing a 4.64% drop from the year’s opening level. Bullish Sector Indices All the sectorial indexes closed higher, except the NSE Industrial Goods that closed flat, while NSE Oil/Gas index led the advancers, after gaining 2.66%. It was followed by the NSE Insurance, Banking and Consumer Goods with 1.92%, 0.63% and 0.39% up respectively. Market breadth, was positive as advancers outweighed decliners in the ratio of 20:8, while market activity in terms of volume and value were mixed as volume was slightly up by 2.24% as investors traded 159.24m shares from the previous day’s 155.75m units, while the value of transactions slides down by 8.33% from N1.68bn on Tuesday, to N1.54bn. Volume was driven by trades in FBNH, Access Bank, UBA, Regency Insurance, and Zenith Bank. Unilever and 11 Plc were the best-performing stocks, gaining 9.96% and 9.94%, closing at N12.70, and N176.90per share on market sentiment and earnings expectations. On the flip side, Jaiz Bank and Union Diagnostic lost 6.45%% each, closing at N0.58 and N0.29 per share respectively, on profit booking. Market Outlook We expect uptrend as profit-taking slows down on positive reaction to impressive corporate earnings and dividend payout, as the dates for dividend qualification of blue-chip companies draw nearer ahead of more corporate earnings and the 2020Q1 GDP, even as MFI reveals that smart money activity in the midst price correction and rising cases of the virus spread and oscillating oil prices after the crash. Post-COVID: Nigeria Can No Longer Afford To Politicise Shift From Oil Economy- Expert The Chief Executive Officer of Mascot Consult Limited, Marcel Okeke, on Friday said the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a blessing in disguise for the Nigerian economy, as the country can no longer afford to continue postponing its diversification from oil, given the turmoil in the global economy. Okeke, a former Chief Economist of Zenith Bank Plc, who spoke during the Financial Correspondent Association of Nigeria (FICAN) Webinar Series Lecture titled: Nigeria Without Oil,” on May 1, a critical economic lesson of the COVID-19 pandemic “is that dependence on oil as the major earner has come to an end. And so, other items or revenue sources must be urgently explored and exploited. “This points to an urgent restructuring of the economy of the country such that substantial revenue must come from either new or neglected sources,” he added. He said that time has come for Nigeria to resort to its previously neglected sources of revenue like agriculture, taxation, and non-oil mineral exploration that the country is richly endowed and blessed with. According to Okeke, who was also the founding Chairman of FICAN, called for greater emphasis on the Micro, Small and Medium-scale Enterprises to create and retain jobs. He applauded the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for its continued show of leadership in this area through its various stimulus packages for the MSMEs and the productive sectors of the economy Nigeria, he continued, must begin to develop an alternative economy and end the debate on whether crude oil is a ‘curse or blessing’ to Nigeria, which has been raging on since the 1980s. “The utilisation of our oil revenue has been our challenge for the economic development of the country. It can, therefore, be said that the Dutch disease and the paradox of resource curse have been with Nigeria for a long time. And now that we are where we are now, there is a need for a paradigm shift to having a country that does not depend on oil,” he said. Okeke argued that reliance on oil is no longer sustainable for the Nigerian economy as the current slump in the oil market has negated all the projections in the 2020 budget to the extent that economic development would be a mirage and anything contrary would be a magic “Since March 2020 there has been a glut of crude oil in the global market. Demand has been remarkably outstripped by supply. Indeed, it has been reported that several oil-laden cargoes and ships belonging to Nigeria and other oil-producing countries have been hovering in the sea for months without seeing anybody to buy them. This situation is likely to linger because economies that consume oil are in no situation to utilise oil due to the gravity of the impact of COVID-19 that has practically shutdown all productive and production activities. “Let me give you a little idea about Nigeria. Oil production in Nigeria is now seriously endangered. The production cost of a barrel of crude oil in Nigeria is around $22 per barrel and now the price of the product is around $10 to $15 per barrel, it means that it is selling, that is if it is selling at all, below the production cost. If this continues, oil production companies would fold up, contract their activities, and leave the sector in job losses and lack of new investments. You know the implications for this country. “So, for Nigeria that has solely depended on oil for its revenues, the reality is that oil revenues are no longer be forthcoming. Therefore the country has been sent back to the drawing board.” Okeke recommended the pursuit of aggressive import substitution industrialization strategy for the country, stressing that “so many of those things we have been importing all these years, we have to find a way to produce them locally so we can substitute those things. It would take some time, but that is the direction to go for a Nigeria without oil.” He called for a reorientation of the populace towards the consumption of locally made goods, in line with import substitution efforts calling for “more emphasis should be laid on human capital development with the new emphasis on the digital economy, meaning that our education system should be restructured so that we can produce people for the needed direction of the economy.” For him also, this is the time for more emphasis on infrastructure development, which “has been the challenge of the economy and it would be more so when we don’t have oil. Power infrastructure is needed or the entire economy to grow. “There should be a greater focus on security and good governance. Today, there is a very high level of insecurity and our governance can be improved in several ways. “There is an urgent need for fresh legislation to disentangle the three tiers of government from oil money sharing culture. In a situation where there is no oil, this culture of monthly sharing of oil proceeds has to disappear. “The sharing of oil money is a constitutional provision and so there has to be a serious amendment of the Nigerian constitution to reflect a new economy that no longer depends on oil. Greater emphasis has to move to internally generated revenue by sub-national governments. “When there is no monthly revenue to share, they would have to think outside the box on how the states can exist and to discharge its responsibilities. It is well known that many states owe their civil servants in the pasts and now you would imagine what would happen when federal allocation is no longer happening. So, this is a crucial time for new thinking.” For Okeke, “this is urgent because what is before us is a hopeless situation and we would not know what would happen to oil next. And so, this is the time for us to change what needs to be changed so that our economy can move forward.” https://investdata.com.ng/2020/05/post-covid-nigeria-can-longer-afford-to-politicise-shift-from-oil-economy-expert/

Mixed Trend Ahead On NGSE, Amidst Profit Booking, Funds Inflow As Investors Review Emerging Realities Market Update for the Week Ended April 30 and Outlook for May 4-8 The composite All-Share index of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) closed bullish last week, closing higher on a positive trend and strong demand for banking, insurance and diverse large-cap stocks, which reversed previous week’s loss in the midst of profit-taking, and the influx of quarterly earnings by listed companies. There was also the effect of window dressing for the end of the month which came with portfolio realignment by smart money. This situation has technically pushed the market into a short term overbought region, signaling an imminent pullback in the early trading sessions of this new month. The sharp divergence between the money flow index on the daily time frame and weekly should of a serious cause for concern among traders, especially as inflows to the market on Thursday read 94.04 points. This is an indication of the inflow of funds, while on a weekly time frame it is at 14.37 points, looking down to signal the exit of funds. We observe profit booking on financial service stocks in the final trading minutes on Thursday, despite the fact that the session closed positive on inflow into large-cap stocks, especially following their recent impressive earnings reports. The upward momentum on the NSE comes as traders reacted to earnings news from big-name companies like MTNN, Okomu Oil, Zenith Bank, and others like Vitafoam and UACN. The major sectorial indexes ended the period under review mixed, with three of the five firmly in positive territories, while two closed lower. Crude oil prices at the international market gained 23% during the week under review as the global lockdown is gradually being eased as manufacturing companies reopen in the midst of the production cut agreement being implemented. This is expected to continue if only incidences of new COVID-19 cases do not balloon. Already, the pandemic has brought the world’s economy to its feet, in the aftermath of lockdowns and border closures that have negatively impacted company earnings as will be seen in the coming quarters. It is not only the corporate score-cards that will feel the impact, as government earnings shrink and they resort to one form of debt or the other to meet maturing obligations. Movement Of NSEASI It was four trading sessions of bull-run, as the NSEASI opened the week’s trading on a positive flat note with a marginal gain of 0.07% on mixed sentiments, which was sustained on Tuesday with increased buying interests in banking and large-cap stocks that pushed the composite index up by 0.49%. This continued at the midweek and also on Thursday, rallying by 0.62% and 0.67% respectively, leaving the week’s total gain at 1.87%, recovering from the previous week’s 1.41% loss. Specifically, the composite index gained 421.63 basis points, after starting the week at 22,599.38ps, within which it touched an intra-week high of 23,045.44bps and low of 22,584.64bps on strong sentiments and buying pressure as players positioned, in the midst of corporate earnings inflow and economic uncertainties. The index closed higher at 23,021.01ps, compared to previous week’s close after to break out the 23,000 psychological level, just as market capitalization gained N221.05bn, closing at N11.997tr from the previous N11.78tr, representing a 1.87% rise. This was despite the 25 kobo adjustment in the share price of Union Bank of Nigeria for dividend recommended by its directors. During the week, 22 companies released their Q1 2020 unaudited results. They are Fidelity Bank, Zenith Bank, Seplat, Julius Berger, Okomu Oil, MTNN, Law Union, UBN, BOC GAS, PZ, FCMB, International Breweries, Guinness Nigeria, NASCON, Vitafoam, Custodian Investment, and others. The numbers came mixed, with only a few posting impressive results, while Okomu Oil Palm announced a final dividend of 200 kobo, with Julius Berger revising its payout to N2.00 from N2.75 proposed earlier, in addition to a bonus issue of one new share for every five held. The gainers’ table for the period was dominated by low and medium cap stocks, as buying interests and positive sentiments reflected in market breadth with advancers outpacing decliners in the ratio of 28:20. This was notwithstanding the fact that the impetus behind the week’s performance was seriously weak, as the Money Flow Index fell to 14.37bps from 16.31bps in the previous week. The weekly MACD is bearish but looking up with ‘buy’ sentiments as confirmed by Investdata’s Sentiment Report for the week, showing 95% ‘buy’ volume and sell position of 5%, with the transaction volume index at 0.65. Mixed Sectoral Indices Performance across the sectors was largely bullish during the week, except for the NSE Consumer and Industrial Goods indexes that closed 1.42% and 0.47% lower respectively, while NSE Banking index led the advancers after gaining 3.83%; followed by the NSE Oil/Gas index’s 1.70%, ahead of the NSE Insurance that rallied by 1.27%. Transaction in terms of volume and value were down by 15.83% and 29.26% respectively as investors traded 1.01bn shares worth N9.89bn from the previous week 1.2bn units valued at N13.98bn. The week’s volume was boosted by trades in financial services stocks, especially FBNH, UBA and Access Bank. The best-performing stocks in the week were ARDOVA (former Forte Oil) and Lasaco Assurance, which gained 20.94% and 12.50% respectively, closing at N11.55 and N0.27 per share on market forces. On the flip side, Nigerian Breweries and Transcorp lost 13.04% and 10.81% respectively, closing at N30 and N0.66 per share on profit-taking and market forces. Market Outlook In the new week, we expect a mixed trend on profit booking as technically revealed by the short-term overbought and double tops formation of the candlestick at the cup and handle chart pattern of the NSE action. Also, the possibility of continued funds inflow to the market in the new month is high due to the number of blue-chip companies have announced their qualification dates and AGMs, as market players digest the score-cards released in the previous month to reposition their portfolios. Investors also should look out for developments regarding the implementation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s funding plan for small and medium scale businesses. Already, we notice that investors are taking the position in healthcare and other defensive stocks that are likely to survive this meltdown, following which there is increased transactions in them, even as global markets continue on the recovery path already, as lockdowns are gradually being relaxed. Also, do not forget to identify and play defensive stocks among the many fundamentally sound companies that remained depressed, making them attractive for bargain hunting by market players. This has also resulted in significant improvements in Dividend Yields of stocks, even as we note the fact that fund managers who held cash before now, may have to rethink the strategy and go for value stocks with high upside potentials. While discerning investors should take advantage of the current low stocks valuation to position for the medium to long-term, it is noteworthy that the Nigerian equity market is selling at a discount and therefore offers high upside potential. On a bargain-hunting motive supporting positive performance, especially with many fundamentally sound stocks remaining underpriced. With a dividend yield of major blue-chips continuing to look attractive in recent weeks, we expect speculative trading to shape the market’s direction, despite the seeming mixed outlook. To position for the short to long-term, this is why investors should target fundamentally sound, dividend-paying stocks, for possible capital appreciation in the coming months. Also, traders and investors need to change their strategies, because of the NSE’s pricing methodology, the CBN directives, and their impact on the economy in the nearest future. Nigerian Senate Denies Approving ‘Fresh’ N850bn Loan Nigeria’s Senate, on Thursday, denied an alleged report suggesting that it approved a fresh N850bn loan request by President Muhammadu Buhari. A statement by Senator Ajibola Basiru, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, described as “erroneous” the media report, which he said is not a true representation of what transpired on the floor during Tuesday’s plenary. Instead, he continued, the Senators only amended a resolution reached earlier as to where the initial N850bn already approved by the National Assembly would be sourced. Recall that the Senate had initially approved sourcing of the loan from external borrowing. The upper chamber, he continued, rescinded its earlier decision to seek external borrowing by resolving to obtain the loan through the Domestic Capital Market. “It is very important to make a very important clarification particularly on the widely circulated erroneous report that the Senate approved a fresh loan of N850bn at the Plenary on Tuesday. “That is far from the truth. The resolution passed was an amendment of the earlier resolution as to the source of the initial N850bn loan that had been approved to be part of what should be used to fund the 2020 Appropriation Act. “You will recall that the Senate had actually approved the loan of N850bn but to be sourced from external sources. “However, because of the COVID-19 Pandemic and of the challenge in the international oil market with the attendant challenges of raising the approved loan externally, the President requested that the approved loan should rather be raised through the Domestic Capital Market. “It was the above request as to sourcing the earlier approved external borrowing of N850bn from Domestic Capital Market that was approved by the Senate”, Senator Basiru explained. https://investdata.com.ng/2020/04/nigerian-senate-denies-approving-fresh-n850bn-loan/

Zenith Bank 2020Q1: Strong Balance Sheet, Diversified Income Lines Zenith Bank Plc, last week presented its financials for the first quarter ended March 31, 2020, to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) slightly later than the date of the 2019 numbers, although it came within the regulatory time frame. The numbers confirmed the bank’s resilience, maintaining the growth trend of its quarterly earnings over the years, the result of its diversified income lines, and aggressive retail banking business, driven by technology as demonstrated by the recent launch of voice banking, technology to make banking easy while driving deposits. The bank reported an aggressive 44.13% growth in its loan book in the period, making it perhaps the highest rate in the review period. This move may not be unconnected with management’s desire to meet the regulatory minimum Loan-to-Deposit Ratio of 65%, even as it will test the bank’s risk management capabilities that will become evident in the coming months. At the moment, the Nigerian banking industry is exposed to the twin crisis of oil price crash, at a time of challenges in the economy which has exposed it, just like its peers, to a high risk of bad loans. It is noteworthy that Zenith Bank’s management has kept its ratio of non-performing loans to total loan size below the 5% threshold. We note the need for management to continue keeping the numbers in check at this time when NPL ratio climb up by 30 points to 4.6% at the end of the 2020Q1, considering the gloomy global and domestic economy that signaled a high possibility of many loans going bad. That notwithstanding, we note the growth in the bank’s customer deposit as well as loans and advances, which are signs that the management is proactive in its determination to create value for all stakeholders. Gross earnings for the period grew mildly by 5.5% to N166.81bn, from N168.11bn in the corresponding period of 2019, driven by non-interest revenue, especially trading income, as well as forex revaluation gains. Profit was almost flat at N50.53bn, compared to N50.23bn, translating to 161 kobo earnings per share from its previous 160 kobo, The drop in the bank’s market value for the period reflected on the earnings yield, which rose to 10.84% as of released date, from 7.66% in 2019. Although operating expenses rose by 10.1%, we observed the improvement in operating efficiency with a cost-to-income ratio relatively flat at 51.0%, as reflected in the profit margin ratio of 30.29% in the period, from 31.77%. This was despite the high provisions for bad loans, which increased by 88.5%, significantly impacting the bottom-line. Net asset improved by 18.58% to N925.94bn, from N780.89bn in 2019; just as the three-month trailing Price-to-Earnings ratio for the period stood at 2.31x, lower than the 3.27x recorded in 2019. Book Value for the quarter stood at N29.49 per share, while return on equity slipped to 5.46%, from 6.43% in 2019. Furthermore, liquidity and capital adequacy ratios remain above regulatory thresholds of 41.9% and 19.6% respectively. The bank’s corporate and retail banking segment has continued to support earnings capacity as reflected in investment and profit ratios, which actually reveal its high margin of safety at princely 98.59%, considering the market price as of when the result was released. The 28.79% growth in retained earnings to N374.03bn, from N290.41bn in 2019 boosted Net Assets and balance sheet for the period, just as the flat cost-to-income ratio at 51x and consistent growth in its net assets are encouraging. These are expected to support the share price going forward. Valuation The consistent growth in earnings on a quarterly basis (irrespective of the mild increases in current scorecard), has reduced the waiting period of investors with Price-to-Earnings Ratio dropping to 2.31x, from the 3.27x in 2019. On the strength of its robust balance sheet and earnings, we upgrade the target price of Zenith Bank to N30, based on the 2020Q1 earnings report. This guidance is indicative of stronger performance, despite the gloomy economic situation. Meanwhile, the cheap state of the bank’s share price and as a result, its attractiveness is further confirmed by the Book Value of N29.49 per share. Analysts Opinion/Recommendations Despite the dicey outlook of the Nigerian economy, and considering the low rates obtainable in Treasury Bills, the exposure to the country’s oil sector by most banks, and general downturn which is likely to slow down trading and fee incomes, going by the recent cut in bank charges, among others, the 2020 financial year is already a challenging one for most Nigerian banks may. Traders and investors with short, medium, and long-term goals, who desire to preserve capital, should look the way of this stock while keeping their gaze on market trends. We, therefore, recommend a BUY on Zenith Bank for any investment objective. Technical View Zenith Bank’s price action has been on a bearish channel over the past three years, breaking down different support levels to test a five-year strong support level of N10.70 per share, before rebounding and oscillated on mixed investor sentiments. The candlestick formation after the bank released its Q1 earnings report signals indecision among market players, whose next direction will be determined by market forces in the new week and month. The bank’s Relative Strength Index is reading 39.14, while Money Flow Index is looking down at 28.85, signaling profit-taking on a monthly time frame. Over the past seven months, the bank’s price action has side-ranged or trended, before breaking down on markdown for dividend proposed by the board, as well as the bearish sentiment induced by ravaging Coronavirus pandemic. Four-Year Performance (2016-2019) A critical look at the bank’s performance over the past four years shows a consistent improvement on the top and bottom lines, except in 2018 when it recorded a slowdown in investment and profitability ratios in the period under review. The high and low performance of the bank is revealed by the numbers in the tables below. Gross earnings for the period oscillated to reflect changes in the economy, moving from N508bn in 2016 full-year, to its N745.19bn peak, before falling in 2018 to N630.34bn and rebounding thereafter to N662.25bn in 2019. Profit level has consistently been on the uptrend over the past four years, growing by 61.1% to N208.84bn in 2019FY, from N129.65bn in 2016. Similarly, Earnings Per Share remained strong and steady at N6.65, regardless of the over-regulation in the industry and the country’s unfriendly economic situation, as shown in the high Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), tight liquidity, rising inflation rate, dwindling discretionary income, and falling naira value. The bank’s earnings capacity rose from 413 kobo per share in 2016 to 566 kobo in 2017, and 616 kobo and 665 kobo in 2018 and 2019 respectively, despite the various headwinds in the industry over these years. The stable movement in Zenith Bank’s Earnings Yield despite the decline from 28.03% in 2016 to 18.25% in 2017 is a plus. We noted that it has maintained an uptrend since then to 24.3% in 2018, before peaking at 34.20% in 2019. The bank’s robust dividend payout to shareholders continues to impact the economy positively, just as its Corporate Social Responsibility spending as seen in its being among the first organizations to contribute to the Lagos State Governments N2bn appeal fund in the aftermath of the blast that rocked Abule-Ado, a community in the Festac Town axis of Lagos. The bank also contributed generously to the Central Bank of Nigeria-led Private Sector Coalition Against COVID-19. However, given the regulatory regime in Nigeria, investdata believes the bank’s management may need to strengthen its African business. Investors, on the other hand, have followed the bank’s outstanding performance over time, taking strategic positions which continue to reveal value in the stock, while creating wealth as investors smile to the banks on a biannual basis. Similarly, over the years, its Book Value has grown in the same direction from N22.44 per share in 2016 to N26.15 in 2017, N25.98 in 2018, and finally N30.00. The consistent earnings growth and Investor confidence are expected to support its price, given that valuation tools place the bank’s stock at N30 per share.
